the truth is likely a lot darker. if you look at the history of civilizations like the Maori; stronger tribes would constantly enslave, genocide, and cannibalize, weaker tribes all the time. Weak tribes, forced to flee, would pack up everything (their pigs and yams), and just sail away without a destination, living on fishing and rainwater. It was more like Waterworld than happy brave exploration. Most of them would die, or go "backwards" to the Eurasian continent. Some of them would find unpopulated islands in the Pacific.
