Tonight I will be storytiming the first six issues of Gail Simone's horror comic Clean Room. The basic premise is that a woman tries to investigate a self-help organization after her fiance commits suicide following an encounter with them. Spoilers will be used for reveals, and for the occasional nudity

>WHALE Simone
>recommended by Scott Snyder
No thanks.

You forgot
>P.S.: There are lesbians
Gotta get these plebs to read somehow.
>>88942159
Rude.
You could've at least said hi back
>>88942193
Should I promise them bestiality later too? (although that never happens)
>>88942061
>swimming in your underwear
why would anyone do this
Other than this first issue, I don't think Killian has been drawn this dark ever since. In fact, both characters have gotten lighter
>>88942404
In both character and appearance, huh
>>88942426
She was definitely in "break your arms" mode in this issue
L. Ron Hubbard and her racially and sexually diverse enforcers!
Hey, look at all these Vertigo titles that no one has heard of since they all sell less than 5K copies each month (including this one).
This is the only ad I'll be showing
It looks like they sent a draft out to as many horror writers as they could think of for a title pull quote
>>88942496
Oh man, I forgot about the psycho Asian chick somehow.
>>88942588
Her actions in the second set of issues are hilarious
Come to think of it, I don't think the Black Rook ever gets a name
If you haven't realized it yet, this are "definitely not" scientologists
Time for the auditing, including Simone's sexual stuff
Does having a labia ring make you kinky? No wonder someone in that room wanted to screw her.
I just noticed they have Todd Klein on lettering. Good to see he still does some work
>>88942819
Well that was fast. I expected that to take a bit longer to see their clean room
>>88942906
There's actually a pretty brisk pace, given that I think DC knew that the new Vertigo titles might take off
>>88942906
It's really what's inside that the plot is about.
>>88941890
Fuck off meme spewer
I just read some of Moore's swamp thing last night, not realizing that the "white monkeys" in this could be a reference to one of his early stories
>>88942943
Thanks for the bump
I don't think Chole realizes just how out of her league this entire business is.
>>88943056
Seriously, the money this bitch has is gonna make 'destroying' this place pretty hard.
Draw the street sign, I haven't had that one yet...
I really like these covers
>>88943126
That's what he gets
His mother warned him
>>88942193
Angry, thirsty lesbians even.
>>88943234
What I kind of got from that is that Simone might have a thing for brown women
Great, now what fucked up serial killer is Astrid auditing...
The neighbours. So dumb, so nice.
>>88942519
Unfollow is the only one still going isn't it?
Frostbite is a really good comic by Vertigo standards, I hope it lasts.
Jet fuel can't melt steel beams
>>88943056
This protagonist is a fucking idiot.
>>88943369
I think Unfollow is solicited until #17 at least, same as Clean Room. It could just be usual solicitation hyperbole, but it sounds like it's part one of a two part finale for Clean Room. Given that each copy sells less thank 5000 units, I'm not too suprised. I'll look into Frostbite
>>88943426
Thankfully she realizes that shortly
This design is pretty lame
Those boys sure are sturdy
This guy's design really reminds me of that one Authority:Kev miniseries, with the monster that kept repeating "I am a Vagina!"
Not-Scientology's reach is wide
Killian is already looking much whiter than before, even though she still has the mullet thing
Now we return to audit
>>88943437
>Ending it at #18
Nooo! It has to go to at least 25.
This is the first sign, maybe besides the haircut, that Killian is very thirsty
It's good to see that they learned their lessons from Alien
(aka the dude who ran her over, if you missed the name earlier)
Huh, most of this issue will end up being spoiler-tagged
>>88943537
It's a very Stephen King design to me.
So, we're not going to see what was in the bathroom stall?
And why was gas-guy suddenly assaulting her?
Astrid's supposed to be in her mid to late 30s, but the art never really gives that away
>>88943824
I think gas guy was just an angry person, but given one of the themes of the story is emotional manipulation, something could have been bugging him
Simone and her perv's
>>88943904
Is the cloudbuster the clean room?
Yes, the scar is a thing
>>88943953It appears before the end of the trade....and is kind of disappointing
I think the equivalent to this would be Tom Cruise denouncing scientology then killing himself
They fixed that door pretty quickly
>>88944142
I like these guys!
They're gonna die horribly aren't they?
This guy is sounding a little like >>88941890
>>88944142
>Nice southern ginger men
Foursome when?!Much dick!
>>88944182
I think death would be too easy for what the entities like to do
Literally:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology_controversies#.22Dead_agenting.22
and man, Scientologists have excellent SEO skills. I googled "scientology targets" and got a page full of positive recruiting stuff. I was looking for that one journalist that they framed with bomb threats, but wikipedia worked out instead
Dammit Terry, you fucking idiot!
The entities are almost operating on vampire logic here
Diplomacy: not Killian's strong suit
>>88944388
>vampire logic
que?
I picture her as Brie Larson
>>88943662
>dead at 2(7?)
>>88944482
>dead at 33
>>88944547
Yaas, Queen!
