Scenario: Mark Gruenwald comes back from the dead.
How does he react to modern Marvel?
>>
He immediately dies again in shame and disgust.
>>
>>88890510
He locks himself in a room with every single thing Marvel has published since his death, three months later he emerges with a way to work everything into a coherent canon.
>>
>>88891253
>Only to find out that during those 3 months his coherent canon is not compatible with what happened during said months
>>
>>88891285
Yeah, but it's only three months. He'd have it all figured out before the next issues drop.
>>
By putting a bullet on Bendis' head
>>
How would he react to Captain American and the MCU?
>>
He would be bros with Ewing.

I wonder how he would react to Thunderbolts.

Who is this guy, and why should I care?

Did DC ever have their own Gruenwald equivalent?
>>
>>88895347
He was pretty much the guy keeping Marvel's continuity in check, wrote one of the definitive Captain America runs (he tried his best giving Steve Rogers a good rogue's gallery), and encouraged writers to reuse old, forgotten characters and reinvent them to make them work.
>>
>>88896619
You're forgetting the fact that he wrote Squadron Supreme, which was arguable the greatest Marvel Comics limited series of all time.
>>
>>88895910
Does Grant Morrison count?
IIRC he said he wanted to have sex with the DC Universe
>>
>>88890510
Crawls back in the casket to get away from it.
>>
>>88897262
Would he be surprised at how his will wasn't followed?
He specifically said that he wanted his ashes to be mixed with comic book ink
>>
>>88890510
He makes his way through the building punching and slapping staff left and right. Flips monitors and printers off their desks calling them "contraptions".
Makes way to the editor in chief's office takes off his belt and begins to whip Axel Alonso. Security will rush into the room tasers drawn.
Mark Gruenwald will turn to them and as he faces there direction turn into smoke.

I knew about the Thor TVA cameo, but where is this from?
>>
>>88897214
Ehhhhhh I was talking more at-the-time, when continuity was a part of the job. Morrison only got in a position of power in the "modern era" after the people writing had stopped giving a shit about continuity and knowing this obscure shit was novel.
>>88898505
Fantastic Four Annual, 27 I think. Following on from a story in Fantastic Four.
>>
>>88890526
Was it really Liefield's art that took Gru's life?
>>
>>88899245
Who knows? The timing suggest so. Then again the timing suggests that wrestling Ken Anderson will kill you too.

I left very clear instructions for a reason - that ink was supposed to help me come back from the dead, like in those Hammer pictures. Without it, I had to come back from the dead the long way. The whole ordeal added 15 years onto my commute."
>>
I kind of wish we knew what he thought of the MCU.

Grunwald was the guy who started the Marvel Encyclopedia. He knew everything down to what issue things happened. In fact, there was a game he and Mark Waid (was it him?) would play at Cons where if their tables were close to each other, one would shout something that happened in a Justice League issue, and the other would respond with the number.

He was the guy who was on Captain America for a full 11 years, and also created the Squadron Supreme. He created a lot of common Captain America characters like Crossbones, Diamondback, US Agent, and the whole Serpent Society.

When he died, most of the Marvel office thought it was a prank he was trying to pull. The dark rumor is that he picked up a copy of Rob Liefeld's Captain America: Heroes Reborn preview issue over the weekend, and never came back cause he had a heart attack.

Also, he had a Captain America Shield that so many of the employees chucked around the office that eventually they banned throwing it cause they broke so much shit. That same shield was the one Quesada gave to Colbert.

>>
>>88895910
Gruenwald actually worked at DC for a time before going to Marvel in the '70s. I have a hard time thinking of who would've been their equivalent to him though. Maybe Waid in the '90s and Roy Thomas in the '80s.
>>
>>88899794
It's the fucked up body proportions of the characters, (The infamous picture of Captain America's bizarre giant tits and inflated chest picture came from that book) and the "X-treme" 90's look that is much of the source of ridicule.
>>
>>88899794
It was the infamous "Cap with the huge chest" issue.

I always found Grunwald's Cap such a weird tone. There's a moment where Cap stops a kid who was stealing comics and he sees they are Cap comics, asking would Cap steal? The kid says that he plans to sell them, and the owner of the comics says nobody cares about Cap anymore compared to Wolverine and the Punisher, and Cap asks himself if he's old fashion cause he's so old. This is peculiar coming from a run where rape and even pedophila are topics that get brought up regularly. Some of the backup Diamondback stories get pretty dark as well with how much abuse she goes through.

