family went to see it, i had nothing better to do. the voice acting was well done but the characters hold the idiot ball the entire film and i cringed real hard for most of it. koala was a huge unlikable douche the entire film who just straight up lied and didnt pay any of his workers in order to try and keep his failing business afloat, he steals water and electricity and just continues to lie and act like an asshole until things magically work out in his favor. seriously he was so unlikable that i wanted to leave for most of the film, nearly made it unwatchable. there was a bit of stuff that seemed cut out or oddly placed, subplots that got rushed, endings that didnt get fleshed out especially annoyed me. the music was dated already but i didnt mind that so much, the actual performances werent bad. Visually okay, the character designs were really repetitive and kind of bland though. Comedically... eh? The kiddos seemed to like it enough but there wasn't much humor in general, let alone for adults, id maybe catch some less obvious shit on a rewatch like with Zootopia but I would never want to rewatch this.
I give it a 3/10.

I have no hope for illumination, and will probably only see "Despicable Me 3" because Trey Parker will be play a character in that film...

Yet, I was more than pleasantly surprised with this movie. I genuinely enjoyed it.

If you break it down and analyze it, and take away that child like humour it sometimes pull (Which, surprisingly, only happened in very few occasions), its the story of a man in love with the theater and how far are you willing to go for your dreams.

All the characters loose something during the film, whether its respect, the love of their family, their reputation, or confidence. The arch that each characters goes through closes pleasantly in the end of the film, and the throwaway characters don't feel out of place.

The animation, although not sublime like "Moana", was pretty inventive. I loved how it didn't need to explain how that animal world worked, and instead just showed us the day to day life, leaving the audience to feel the gap. It feels as much of a large city, a true community, as "Zootopia" did.

The voice acting is enjoyable, and it hits the characters where it should. I loved specially Taron Egerton's role, and how the whole gang spoke with a London Accent (I think that's the one).

Is the music out of fashion? Yes, but I'll take comfortable pop hits before trap music or "All about the Bass".

This film deserves respect and a chance to be watched, and although I will say "Moana" is a much better film, this shows that within "Ilummination" there are still some people with soul.

It was a good movie. Illumination shit isn't really all that stellar but it they know how to make movies that will shut up kids while also entertaining adults (I hear less screaming/hyperactive children in their movies than I do in Disney or Dreamworks movies). I'd wish they improved, but so far they're just harmless. The only thing souless about their company is that motherfucking marketing division.

I didn't really saw the koala as unlikable, dude was just so deep into fucking denial. He didn't just try to scam everyone by keeping the chest, he went out of his way to get a loan for the prize. His breakdown after the theatre collapses feels genuine, because usually when an optimist breaks down they become miseable, irritable pieces of shit.

Really the major fault of the movie is coming after Zootopia, since furfags won't stop comparing this movie to that one.

Jesus I didn't know people's reactions to this movie were so fucking strong. Although it kinda seems like everyone that's hating on it didn't actually go see it... So. Yeah. Anyways I enjoyed it. It wasn't anything great but I'm hard pressed to call it bad. The only good plotline is the one about the gorilla kid and his dad but everything else doesn't feel too out of place save for a couple scenes. The koala is kinda unlikable but not in a douchey way but he's the guy that won't agree to the surrender vote when your team is super behind. The ending is okay and the little kids liked it as far as I could tell.

I think it would have worked better if, instead of lying to his staff, he was down to just volunteers.

Then have it so that he's pretty sure he actually can pay the prize money and maybe even catch up on the mortgage, but only if he sells out every seat in the place at sky-high prices.

Then, have the water tank thing only come apart because of rampant smashing by the mobster guys, instead of being a blatant safety hazard from the get-go.

I think with those three changes, he'd have been a lot less 'asshole' and a lot more 'taking risks but thinking he can make it pay off for everybody'.
