Hickman is more of a nostalgia based writer than anything. It isn't so much that the relationships make sense within the context of the story, but rather how these characters make you feel based off of some sort of shared past experience readers have had with them.

Tony vs Steve is something that has loomed over the two characters for the last two decades, and the fact that the conflict never really felt real was not something that was going to stop Hickman from pegging it in there due to the massive familiarity of that conflict with readers.

Hickman's one of few writers who can plan more than two issues into the future. The Rogue Planet/Sol's Anvil/Thorr's Hammer/Builder Ship/Alternate Hulk would have been left as loose plot points by anyone else.

If he could sort his pacing out and learn how to write a finale he'd be one of the best writers in the business.

Many theorized that the multiverse that the gentry destroyed in multiversity was marvel, since multiversity #2 came out the same day the marvel multiverse ended. But the empty hand is supposed to be some sort of embodiment of the reader o in a way he's cannonically connected to Hickman's run.
