In the first issue of ANAD he took his helmet off without the suit disappearing, sure, but at the time I think we all assumed that was Waid not caring about how Sam's powers worked and I don't recall any book saying that he learned to do that.

That was Pakistan. Pakistan isn't the middle east. It's just south-east asia.

But more to the point, the lesson she learned from meeting him was "don't go into another person's country and think you know what's best because it's always more complicated than you'd think as an outsider." She was literally told "don't go into a foreign country and start superheroing without checking in with locals. Although to be fair, they did check in with the leader of that women's group and followed her lead on it.