Are there any Gruenwald shoutouts in any of the Captain America films? You'd expect a writer who lasted 11 years on the character would have a throwaway mention at some point. I know they usually have a Pegasus Agent named Gruenwald in both the Ultimate and 616 Universes.

If they ever do a "Gruenwald movie" I'd rather it be Quasar desu. Man had a mind for cosmic.

>>88899794
It's a joke anon. The guy had an unknown heart problem. He went home on a Friday to edit some comics (Heroes Reborn Cap being among them) and died over the weekend due to the heart problem. The joke, of course, is that Liefeld's Cap was so bad that it killed him.

And he actually did get his ashes mixed in with the ink. Again, the story goes that as a request he wanted his ashes mixed in with the ink on the first printings of the Squadron Supreme TPB. I wonder if there's anyone out there that actually has one of those copies.

Might have gone away like Chris Clearemont in that regard. He always did base his villains around some form of political issue. The Serpent Society was based on unions, Superia was an uber feminst, and Americop was pretty much extreme justice.

>“I want to take you back for a minute, to the 1980s; most of you remember the fight at Marvel over [Jack Kirby’s] original art being returned…. I had a few people within Marvel who were acting like I was Bob Woodward, and they were Deep Throat, meeting in parking garages and feeding me information. I can give you the names of two of them because they’ve both passed away. One was a man named Mark Gruenwald, and the other was a lady named Carol Kalish, who was the head of Marvel’s Direct Sales Department at the time, and they were feeding me inside information and such.”

There is a difference though in that Gru didn't seem to take sides. His villains were both the far-right and the far-left. He could fight a piece of shit neo-Nazi like Crossbones and an outright misandrist like Superia. It very much seemed to take a middle road of "our country walks a very thin tight rope with winds trying to blow it off one side or the other" deal. He sure as shit would not go to the ridiculous white guilt apoplectic bullshit that someone like Spencer does. He'd do a story arc about political extremes then follow it up with a story where Cap fights werewolves or something.
>>
>>88900567
Who's the other one? DeFalco?

He kills everyone responsible at Marvel before committing suicide.

I always found it funny how his Diamondback relationship with Cap. I mean, she started out as a sex crazed bumbling bimbo, but even when she did become a good guy, there was always this sex theme to her, or how she gets wrapped up in dark shit like when she kills Snapdragon. It felt like she was supposed to represent something through the book, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Either that or she was just an over the top love interest.
>>
>>88900876
He'd backflip all the way into his coffin
>>
Gruenwald and Ewing would riff off each other and Gruenwald would probably enjoy working with Spencer too, honestly. I think he'd hate Bendis and be incredibly frustrated with editorial. I don't think he'd have any special reaction to the movies.
>>
>>88901002
I don't know, I think he would be amazed by the Cap films. Keep in mind, Gruenwald died before Brubaker's run, where the Winter Soldier twist was something that even at Marvel the writers didn't believe could be done.
>>
>>88901040
I was just thinking that Winter Soldier really takes more from Brubaker but I guess maybe you're right. I'm thinking more if Gru never died than Gru suddenly resurrected.

Of course the WS movie was apparently a significant part of Brubaker fucking off cape books forever.
>>
>>88900929
Well if it can be argued that to him, Cap represents sort of the picture-esque bald eagles and apple pie version of the American Dream, then Diamondback is the grimy, trashy, decayed, nightmare version of it. Their very natures are conflicting yet, somehow, it's able to work allowing them to meet in the middle. I'm probably talking out of my ass though.

With great disappointment, probably.
The modern contempt for continuity is basically the exact opposite of his personal philosophy with regards to comics.
>>
>>88897672
He'd probably need to go steal his Cap Shield back from Stephen Colbert first.
>>
What if he never died?
>>
>>88894658
He'd probably like the movies but he would probably think the Sam Cap run is a little one sided politically. And based on this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saD2pP-PvX0
He might not think highly of an evil Steve Rogers.
>>
>>88901992
What if he was aware of cosmic cube fuckery?
Avengers vs X-Men would've pissed him off though.
>>
>>88901790
Honestly even if it was likely done with his family's blessings, I find taking the shield that Gru himself had made of his seemingly favorite character, the character he helped define, and giving it to a comedian as part of the comedian's joke character incredibly disrespectful.
