What could he have done to spot it anyway, realistically speaking? I doubt he'd be fast enough to reach the planes, let alone enter them, disable the terrorists and somehow rescue everyone in both planes before they crashed.

His best option would have been bring down the planes, which would have still killed the passangers and most likely a lot of grounded civilians as well.

It would have been a lose-lose situation for him.

Superheroes never step in until something has happened to alert them. Doctor Doom sets a city block on fire, the Fantastic Four know to step in before it gets worse.

Planes crash into a tower, and it's already over and done with.They help with search and rescue. They aren't precognizant and able to prevent the entire thing from happening.

Far worse events have happened in history and America is just acting like a pussy about it because it's the first time it got attacked or something?

And not only is 9/11 still in pretty recent memory of most people in America, but it's EXTREMELY rare to have real-time footage of one event from start to finish. Like, if we had "as it happened" footage of the atomic bomb, people would be way more sympathetic to the event rather than feeling pretty detached to it.
