good show, funny and intelligent

All I remember are the edits of that phone call scene.
>>
>>88762766
it really got shat on
i just can't imagine what it would have done if it continued, because like, the movies it was making fun of were actually GOOD. it's just only now we realize they were steppingstones towards bad. reminds me of the radioactive man movie episode of the simpsons.. how'd they see it coming so clearly when that hadn't actually happened yet?
>>88764442
indubitably. nothing but a bad dream jay had. then he rolled over and cuddled alice, which startled her awake and caused her to cuss some delightful southern swear, before realizing what it is and patting him like the koala he is.
>>
>>88762737
its sadly more relevant today than it was when it was new

Because he was being a petty faggot who didn't want other people riding "his" coattails to success even when they'd been part of what made The Simpsons successful in the first place.

And personally if I had to choose between even golden age Simpsons and The Critic I'd still go with The Critic. So many memorable and hilarious moments in just that short run.

I'd be game for more. But only if they get the old writers back onboard.

I loved the Simpsons marathon threads. When A Star Is Burns played and Jay did an ACHEM, there was at least five posts in a row all repeating it.
>>
>>88766908

A reboot where Jay tried to become a successful youtuber or some shit like that after his show is cancelled or they get someone to replace him would be interesting. Especially the clash of old world views when it comes to criticizing modern cinema.

>>
>>88769290
I read this in Jay's voice.

The dumbest part is the crossover episode is fucking great and produced a ton of classic jokes and scenes in that episode alone. Man Getting Hit By Football, Rainier Wolfcastle's stand up, Barney's movie, Non-Union Mexican Equivalent, Boo-Urns and that's just off the top of my head.

there's nothing wrong with good solid action. we're getting better and better at that. The action itself has to enthrall your mind and pull it in, or you get bored. transformers is no different from, say, a jackie chan movie.
fast and the furious is gay because it's just fucking cars.
capeshit is hit and miss because most of the time they can't or don't try to make the action any good. hellboy is an example of one where they got everything ELSE right, but couldnt make the action work

I don't know. Duke's actor died a couple years ago, Doris' perished a long while ago, and god only knows if the voices of the parents are still alive.

And didn't the actress who played Marty retire or something.

The problem with the Critic is that the good jokes were too complex to ever retell properly.

>lol there's this action star whose sidekicks keep dying because it's a trope so he's paired up with a guy who instantly explodes and says "I guess that one's on me" and gets paired up with a dinosaur and siamese twins while Arnold is there complaining that he got paired up with a leprechaun who says "I'll be your lucky charm!" and then instantly explodes

Like if you want to get someone watching the Simpsons you just say

>Come on! Put it in H!
>>
>>88774892

Not really that complex, it was just a jab at how 80s/90s action flicks were going with really goofy concepts like "A hardnosed cop is partnered with a wise-cracking kid!" and so on.

Not to say some jokes weren't layered or creative, that Penguins can't fly was fucking genius.

>>
>>88768218
The internet shorts are of so low quality I can't take them as being canon to the show. It's obvious the reason Alice "broke up" with him is because they didn't want to bother putting another VA on the tab.

Honestly, you know who's the most irreplaceable other than Lovitz? Maurice Lamarche. They even got him for the web series. Had to. It's not the same without him.
Fuck if they could get Rob Paulsen as an older Marty they'd be fucking set. he could review movies featuring dudley moore and peter cook somehow back from the dead. maybe making fun of how star wars has straight up tried recreating dead actors.

In another universe The Critic is on it's 21st season
>>
>>88774696
Most of the cast is dead, and the concept is long irrelevant as movie critics are never on television anymore (and 2 of the biggest ones are already dead), so no one will ever understand it or relate to it.

The only thing I'd see is some crappy reboot with Jay Sherman fired from TV and using Youtube as his soapbox, and trying to be like all the cool internet famous Youtube reviewers, but then it would be a different show, and it would be creepy to think of some guy in his 60s trying a critique career on youtube, something usually done by people in their 20's and 30's with other random friends. Actually, now that I think about it, we should all collaborate on writing it, send it to FOX or something, and see what happens, just for shits and giggles.

they sabotaged the fuck out of their programming, especially this show. Fox was their apparent savior, but then they treated it like the whippingboy, gave it no budget, gave a bunch of notes (granted pretty good ones) that changed it in significant if subtle ways, then canceled it as unceremoniously as ABC did, this time holding onto the rights so nobody else could buy it

that said, nothing on ABC or CBS ever becomes big. nobody watches those channels.

