>Mommy, where do judges come from?
This is it, /co/! Everything you ever wanted to ask about the birth of the judicial system and the big man himself, Judge Dredd, but never dared to ask! This is...
JUDGE DREDD: ORIGINS
>>88846038And let's hope this goes better than my last Dredd storytime...
First off, a small prologue by John Wagner and Kev Walker.

>>88846364
>>88846038
But judge Anon, you are not my mom and i didnt ask for this.
>>88846391
>>88846387
Yep, there's a fair bit of Mignola in this era of Walker. You can also see it in Mandroid and Sin City.
>>88846416
Walker is currently drawing the Star Wars Doctor Aphra book, and before that he did the Elsa Bloodstone Secret Wars mini. And before THAT he did Thunderbolts. /co/mrades with good long-term memory might remember TWIST THE KNIFE.

Too late kid, now siddown!

>>88846416
also it remind me of Eduardo Risso too.
>>88846619
>>88846640
>>88846628
Man, I would love to see Risso draw Dredd. Hell, his Borderline with Trillo is already pretty Cursed Earth-y.

it might be interesting.

Kinda interested in what you yourself thought of this storyline Judge
>>88846956
Because here we go!
>>88847004
I love it. Love it to bits. There are a couple of art hiccups that don't sit well with me, since Ezquerra wasn't yet out of his early digital coloring phase, but the story is very compelling and interesting, and the last few pages are, in their own way, more devastating than anything that has ever happened to Dredd.
>>88847080
traditional Carlos Ezquerra coloring is best Ezquerra.
>>88847158
Siiigh... she's so perfect.
>>88847130
Oh yes, absolutely. Late 80s/Necropolis crazy neon acid fever dream Ezquerra is peak Ezquerra to me. Golden standard. Light years away.
>>88847196
Feel free to start with the Metal Gear Solid jokes, folks.
>>88847196
also he draws an interesting Anderson.

>>88847334
Dem lips.
>>88847846
Well, now we know where the chin comes from.
>>88847981
Keep a close eye on the judges' uniforms through this story.
this coloring by Ezquerra was made after or before The Pit?
>>88848425
Here we go.
Here come the worms.
>>88848468
>>88848464
Almost ten years after.
>>88848123
What ever happens to Logan? And other notable Dreddfriends? I only read in trades so I miss out on the supporting characters fates normally. I read Chaos Day and Trifecta.
Like, I think Renga and Guthrie are dead?
>>88848562
>>88848558
Logan had a nasty run in with Judge Mortis, but I'm pretty sure he's still alive. Guthrie and Renga I'm not sure, but I do know Garcia died off-panel.
>>88848623
And speaking of death...
>>88848498
huh, he got a lot better.
>>88848623
Too bad about Eustace. Couldn't handle a slip-up, and the one he made was fairly blatant. Didn't have the benefit of the Academy. Judge Beany, or whatever Americas kid was named will turn out well, probably, but with more quips than necessary.
>>88848695
>>88848687
Definitely. There are still a few shortcuts in this story here and there, especially on backgrounds, but it's still a looot better than those days.
>>88848623
A quick look at wiki says Castillo is dead, Logan is still in medical with some weird Sisters of Death plot, Renga's alive but Stark is dead (got them confused), and Guthrie is an iso block warden.
>>88848958
Behold! Baby Dredd and Rico!
>>88848983
>>88848962
Poor Castillo. Died in Lawcon, didn't she?

I think the thing I like best about this story are the continuity patches. Stuff like Goodman and Solomon both being Chief Judge, stuff like that. Dredd (or Wagner's) attitude to continuity porn is commendable.
>>88849223
>>88849205
Definitely. The one thing that's kinda missing from this is the police and the judges still co-existing together up until 2099, but that had already been silently shushed out of continuity a while back.
>>88849642
This page.
This page is fucking GOLD considering everything that came afterwards.

