There actually were a handful of Kryptonian colonies, like the planet Daxam. They have similar powers to Kryptonians. Sodam Yat was a Daxamite.

Krypton had achieved the scientific and cultural apex of their civilization, and withdrew most of their colonies and ships to turn inward because the government thought that intermingling with other planets caused civil unrest and led to an impure civilization. They believed that they knew everything their was to know (or at least everything their civilization needed to know,) so anything that challenged that was seen as a challenge to Krypton's perfect society.

The Phantom Zone is suggested by Jor-El income continuities, and it results in his theories immidediately being thrown out. The thing about the Phantom Zone is that it is not a secret clubhouse or even a prison- it is literally Hell.

So not only was Jor-El threatening the infallibility of the Kryptonian government, but he was also telling everyone to send every man, woman, and child to actual Hell.

Look at it this way: the world's scientists overwhelmingly agree that we are already undergoing the effects of climate change, yet more than half of the government calls them fools and refuses to act. Economists like David Levy warned of the global financial crisis before '07 but nobody listened.

If people in our world can't be convinced to do something, what makes you think another planet would be any different- especially when just one guy is warning them?

Krypton had an extremely rigid, backwards society. They had a caste system, and depending on continuity they also shunned personal interaction. They were also extremely xenophobic, and depending on continuity they also had a genetic modifier in them that killed them if they ever left their planet (Jor-El fixed this defect for his son).

What Jor-El proposed was heretical in not one but like 4 levels simultaneously.
- Krypton blowing up due to weapons we defeated 100000 years ago? Bringing up that past is heresy!
- Build starships where all kryptonians are cooped up together? Heresy!
- Escape from Krypton into the stars? Heresy!
- Live on some other poor ass-backwards planet? Heresy!

Plus the councils instruments could not verify his claims either, and they were too preoccupied with finding a cure for the Green Plague (green K poisoning caused by the core of the planet going radioactive). Jor-El looked into the cause of that and noticed that the planet is about to explode, so timing may have been a factor too - they simply didn't have enough time.

As funny as that is, it's not really an equivalent. Jor-El was not some bumbling hick, he was one of the top scientific minds in the planet, and space travel and the existence of life in other planets was commonplace in Krypton, so he wasn't just strapping a baby into a tin rocket.

You know, if they had a planet full of Kryptonite, it makes you wonder why the cosmic bad guys didn't use it more often - there was ample supply.

I think Cyborg Superman used a piece as the core of his ships fusion reactor in the Death & Return storyline, but that was it.

The pre-Crisis explanation is as follows, mind you this was the 'Buck Rogers with handbands' Krypton.

-Although they had pretty good internal tech they were nervous about space exploration since they had been conquered by an invading alien race called the Vrangs & didn't know what else could be out there. They had lunar colonies and were inching towards galactic exploration.

-When Jor-El discovered Krypton was doomed a lot of peers and a good chunk of the population DID believe him (Jor-El was a rock star of science), and a massive exodus movement taking place with space arks being prepped. Problem was that Kandor was the staging ground, so it was kind of ironic that the Kandroians were mostly folks who thought Jor-El was right were scooped up by Braniac

- Jor-El lost his support, his followers & a lot of his will.

- Jax-Ur, their top rocket scientist was testing missiles to stage a coup & accidentally blew up one of their Moons with its colonists.

- After the trial the Science Council decide they really didn't NEED to go into space & voted to ban all experiments in rocketry & space travel. Even to the point that they would arrest aliens who visited (like Mon-El) cuz they arrived in space-ships.

-Jor-El had to do all his experiments in secret and was being spied on by the Science Council who wanted to pull the trigger on him. Thats why Clark's rocket was so small, it was one of Jor-El's of backyard prototypes.

Anyways the World Of Krypton series is a fun read and tries to make all the silver age goofiness a little more plausible. There was a sequel series about the history of Krypton that shows the Vrang invasion but it gets monotonous since it shows that damn near EVERY major discovery or event in the planets history was made by an ancestor of Superman.

The story of the demise of Krypton is the story of intellectual and technological hubris. Him landing in bumfuck Kansas is as jarring of a change of scenery as it gets, but also commentary of the contrast of the two cultures.