right? it was downright prescient.
you cant really say any of it applied to Batman Forever either, since this episode was made long before that movie came out, and only aired 3 months after. plus BF wasn't that bad. there were clear batman comparisons (we don't want to mimic the campy old 60s radioactive man show!) but their criticisms didnt apply to the Burton films. Hell, if anything those films could have USED a massive overbudget set like the one with the acid. their gotham was fucking tiny.
And really there weren't any other big superhero films I can think of. Obviously they didn't really parody the old superman films at all, there was nothing pastiching the cheaper interim-period movies (supergirl, superman 3 and 4, etc)
the only explanation is they could see the future

ABC as well as NBC and CBS never really committed to anything long enough for it to build an audience for one thing; everybody was looking for the next Simpsons but nobody was willing to wait more than a season for a show to be that big of a hit.

What happened to the Simpsons, anyway? It used to be practically every other line was quotable and became pop culture, now it's just "LOOK IT'S CELEBRITY PERSON". Why?

That divorce line doesn't sound like a reference to a marriage of convenience but a real relationship that he screwed up.

as the actors demanded more and more money, they started hiring cheaper writers
plus there's the simple "game design college" principle. What used to be a finely-honed individualistic craft that you signed on as a contractor has now become a job that you go to school for and learn by rote how it's done. there are no famous writers anymore the way bill oakley, josh weinstein, and conan o'brien are.. there never will be again

Yeah. that last episode felt really forced and super femnazi, "all men are pigs!"

I'm not wearing any pants
I SPLIT my pants, and now i'm not WEARING pants.

the comedic timing on this show sometimes, holy shit. It could be amazing. and yet once in a while it could be crummy. For every time Jeremy Hawke had a golden line like
>Why so glum, me big-bummed chum?
he had weird instances where he could suddenly do impressions, just because his voice actor could, and just randomly decided to end a sentence with one.. even though he's supposed to be a parody of the stereotypical brainless bad actor with a pretty face
>>
>>88774752
What if they worked the voice actors' deaths into the plots, or at least reference it? How old was Duke supposed to be again? Could say he just had a freak heart attack or something.

It's really only kept on the air because of the merch sales.
>>
>>88784782
not really. did they actually audition real aussies? i mean why?
>>
>>88785024
i recall an almost tastelessly massive amount of merch when the show debuted, with barts in every shirt-color of the rainbow, and shirts with every one of their several slogans at the time, but.. I haven't seen any in over 20 years. where are you seeing simpsons merch?
>>
>>88785107
I see it at walmart, target, frys, walgreens, stores that only exist in malls, gamestop, and I think that is it, actually.
>>
>>88785107
I hear the merch still sells like crack down in central and sound america. But I just heard that though the grapevine so pinch of salt and all that.

>But it would probably suck. I just want more episodes.

You know as sad as it is to say Im happier with it being short. Let it go out with some dignity and retain a favorable if niche audience. The internet episodes did enough damage on their own with the Alice shit but they're easy to write off and ignore.

As much as I love early Simpsons it's almost impossible to see them in a vacuum these days

It's fucking depressing

all this 90s era shit. When I was watching the episode with Siskel&Ebert it was depressing as fuck because they provided the voices.

You really have to watch a lot of movies to understand a lot of the jokes from The Critic so it's not for everybody.
>>
>>88766908
sorry man but the only reason why BoJack happened is because the creator watched the critic and the duckman and wanted to created his better with "more drama". I honestly think if they did a revival series (again) people would think it's a bojack rip-off.

I've watched it like two years ago and I don't remember not that much or if anything.

I don't know if it's because I have a shit memory, or is it because most of the people here have re-watched it dozens of times? The only thing I remember was shit that I saw on youtube again later like orson wells. Fuck I try to remember even one episode from this show and I can't. But I tend to remember things that I like and the problem is I liked The Critic but fuuck I can't remember shit.
>>
>>88789365
I watched this in 2016, and I still got all the references. I think the show is timeless, they did really do a good job, my niece could recognize most of it.
>>88789398
I don't think any show could ever be considered a Bojack ripoff, it has an unique feeling of pathetic.
>>88789497
that happened to me when I binge watched eva.
>>
I didn't care for it. It was really disorienting to watch because it could never seem to decide whether it wanted to be a show with a subdued tone and more grounded humor or be as over-the-top, unrealistic, and silly as possible.
>>
>>88789522
I binged eva too and I remember a lot from the show

I guess I have a lot of problems remembering the shows that are not "connected" as in every episode is the new adventure. I've watched every episode of Futurama and apart from the most populars one (the sad ones, Jurassic Bark, bender and hermes etc) I don't remember shit, and there were like hundreds of episodes. I remember more the characters than the stories.
