This is honestly the best bit of animated entertainment I've seen all year, and I literally caught this on the last day of 2016. Beautifully crafted, fun animation, building real drama without big set pieces, relying not on gimmicks or pop songs but telling the story respectfully, this puts multi-million dollar movies to shame.

Go watch this if you're a British person.

the composition and color grading is nice, but the character designs and animation are ehhhhhhh
>>
>>88810159
Really? I thought they lend to the whole "storybook charm" the movie had going and their movements were fairly fluid.
>>
>>88810159

The designs were a nod to plasticine models with a model touch. Note the hair in particular in >>88809862

I thought the designs were very charming, but more importantly the animation was superb. They did a fine job of communicating intent and acting.
>>
>>88810242
maybe wood
>>
>>88810242
One thing I noticed was that while the characters in the 'story' sections had sculpted hair, the characters in the 'real world' framing device had fully rendered hair (and fur).

The character designs appear to be strongly influenced by Quentin Blake's illustrations, particularly the Wicked Stepmother when seen in profile.

>>88812566
Yes.
>>
>>88812548

Very well-crafted CGI made to look like stop motion. (As opposed to Kubo, which was very well crafted stop motion made to look like CGI.)
>>
>>88812164

They do evoke his designs somewhat, but not the flourishes, which would have been difficult to translate to 3D anyway. I really do like what they've done here, though. Where others may see simplicity, I see elegance and directness, and they nailed the body language.

Looking through the credits, I was surprised by how small the team was. It's quite an achievement.

>>
On a side note, did anyone watch Ethel and Ernest?

>>
>>88816976

I was very impressed with how the stories were weaved together, and the climax that was powerful, dramatic, and kept the spirit of the other 5 stories. I gladly take this over Goldilocks, which was just a straight up retelling.

On the other hand, if this had been a full length movie with 20 more minutes for them to play around with, I think they would have been able to write in Goldilocks.

As far as Roald Dahl adaptations are concerned, this is near or at the top alongside Fantastic Mr. Fox for me. It does something rare for adaptations. It added more without taking much away, and was respectful of the spirit of the original.

Roald Dahl teached us that adults are not only the bane of existence itself but also the the enemy we to defeat, he's like the British version of Yoshiyuki Tomino.

>The concept of revenge, while indicating the inability to escape judgement, similar of the original fairy tales which would have alluded to the inevitable judgement of god, demonstrates a more humanist approach. The characters, excluding the straw and stick house pigs, receive what they deserve, not from acts of fate, but from others seeking repayment for what had been done to them, such as when Rolf is killed by Red for eating her grandmother, or Rex for eating the pigs and in turn when Red's children are eaten by the wolf as revenge for her slaying of his. What too sets the judgement of god in the original tales apart from that of 'Revolting Rhymes' is the ability for the characters to get away with their own crimes. Normally, revenge in itself would be a sin, and that isn't counting the various disturbing methods the characters use to perform the deed. Protagonists of the revenge tragedies of the Mediaeval era would have no other choice but to die for vengeance, reflective of the ideaology of ones fate being controlled solely by God. This eventually changed with the rise of the Age of Discovery leading to the Renaissance, which saw greater power handed to the people to control their own fate. These humanists values are reflected in the wolf's quote "Gambling is not a sin, provided that you always win." The fairy tale reinterpretation, rather than express morals, demonstrates the ability to accomplish things using reason over divine intervention, and shows that the eye of God is not as all seeing as the original tales would have made the responder to believe.

Though he does make sure to stick around long enough to let her know that he could have killed them if he wanted to.
>>
>>88837516
While the Wolves were wild animals, the Pig was clearly a citizen of the kingdom. He was certainly civilised enough for him to believe that he actually had a shot with the human Red (before she noticed her piggy bank and had a shot herself)
>>
>>88841556

You are taking Red's action very literally, yet ignoring where they occurred - the world of fairy tales governed by inhumane princes, strength and savagery, magic and superstition. It's lawless and cruel.

The city was a place of humanity, law, and rationality. Red no longer carried her gun. She left the fairy tale, and this is why the wolf didn't take revenge. He accepted that sort of thing had no place in the modern world.
>>
>>88839310
Look mate, I'd rather just fuck Red,
She's the one I'd want in bed
(Frankly though, between you and me,
I think Ms. Goat is out of my league.)
>>
>>88842679
Now I know that she was rather mean,
But I for one would do the Queen.
While her personality was the shits
I just can't deny those rocking tits.
>>
I absolutely loved the books when I was a kid, and really enjoyed the adaptation.

unrelated but I watched Ethel and Ernest on iplayer yesterday and liked it just that little bit more
>>
God damn this was charming as hell. I loved all of it, the art style, animation, the storytelling, voice acting, it was all so pleasant and charming and sweet. Red and Snow were adorable as hell and this is the first time I've really shipped something, wolf was great and I love how he ended up being a total softie.

I really did like the first part more than the second just because I think the fairy tale parts were more interesting, but the second part had the cute kids to make up for it.

