Snap, that's a hell of a callback; I didn't even remember she had a hairclip in her original design.

I just remembered how awful she used to look

>>

This reminds me of how much Gunnerkrigg's art improved over the years.

I wonder what chapter marks a clear stage where it'd be considered great.
>>
>>88927110
i like how annie isn't paying any attention to smitty
>>
>>88927159
Neil Gaiman already said it is, which makes it so.
>>
>>88927184
She's feyfolk.

Just be happy she doesn't kidnap a baby or accidentally destroy the concept of Saturday.
>>
LEEPEST DORE
>>
>>88927159
Really subjective question, and the change wasn't constant, but if you ask me:

Dobranoc, Gamma was the first chapter that hit on some of the fantastic writing/art Tom would get to regularly later on.

A Ghost Story was pretty amazing from start to finish.

Coyote Stories showed how ambitious Tom could get with his art.

the run of chapters from Sky Watcher and the Angel through Parley and Smitty Are In This One is a near-flawless run in my mind.

But Divine is the chapter that Tom has yet to top in terms of art, pacing, writing, characters, reveals, lore...everything.
>>
>>88927207
Frigging feyfolk, always destroying concepts all willy nilly.

If any of you remembered when they destroyed the concept of regular threesomes, you'd be pissed too.
>>

Annie is literally 100% autistic holy shit, she's got the empathy of a fucking toddler hahaha I'm dying, fucking christ! :D

>Sky Watcher and the Angel

This page actually made me emotional, almost as much as See Ya!

And the weird thing is I don't know why, maybe it's just that well-written?
>>
>>88927110
>scary ghost fuccboi chases you all through the ether
>turns out he's actually just a normal fuccboi sitting alone in a small room
>no wait, he's ACTUALLY actually a friendly zombie fuccboi
>he was trying to return the hair clip the entire time
>you smile sweetly at him as your friend dies painfully a few feet away
>>
>>88927154
>anything in GC having lasting, irreparable consequences
>>
Well Smitty's still dying, but at least her hair is neat.
>>
>>88927263
Remember she is doing her best to refrain from having emotions as emoting runs the risk of burning down everything
>>
>>88927110
OH MY GOD, my friend is dy- oh my hairclip! Thank you, friendly Zombie. How very nice of you. This is a lucky day for me.
>>
>>88927287
Stop reminding me why I'm on the verge of dropping this webcomic.
>>
>>88927290
Yes, just like Raven, when she didn't care about one of her friends dying.
Oh wait that never happened.
Plus, if Raven emotes too much, the whole dimension burns down, if Annie emotes too much, her clothes get singed.
>>
>>88927110
Bah, her hair looked better tucked behind her ear.
>>
>>88927184
My guess is that he's actually fine, and she knows it, so she's not getting worked up. They might even call her out on it, only for her to open his shirt and show the dagger conveniently stuck in something else that he had in a pocket or whatever.

It's like the scene where Frodo gets speared in the chest.
>>
>>88927110
Just gonna steal a post

>The subtle, horrific implication is that he was aware of everything going on around him that whole time. Fuckin' hell, man.
>>
>>88927351
I predict this too
>>
Talk about your reincorporations, holy fuck
>>
>>88927110
But it's ugly!

Also, it's a good thing Andrew was wearing that stove plate!
>>
>>88927351
Except Frodo had a reason to feel pain, He was stabbed by a giant spear and sure broke at least a few ribs.
Smitty was stabbed by a super flimsy not-even-dagger. If anything was there to stop the penetration he SHOULD be completely fine, with nothing so much as a bruise left behind.
Now , Tom IS of course a hack and a swindler and a fraud, but it's hard to see how he could possibly wind himself outta this one.
I know Smitty isn't gonna die and that makes me mad.
>>
>>88927440
Usually people root for the heroes, not against them.
>>
Even if Smitty isn't gonna die, this chapter did have some nice stuff.
Annie saw godKat, for instance.
Also, Annie's utter retardation on this page is some more good fap fuel.
>>
>>88927469
I root for the story.
To continue the lotr analogy, how stupid would it have been if for example Boromir had survived?
>>
>>88927500
And how fucking stupid would it've been if Han Solo died during the death star trench run? Not every story follows the same structure and it's weird to try to impose rules on what's going on when you have no idea what the end game is for any of these characters.

