Not him but there are multiple ways to make foils. One is to make them vastly different to contrast with one another. Hot and cold personality of the MC and his rival for example. The other is to make them very similar but with a very noticeable difference in a few important parts. The similarity makes it easier to see the difference in the 2nd way.

Ruby and Jaune are the 2nd. They're similar in personality and set-up as the two young goofy leaders but the way they handle events are different as the story moves forward. Jaune becomes more negative while Ruby sees the positives as they experience the events and tragedies. I think people see they're foils more simply because the way the story places them together.

They started off walking to beacon together as the young kids they are. They were both made leaders. They both experience loss. End of 3rd volume is them going on a journey together out into the world mirroring how they took their first steps to beacon together. Last episode was more noticeable. It's like every time Ruby says something positive, Jaune says something negative.

It might have been planned out but was never really used.

It also pegs him as a really open character, but Ren and Nora didn't know he had seven sisters until volume 4 and Ruby was asking about his weapon and he gave a vague response.

The thing with the timing of calling them foils after one season is, that 1 volume is the one that came right after the big moments of v3 with the fall of beacon. Their personality and set-up is similar and that's what's been established in the previous 3 volumes. Their difference is how they're shaped by events. The fall of beacon is a big moment and the one that really splits them off to show the difference.

Even as volume 4 progresses, we can see the increasing difference between their reactions. The dying guardsman and their reactions. Ruby comforts Jaune afterwards while Jaune says he's tired of losing everything. Their reaction to Qrow's talk about all the secrecy. The way they handle a dying Qrow and separation. I'd even include how they handle the deaths of their friends Penny and Pyrrha but Ruby's lack of reaction there is bordering on bizarre writing. Although we can also say Ruby's lack of communicating and showing her feelings compared to Jaune is a difference in itself.

It would be fair to call it weak contrast because they've only been different for one season but the thing is, what really sticks out is timing and placing of their scenes. I don't think it's a coincidence that they were the ones who walked together to beacon for their 1st "journey" and the outside world for their 2nd. It was even complete with Jaune appearing out of nowhere going hey to Ruby. I don't think it's a coincidence that they were both young inexperienced leaders being chosen by the keikaku master. I don't think it's a coincidence they both had their team leadership teething problem one after the other with Ruby experiencing it first and then passing on the lesson to Jaune in their night talk. Or their reaction to current events or how one positive reaction by Ruby is followed by a negative from Jaune.

If it were a coincidence, M&K managed to make parallels between them accidentally while also managing to place and time it properly for people to see the contrast.

Not that guy but that post link had the right idea but with a wrong detail. It's not that he's open to other characters about everything. Well, he also is open (at least more than other characters). He's open to the viewers as a character. We see or get to know his thoughts because he expresses and says it. We're not left wondering what his reaction is to events because we can see it. Which I guess is why a lot of people complain that Jaune is the MC due to all the focus on him and his reaction to things.
