Paulo is almost a carbon copy of my best friend back in high school. He was always bit a tough case back then. I eventually moved to the other side of the country after high school but his life kind of went to shit, never continued his education after school. He could barely hold down a job. Turned out he had untreated ADHD and ended up self-medicating by smoking a ton of weed.

I went home again to visit in my mid-twenties and the dude cried at my wedding and he broke down when I gave him a ride home and he was half-drunk talking about how he probably would've gone to college if he had a buddy to hang out with.

He's still a womanizer, and consistently cheats on the girls he does go steady with. I always feel bad I didn't stick around and been a better friend to him. In the end, I don't think he really had anyone else.

I've been reading since Paulo and Jasmine were still together during that Halloween edition. It was actually a thread here that got me to do. People in the thread were shitting on it, but there were some pages from the comic posted and I liked them so I decided to give it a shot. The longest I've ever kept with a webcomic to be honest, I always look forwards to updates and I anticipate finding out what Lucy is going to say about Augustus tomorrow.

You know, I was just thinking about how it's hilarious that a spoof of a pretty boy Final Fantasy villain turned out to be so popular, but I'm not all that surprised. The formula works. The bishounen edginess appeals to fangirls, and there's enough good substance to his personality with how witty and blunt he is to be good with the guys as well. His backstory makes his degenerate actions more understanding and sympathetic, and he still tries to do good by people in need (notably girls, not sure if he'd go so far for any men) even with his background. Taeshi unintentionally created a great character people wanted to see more of, and I think what's happening now is because she gets that.

I still remember back in the day people thought this was a happy end to the chapter and were so shocked when Lucy left right after, but I don't get why? This page ends on a pretty bad feeling. Mike still not fully apologizing, and Lucy still dead inside with the last panel being a sad smile that doesn't show her eyes. "That'd be nice" pretty clearly had an implied "if it wasn't already far too late" after it. The whole chapter reads as Lucy giving her friends goodbye presents before she ends it.

You know, everything could be solved if Paulo sucked it up and talk it out with Abbey. Not try to be friends, but admit that he was an ass, and even though they'll probably never get along, agree to call truce and stop antagonizing him. Then Abbey talks to Daisy and they agree that the relationship isn't working and they should just be friends. Boom, table dynamics are better than they ever were and everyone gets along.

Of course there's no chance of this happening. It wouldn't be dramatic enough.