>>
So the elf is going to stay around and join the cast, right?
>>
>>88927522
No. The zombie is going to make out with the ghost and then they'll be carried off to heaven by the giant birdman.
>>
>>88927515
That's stupid. Star Wars still has sacrifice.
Yoda and Obi Wan died, so did almost all of Rogue squadron, Solo died in the new one etc.
Give me a single example in Gunnerkrigg where the stakes were high and the consequences never were the same.
Even if you compare it to Harry Potter, which is probably the most prudent comparison, we're about at the point where Black died. Gunnerkrigg needs to up the stakes to keep from veering into Slice of Life, which it's dangerously close to going into.
That's not to say Slice of Life is bad, just that Gunnerkrigg wasn't designed to be a Slice of Life story and it would be way too boring to exist as one.
>>
How the fuck could Elfdude get that hairclip if his hands were covered up all the time?
>>
>>88927522

> Jeanne fucks off into the Ether

> Green elf-boy cock now available for Annie

It got sucked in through the wrist holes by the flow of the water through pure chance.

>>
>>88927651
Haha, Annie would suck his dick right then and there, as Smitty was dying! :D
>>
>>88927651
Oh god, I can already see it.

>Elf zombie sticks around, stops being a zombie and becomes hot again.
>"He gave me back my hairclip, that means he loves me!"
>Walks in on him staring forlornly at old Jeane pics.
>Cries herself to sleep.
>>
The knife magically went into coyote's tooth that he was hiding under his clothes
>>
>>88927695
>Annie grows her hair long again and bleaches it blond.
>Starts speaking in an accent.
>>
>>88927699
That explains why it looks like it's sticking in so deep, it was simply pulverized as it touched the tooth!
And Smitty is in pain because the tooth just cut a bit of his tits off!

>>
>>88927717
You're way off the mark. The knife went INTO the tooth, like a black tar pit, pinning his clothes against him where the knife went into. Meaning he's so distraught because his clothes are totally ruined now, he'll look like a fool with his clothes having a hole where his nipple is. How embarrassing. Think of how it'll look if anyone sees him and all these girls coming back with him looking disheveled and tired
>>
>>88927744
His super luck is going to have him die and his ether soul will land into Cookie, possession style. And SmithyCookie hybrid will see George to kingdom cum

Hack writing is when the explanation doesn't make sense.

>>88928371
>>88928354
We don't know if those green dudes have regeneration skill. For all we know, it's just the etheric link between him and Jeanne acting on.

something similar to Mort getting his old body back when he was brought back to the ether.

All we are seeing might just be ether vision, meaning Kat is only seeing Mr; skeleton giving Annie an hair clip.
>>
>>88928409
well, his skeleton did get swept away, so it might really be an ether thing.
>>
>>88927110

Annie's mum does seem to have a more noticeable Yorkshire accent so this is probably her father's influence, also.

eww what a awful and old sounding voice.

I don't get why people are so obsessed on wanting to hear the voice of characters. Personally no actual real voice will ever match how I read them since I don't really focus on giing them an actual detailed voice, rather than just the effects of hearing their voice.

Story progression demands bloodshed. It's not about the people who die being heroes or villains, it's about nothing being able to happen in the story if it doesn't incur a cost in human lives.

What?
No, he definitely died.
He was reincarnated as Gandalf the White, who is technically a different person.
He was brought back by God.
What I meant was that this character growth that he experienced, his strengthened power and resolve and clarity, was only made possible by recovering from a trauma such as death.
>>
>>88930255

Is it an analogy to Siddell losing the scripts to the Zimmy side comic?

>>
>>88931038
My take on it is that she could only do so by convincing Jeanne what was disturbing her was this faceless swordman.
>>
>>88931042
If he reincarnated into a different person why wasn't Gandalf the White a baby? Was he born an old man? Who are his parents?
>>
>>88931063
Yes, he died.
He was brought back by the God of the LotR universe.
Saruman and Sauron (probably) died, too, but they weren't brought back, because they were naughty.
>>88931099
The Istari were always in the bodies of old men. It's a disguise they have worn since they arrived in middle-earth. They don't really age.

But he was never a real old man to begin with. He was a maia.
>>
>>88931120
>The Istari were always in the bodies of old men. It's a disguise they have worn since they arrived in middle-earth. They don't really age.
Okay, I talked without knowing shit, but now I've googled and I can tell with certainty you're full of bullshit.
>>
>>88931228
>>88931234
Now that's just splitting hairs.
>>88931263
How so? I just googled it as well and even the wikipedia article has this information. I don't know what weird site you're using, but it's wrong.
>>
>>88931312
>Now that's just splitting hairs.
Well so was "Gandalf the White is not the same person as Gandalf the Grey"
>>
>>88929830
when you want the world to stop spinning I guess
>>
>>88931312
Well, to begin with, the maiar are immortal.

If their physical bodie die their spirit wanders houseless and their power diminished, until they are either able to take physical form once more, or are restored by their corresponding Valar.

Sauron and Saruman did not truly die, they were forbidden from returning (and Sauron became a lesser evil spirit when the ring was destroyed).

