I disagree. Pretty much the entire first half of Flash Venom revolves around the symbiote having this huge rap sheet.It's done some damn horrible things. Flash thinks its an absolute monster which he justifies using because it lets him be Spider-Man. Flash absolutely wants the sybmiote to remain drugged beyond coherent thought because it did so much to hurt Spider-Man. The symbiote wants to corrupt Flash first to escape from the drugs and second to turn him into a more pliable host so it can go back to hurting Spider-Man.
and then, at the apex of their toxic codependency, they start to genuinely look out for each other. because not only did the stars align but so did the desire in Flash to be a hero with the tiny sliver still in the symbiote to protect the innocent.

I'm romantisizing a little, but while you could still do 'a' Agent Venom story with a different symbiote, it would not be the same story. Carnage has never wanted to help people (Axis notwithstanding), Toxin doesn't have the rap sheet, and not any other existing symbiote nor any OC would fit that same way either because the history just wouldn't be there and ham fistededly forcing such a history into the gaps of continuity would fall flat

As for the new design, I always took it as a fusion of all Flash was: a Spider-Man fanboy hence the mask and spider, and a soldier hence the tacticool armor. Also, when the armor has those spikes and buff shoulderpads, it kinda gives me a small impression of a Football player, like it's made for a lethal charge at full speed.

Yeah, Venom was perfect symbiosis while Carnage was downright fusion.

On the other end, Toxin was the most independant symbiote, with simply no interest to mentally bond with his first host, therefore being unaware of what went in his mind. Of course then the Blackheart incident happened and he ended bonding with Eddie, and I guess the revenge issues in both of them put them in synch and they bonded to Venom levels without realizing it, like a begrudging pair of allies who want to kill eachother but end up hatefucking instead.

Venom was actually at his best before his first official story.

He had so much promise in those little cameos leading into his debut. When he was a hand pushing Peter in front of a train, or cutting his webbing whilst unseen, or haunting MJ.

Venom as a character was legit scary. He was faster than Pete, stronger with tougher webbing, he could camouflage into whatever clothes he wants, he could go undetected by Spider-sense and he knew EVERYTHING about Parker's life. He was the ultimate in nightmare stalkers and could be the biggest personal threat to Pete.

Sadly they threw all that out the window in his second ever appearance and he's had only a handful of decent stories since. Carnage has completely overshadowed him. Cletus has so many worthwhile stories by comparison.

Flash was pretty stupid, it limited the creative potential for venom, but I'd say it was entertaining to see him use it the way he did.