>>88850188
>>88850216
>>88850239
Judge Dred storytimes sure are always long. I guess cause there's so damn much of it
I love that the comics stay relevant despite being fairly old, sometimes. Overreaching government is never an irrelevant topic.
Where does MegOne get its food, fuel and raw materials anyways? From the Cursed Earth?
>>88850264
>>88850287
>>88850281
Some comes from produce farms on the Cursed Earth, some from colonies up in space, some from trade with other Mega Cities, and some from Resyk.
Good ol' Resyk. They use everything but the soul!

Judge Fargo had... a hard life.
>>88851264
And Dredd's just got a hell of a lot harder.
Many thanks Judge Anon :)
>>88851296
That's the end of Origins, although its effects are still felt today. Fargo's last words hit Dredd hard, and he's been working towards changing things for the better in the city ever since. But as they say, the best way to make enemies is to try to change something. And Dredd is nothing if not good at making enemies. For more on this, read Tour of Duty: The Backlash and Mega City Justice.
>>88851296
Do you think Judge Dredd (the comic and the character) might finally end one day? Would it be with no more judges, or just without Dredd
>>88851376
Maybe Dredd will die one day and another judge will carry on his legacy.
You know like the flash.
>>88851376
I think it'd be perfectly possible for Dredd as a character to die. The strip has enough strong characters that it could easily become an ensemble cast thing, and even if not, there's always Rico II ready to take the name. That said, Rebellion and 2000 AD have made it very clear this last year that they are not planning to kill their flagship character any time soon, although John Wagner did propose doing an alternate What If/Dark Knight Returns kind of story about Dredd finally buying the farm.
Anyway, that's it from me tonight. Here's to 2017, /co/mrades. Let's all try our best to be better and make it better than yesterday.
>>88851428
I want a good Dredd vidya. Maybe something turnbased, like Shadowrun Returns

>>88850686
He looks suspiciously like Trump here, though I think he's based on Nixon mixed with Reagan.
Yay!
>>88846067
What happened last time?
>>88851241
Chronologically speaking did this happen before or after the "America" (the person) arcs?
They probably take on an entirely new context for Dredd after this.
Thanks for the story time!
So what happened to the other three clone children?
>>88851685
Same here with the catalog. /co/ is a shame, except for the Dredd threads.
Thanks Judge anon.
>>88851347
What happened to the other 4 clones besides Dredd and Rico?
Maybe someone in here knows. There's another comic that kinda apes on Dredd about a cop who hunts down superheroes, except he's in like a leatherdaddy gimp suit. And it has a punny name like Corporal Punishment or some shit but I cannot find it and it's driving me apeshit.
>>88856023
They've rarely been mentioned, I know there was an earlier story that mentioned other clones of Fargo where we saw their faces, but that's probably non-canon or retconned to Hell given it had very little bearing on the rest of the metaplot.