Really nice stuff, an hour absolutely well spent. Thanks for bringing this to my attention thread.
>>
>>88843779
Remember that Wolf /did/ tell his nephews to stay away from people in the first place.
>>
It was a nice touch for the Wolf to show Red happy endings may not always stay happy, and they may be ended unhappily without your approval.
>>
>>88845522

I wonder why they chose to make them his nephews rather than sons.
>>
>>88847162
I think having it be the nephews adds in an extra set of responsibilities that makes the impact much worse. It's one thing to lose your own children, but having to take care of your brother's/sister's children and having them die on you adds an extra punch to it. Or atleast that's how I see it.

Charlatans, dunces, nerds and plebes
I expect no less from you dweebs
To lose your noggins at big knockers
And ignore that butter atop her shoulders

Picking a manfaced tranny queen
rather than the petite teen
I shake my head, go back to /thicc/
This is /thinn/, you tasteless prick

Take your lousy whales and witches
Purity is wasted on you bitches
Take the murdering psycho Red
She's a dyke, she won't let you bed

Give me Cindy, give me gaunt
with my tongue, I'd please her cunt
Great men seek not hulking size
We're satisfied with mosquito bites
>>
>>88812164
>Paersonally, I preferred the first one to the second.
Same
The second one was still good but the first one was so excellent in how everything wound up coming full circle. Also, the character development that Red went through in 30 minutes was genuinely impressive.

My my, what clever ego
It's amusing to see what you think you know
It's a pity, and even a fright
that your sight is set on the smallest of titties

What you need is someone to aspire
To gain wisdom when things are dire
So go outside and play some golf
and have a swing, with the kind old wolf
>>
>>88854067

I laugh and scoff at your tepid mess
Your broken rhyme betrays your duress
A man who assess breasts by weight
Is not fit to pontificate

To bulbous udders I say no thanks
I'd rather a girl smooth like a plank
who's yet been ravaged by gravity
the advantage of being itty bitty

People of your predilection
Are still obsessed with mum's lactation
I say let go of that fatty teat
And learn to appreciate petite

In truth, I bear you no ill will
Nor big breasts, I love them still
But don't whine when the artists cater
To something against your preferred demeanor

Your protestation I won't mind
As long as you keep it civil and kind
There are no egos here, you chump
It's all in service to keep the thread bumped
>>
>>88854067
I do not wish to sound aloof
But Golf simply rhymes not with Wolf
>>
>>88855214

It isn't easy to rhyme with wolf
Unless you cosplay Lieutenant Worf
At a Japanese Star Trek convention
Where they're not peculiar about pronunciation
>>
>>88846368
I'll admit, I kind of preferred the "bad end" implication of the first episode
>>
I'm disappointed with you lot
choosing shit-tier waifu at this spot
seeking husbandos is far purer
the wolf like Adolf ist mein Führer!

I would cuddle him at day
and listen at night as he say
tales of murder on Red
as we did it in his bed
>>
>>88857344
I too liked Uncle Wolf. So much
His fluffy tail I wish to touch.
No fucking though, he is too pure.
Contain (You)r boners and endure.

>>88809654

What kind of animation is this, exactly?
>>
>>88860112
CG
>>
>>88857344

Canine lust, I'm not surprised
/co/'s furfaggotry, anyone can surmise
The only mystery, my dear fellow
Is if you're the type who spits or swallows

This much is true, the dude is cool
A gentle beast, he's not a tool
His handsome figure is quite striking
His rump is built for vigorous lovemaking

But don't go there, it's not so clear
If the wolf would prefer your derrier
He's much better off with the Red lady
They both have a penchant for offing piggies
>>
>>88853813

Bump for this. Thanks in advance, retal4.

Poetry? Don't be so ridiculous
This is nothing quite so pompous
Just a few limericks
rather than stones and sticks
Designed to irritate and amuse us

>building real drama without big set pieces
I notice this a lot about British/Irish films. Something terrible or heartbreaking happens but the world doesn't come to a complete standstill, it's acknowledged but it doesn't dominate everything else. It's a very reserved, sad but peaceful acceptance of the way life is.
>>
>>88809654
Holy crap this is amazing i just watched part 1 on YouTube and got chills when they said the quote Gambling is not a sin provided that you allways win oh and btw im no british
>>
>>88857245
That worked as well, but now Red can never be sure again when or if it all ends for her. Never again. The uncertainty for the rest of her life is far more tortuous than the actual event.
>>
>>88809654
I was hopeing the Wolf would eat the kids AM i a bad person?
>>
>>88866209
Dunno, I was rooting for him too.
The voice actor did a such great job.
>>
>>88866209
Probably but you're not alone. I loved the dark cycle of vengeance aspect but I equally liked that the Wolf was the true hero by breaking that cycle.
The characterisation of the Wolf and Red was so goddamn strong, it's really masterful character building.
>>
>>88864211

Thank you kindly.

This movie is surprisingly less hokey than the trailer made it out to be. My eyes even welled up a few times.

They should have made Red the aunt to the kids. It would better mirror the wolf's situation with his nephews and they could keep the White/Red relationship.

Or have the kids be adopted by Red and White if they're going to be hers.

Red opening her eyes to glance at Snow White is what puts it over the top for me. There's nothing platonic about that.

This is one of those threads where the source material is shit and some faggot keeps zombie bumping the thread in a vain attempt for porn, isn't it?