A Maia reforming again doesn't mean they're a different person. Not even "technically".
>>
>>88931372
True, but I was being cheeky about it. ;P
>>
>>88931402
He wasn't brought back by the Valar though.
He was truly dead.
>>
>>88931425
>He was truly dead.
No he wasn't.
>>
>>88931120
it's not a disguise. They are really men, not just disguised as ones. That was necessary because after the war of power Eru sundered the land of the Valar from middle earth and from then on Valar and Maiar were not to interfere directly with the affairs of men.
So when the Valar decided to send 5 maiar to help out the Free People they had to become literally Men, and lose most of their knowledge(because ther human brain couldn't contain all of it) save for some sense of what is the right action to do.
So the Man Gandalf the Grey did actually die, but not the Maia that had become him, and was returned to earth as the Man Gandalf the White.

A main gauche is primarily for parrying, but it IS sharp and they were sometimes used to attack. It's a sharp piece of metal that's been jammed into his chest, does that sound healthy?
>>
>>88931464
It's a story where god exists. There is no other being in this story who was able to bring him back. You could argue that because there's a god, death is meaningless, but the point stands that if the only being able to bring you back is God, who, by definition, is able to do absolutely anything, then you are dead for all intensive purposes.

The fact that he was brought back by god doesn't mean he was dead. His physical body died, but he -as the Maia he is- was still alive. Would it be different if he had been brought back by a Valar?
>>
>>88931624
My point was, that if there was a book or a watch or whatever to stop it, it wouldn't be painful at all.
If you would stab me with this thing in my protective Bible, I'd feel no pain. It simply doesn't have the mass to carry enough force to hurt.

We actually had a thread last the entire time between updates earlier.
>>
>>88931312
>Now that's just splitting hairs.
It's no more splitting hair than saying Gandalf the white isn't the same as Gandalf the Grey.
>>
>>88931735
Yes, because the Valar couldn't bring him back.
He was lost.
>>
>>88931776
>Yes, because the Valar couldn't bring him back.
>He was lost.
It's the Valar that brought him back. i don't think Iluvatar was involved.

fuck, it's the Valars that gave him an old man body in the first place.
>>
>>88931808
Do I really have to fucking look it up?
Jesus.
Shortened relevant quote:
"Gandalf really 'died', and was changed: for that seems to me the only real cheating, to represent anything that can be called 'death' as making no difference... He was sent by a mere prudent plan of the angelic Valar or govenors; but Authority had taken up this plan and enlarged it, at the moment of its failure. 'Naked I was sent back- for a brief time, until my task is done'. Sent back by whom, and whence? Not by the 'gods' whose business is only with this embodied world and its time; for he passed 'out of thought and time'. Naked is alas! unclear. It was meant just literally, 'unclothed like a child' (not disincarnate), and so ready to receive the white robes of the highest. Galadriel's power is not divine, and his healing in Lorien is meant to be no more than physical healing and refreshment."

Happy?
>>
>>88931735
gandalf the Man was dead, his spirit wasn't, but then that's the same for all living being in LotR
I gave a larger explanation in this post>>88931618
>>
>>88932030
So Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White are the same character.
>>
>>88932073
In a way, but also not.
>>
>>88932097
>>88932073
He was brought back for a limited time, far more powerful, but also far less human.
You could say that the 'real' Gandalf died and a copy made for one purpose - to defeat Sauron - was brought back in his place.
>>
>>88932097
In all ways yes. Like stated there >>88930842
It's the same as someone going through a big experience. That doesn't make him a different character, just a changed one.
>>
>>88932174
So?
Tolkien is a hack, too, then.
He acknowledged it himself, too, in that letter I quoted.
Bringing him back from death was (or at least felt like) cheating, in a way.
It's just that for me, the character change was enough. Calling it death was justified in my opinion.
I don't know about you, but I don't feel like Gandalf the White was a cop out.
It was still a sacrifice in the eyes of the character. Gandalf didn't assume he'd be able to come back. He sacrificed his life for the fellowship.
>>
>>88932294
>I don't know about you, but I don't feel like Gandalf the White was a cop out.
Neither do I.

Today we learned that Smitty is Gandalf.

He fight with another eternal spirit, thirds one of darkness, in the bowels of Middle Earth where even an echo of the sun will never shine and was mortally injured, not just in body but in soul. His body and soul were recovered by eagles (in this case also immortal spirits/angels) and laid on top of the tallest peak, where he was restored to life by either the gods or Eru, who is God. I forget.

We have different tastes. As a Londoner I find the soft Yorkshire voice quite soothing.

me neither but it jars when they choose a voice that clearly doesn't fit, such as an American for a Brit, or posh for Zimmy.

Really? When was the last time we saw Tony? And it seems to me that all his hard changes to Annie's life have been gradually brushed away. She still hangs out with all her same friends, and she even gets to see Renard fairly frequently. Also, Coyote came and ensured that she could still go to the Forest.