Has great coop
>>88853320
It is weird how Booth keeps coming around to being relevant again. I guess corrupt self-aggrandising politicians never go out of style.
>>88856113
Marshall Law?
>>88856267
>>88856842
Yessssss
>>88853320
>He looks suspiciously like Trump here, though I think he's based on Nixon mixed with Reagan.
Earlier an anon asked "who would vote for this guy?"
Trumpfags.
In a heartbeat.
>>88857235
He's even got Trump's "they're not pulling their own weight" rhetoric. Wagner was a (partial, hopefully) prophet.
>>88854037
After the first two, and happened around the same time as "Cadet."
>>88856023
According to the commissioner of that pic, those other four clones are Rico 2, Kraken, Dolman and... I actually can't recall who the fourth one is. Anyway, Rico 2 is alive and well, Kraken is dead and buried, and Dolman left the Dept. to pursue a very healthy career in space cadetry.
>>88857314
>>88857235
Also of note: the whole bit about how all the other countries in the world are laughing at America and taking advantage of America and "WE'LL SHOW THEM THEY CAN'T PUSH US AROUND ANY MORE!". If anything, it shows just how basic (and, sadly, effective) demaguoges are.
>>88857314
While it might look prophetic, these sort of things happen enough for everyone to see that it's going to happen and in many cases are inspired by the writers actually witnessing it IRL. The techniques are old. It's figuring out when everyone is gonna fall for it that's the thing.
The problem is
>>88847877
oh man, Fargo's old enough to post on 4chan a week from Thursday
>>88850029
Nah, that song is forever associated with Fallout for me.
>>88847222
>Feel free to start with the Metal Gear Solid jokes, folks.
well, Solid Snake & Dredd do have some similarities in their backstories, but I'm not sure if that's what you're getting at
>>88848687
yeah, I enjoyed the Pit as a story, but the colouring was terrible
>>88848425
I could be wrong, but I think the varying dates have something to do with an old continuity snafu. It's kinda neat the way they managed to implement it in a story pretty neatly
>>88848468
I seem to recall reading a story years ago where Dredd was investigating the possibility that he might have a biological mother(it turned out to be false). I wonder if Sequenta Tells was the woman that he thought might be it

how come you taste so good
>>88848531
Sanchez was in one of the Dred/Alien stories, right?
>>88858961
How the entire plot of this story revolves around the body of Judge Fargo, the legendary lawman who had two clones, one who went bad and one who became a hero. And then it turns out the body is not a body...
>>88859390
I checked and no, that was another woman who turned out to be Fargo's sister, IIRC.
>>88859586
Think it was another woman with a similar name.
>>88856477
Yeah originally Booth was based on Nixon. When this story was published afaik Wagner explicitly compared him to Bush Jnr. Now reading it he's so Trump like that it's not funny at all and pretty terrifying.
>>88849516
I like that for all his general shittiness, Booth still had to be talked into rigging the election and had some reservations.
>>88860775
yeah the page with the Judge facepalming at the news of the bombs dropping made me nervously laugh
>>88850686
I have to admit, I like the way the robots speak, and not just the way their sentences carry over. The deadpan, polite speak's pretty funny
>>88848338

I should not be laughing as hard at this as I am.

Don't worry man. No matter how bad a President might potentially be, the vigilance of the American people will always avert catastrophe and protect their democracykek
>>88848687
>>88859267
The Pit was the first big story Ezquerra did after switching to digital art.
I think towards the end he was either experimenting or just pressed for time, because he'd already done stories with digital color before then that had turned out pretty damn nice.
>>88862294
Yeah, it's a good one.

>>88862760
You don't need a face when you wear the helmet of justice.
You know I can't think of much else like Dredd really, in that it's a fascist dystopia where the MC is an agent of the fascist dystopia's government but is nonetheless sympathetic and even often good - and independently of the kind of "now he has a crisis of faith and turns" narrative you usually get there. And that doesn't mean the dystopia is glamorized - it never is - but nor is it torn down or made the focal point of the comic. We're just asked to accept it and the comic is about the forces at work within it. Even just daily life within it.
I remember one (I think euro) comic about a woman in a society where people have pretty much given up on democracy, and she is a detective but also the focus of a 24/7 reality show so most of her life is artificial. I guess that had some similarities.
>>88862914

Sounds freaky. C'mon, give us a name.

I can't remember the name.

I mean just going back andillegally reading it on a porn site g.e-hentai.org/g/488685/0724f25bcb/the first couple of pages have a couple in a car getting off as they kill themselves by driving into a wall specifically built on the freeway for people to commit suicide with. I'll be looking in my trove, and will post it in the next Dredd thread. I'll probably find one or two eurocomics to boot, they make some nice cyberpunk series.
Off the top of my head, maybe Perkeros or Tokyo A.D. Police.
So Fargo pushed for instant judgement because gangs took over America, right? Where the hell did they come from?

The 80's.
