I have always got that idea tat the Diamond authority are the sole survivors of a previous gem civilisation collapse.

I think being of Pink Diamond makes more sense, seeing that all the diamonds have some specific aspects; pink seemed combat oriented, blue more related with the mind, phylosophy and that stuff and yellow it's more like logistics and technology oriented. My personal theory is that Pink Diamond basically enacted suicide by cop.
Rose showed her humans weren't unthinking blobs of meat, two became semi-friends over humanity, Pink couldn't give up on Earth though, Pink built the zoo to try and assuage her own guilt, Rose didn't think it was enough, Pink was too much of a coward to even admit to her sisters she didn't want to destroy the Earth and the humans, basically forced Rose to kill her so she wouldn't be forced to do it (Knowing that Rose would actually be able to save the Earth)