>>88944537
Old vampire logic, about how they have to be invited in to a room in some scenarios
>>88944558
Nice catch, there have been a few of those mistakes through the series. The town that Chole lives in is renamed Clearwater in one of the latest issues, AKA where the scientologists actually live, not Greenwater
The back massage thing seems more power related than sex related for Capitone
>>88944618
>>88944585that bush
Sorry >>88944182
>>88944680
that rapeface in bottom right
Aww yeah
Have a bump for the good stuff.
Unnamed Black Rook, stating the obvious once again
>>88944722
Thanks man
>>88944694
Well Fuck
Really Killian, does the little tech guy really need the gun waved at him? Hey, Black guy has a name: Raven
>>88944892
>>88944910
This always freaks me out because it makes me think of how precisely Astrid must have lived her life from the accident. Like she needs this people she's subordinated to her will, but she also needs them to have these critical failures in their psyche. And the organization as a whole sifts for that. Makes her friend comment really mean something.
Klein was definitely chosen for all the different sets of lettering in the series
No wonder they have their own private cemetery
>>88944928This comes up again with her lack of wanting any physical contact with people
Last issue of the night, and last issue in the first trade
Was the quote on this page from a notable Swamp Thing run, or could they just not get one from anyone else?
Green Water, Florida. This abruptly changes to Clearwater, aka the real life headquarters of Scientology.
This is the level of scientology that Paul Haggis got to, then said WTF and ran away
The artist actually put effort into a reaction page!
>>88945057
bout to learn about Xenu and thetans and shit
>>88945089
The easiest way to describe the series would be "what if scientology wasn't full of shit?" but that would reveal some things a little early
>>88945125
>>88945142
I find this pretty King as well. More southern, but.
>>88941864
This is honestly pretty great so far. Thanks much OP!
>>88945264
Np, I went back a few months into the archive and could not find any story times for it
>>88945293
She's pretty calm for being chased by a possibly unkillable meat puppet thing
The cloudbuster is a little underwhelming
>>88945337
There's a point in human consciousness where you've gone past the fight or flight instinct, and you end up in one of two states: panicking, or feeling like the whole world has turned surreal.
She's in the latter.
>>88945350
You were not wrong.
It's just a cannon. From all the crazy that dude was spouting I was expecting something...different
>>88945373
You gotta see it as a giant metaphysical penis.
>>88945373
A cannon built with alien tech, but a cannon nontheless
>>88945385
that is not a coincidence given who built it
>>88945399
These are the nicest fucking neighbours.
>>88945399
Thank God he made out alive. I didn't any of the Ginger boys to die.
End of trade one. This reads like Simone was given six issues to write a story, with space to continue it later. Given that the most recent sales numbers (November 2016) place issue #13 at 5658 sales, the series will probably end at #18
I'll continue the second trade (7-12) tomorrow night. Thanks for reading!
>>88945448
Thank you for the storytime.
>>88945448
this was entertaining.
Thanks anon.
>>88945466
Indeed, this is probably the first thing Gail has written in a long time that I've enjoyed.
>>88945448
I really do adore the hook for this series. I'm pretty interested in how it's gonna finish.
>>88945466
>>88945497
The second trade was actually released last week, so if you find it interesting, considered picking it up. I wouldn't normally beg for sales, but this title is certainly hurting
>>88942028
Tomorrow: The really fucked up stuff starts
>>88944197
This 4th wall break feels a little Wanted-esque if it is one
>>88942229
...
because she wanted to kill herself?
>>88946299
But she's a writer herself
>>88946826
maybe she was apologizing for the awfulness of n52 secret six?
>>88945691
This
capone is pure waifu
>>88942496
Look at this squad of sub bosses.
>>88948253
She has a few good scenes in vol 2
>>88948253
Capone is the WORST.
Thanks for storytiming OP. I'm caught up on this and I really surprisingly have enjoyed it. I do think the last few issues have given a hint of being rushed though, which is a bit of a shame.
>>88948914
how?
>>88949030
I think everyone was blindsided by the artist being tapped for the Wildstorm Project, resulting in kind of scrambled art after issue 12. It sucks because I believe that if this was over at Image, it would be pulling higher numbers.
>>88949239
Hello white Chole
>>88942545
I ahve no idea what the fuck I just read. This goes from 0 to 60 in 1 page. poor hook
>>88942519
As a Scot myself, Red thorn was just more doctor who monster of the week shit. Slash and burn was pretty novel though.
>>88942193
Black girl's good enough for me.
Reading bump
Part 2:
>>88956255
>>88953571
As another Scot can confirm this Scot's opinion. I always hate stuff like Red Thorn.
>>88945448
Also Jon Davis-Hunt left after two full arcs because he's chosen to be The Wild Storm artist. The new Clean Room artist is Walter Geovani, a Red Sonja artist.
>>88956338
Thanks
>>88945243
I'll give her B for the effort. She must be pretty strong to be able to stab a skull with kitchen knives.
>>88942359
>I'm being watched
R E B I R T H
>>88944585
Well I'm turned on
Reading bump, this is weird and im not sure if i like it yet
