I think Tom's just trying something different for the profiles. Good on him, that is probably one the things that he is weakest at drawing (or at least never seems to get quite working with the rest of the art-style). I'm not sure if it worked out too well here but it's good that he's pushing himself in that regard.

My prediction on Friday was that with Smitty gravely injured and the Jeanne situation made worse, the gang make a retreat and blip out of there.

They'd have to face consequences trying to explain what happened to Smitty and Kat's brainjacking Annie. Meanwhile they have the arrow to examine to figure out what when wrong. Keeps the ball rolling.

Those are pretty limited consequences since it's Coyote that really maintains the barrier by dint of not wanting anyone to cross the divide, and I can't see how seeing Kat as a machine Goddess is going to have much bearing on her relationship with Annie - I mean, I'm pretty sure they must've figured something is up with her from the whole RotD/boat/intense biomechanical skill thing.
Plus ether shit looks weird to begin with, it's not too far down the crazy path.

Talking of the boat, I just reread the chapter to see if Annie saw her ether form there (she didn't, only Paz did) and I'd forgotten how much stuff was going on in that chapter:

I read GC a few years ago, and when I caught up it was the first couple pages of that chapter where Smitty met all the forest animals as the new medium. I didn't check the comic again until last week, when I read through it all from beginning to now.

Keeping up with a comic like this on a serial basis must really suck. It's such a good read from beginning to end, or chapter by chapter, but I can't imagine keeping up with updates every week and still being invested. I'd either be in threads like this and eventually get burnt out, or give up reading and leave a bad taste in my mouth. I think comics like this are best read in archive format. It is very fun that way.

Yeah. There will always be a different experience between serial and archive, and both have their high and low points. I think at the core, it's more about how the comic is presented. Something like homestuck was entertaining to follow serially all the time, because updates were dense, frequent, and unpredictable in timing and nature. Gunnerkrigg pages are like that of a traditional comic, and while each page is interesting it is not something that has a particular benefit from the format it uses (webcomic), though it certainly wouldn't have survived otherwise.

I think it'd be really cool if he updated with the same amount of pages, but only once a week. People probably wouldn't mind after a bit and every update would be substantive, with more pages. But it also seems to work fine as it is so whatevs. I'm probably going to follow serially until this chapter is over then reread it all in 2019 or so
