Eragon is a bad fantasy novel.
Twilight is a bad romance novel.
Fifty Shades of Gray is a bad erotic novel.

Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner, Uglies, The Giver... There are plenty out there. The genre became more and more popular after HG and Divergent's movies, but obviously the films have begun to wear their welcome. Too bad your local B&N will be flooded with those titles for years, just like how they're STILL flooded with supernatural romance novels in the wake of Twilight.

True, but it did have a movie recently in the wake of Hunger Games and Divergent. You may not remember it because it was kind of a box office failure.

All I know is that it had my 3DPD waifu, Taylor Swift. She played The Giver's daughter, Rosemary. And then she died.

It would appear so:
>The film unit of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba and the British "Harry Potter" producer David Heyman announced Sunday that they will make a fantasy movie "Warriors" based on a book series about warring cats.

>The live action film with computer-generated cats is based on the British books for young adults about clans of wild cats, with themes including adventure, forbidden love and good versus evil. The series has a fan following in countries including China, and the film is intended for worldwide audiences.

Here's hoping it isn't shit. Here's further hoping they retain all the trademark violence from the series, like the part where one guy done gets his chest cut from the neck through to his stomach and dies nine times in a row due to his literal nine lives.

It's been like a decade since I read the book, but didn't he have memories of a young woman?
>>
>>88762166
That's because they more or less glossed over her for the sake of giving The Giver a backstory. It's the same in the movie, and you only see her in flashbacks. They used Taylor because they wanted to try and push tickets and fill theater seats, so they cast her and gave her billing and poster space for what more or less amounts to, like, ten minutes of screen time.

They probably only had the money to get her for, like, one or two days of filming.

My pick would be the Remnants book series. It went to some pretty wacky places but I think they'd look great as a comic or in animated form, especially when they awaken on Mother and find that their surroundings are based on various paintings that were digitally stored inside their capsule/shuttle.

Yeah, there was a short story where he goes to the Old World with her at the end. It's actually a cool story, read it if you can.
I kinda hated Nick for awhile, but they did a good job of showing that he really wasn't in his own mind. Him breaking free was cool.
Overall I just liked the world they crafted. Shit like the previous Abhorsens and Mogget being a Free Magic Entity, the creepy as zombies, the different layers of death. All of it was great. The character work was well done too, they did a good job of letting you explore the world with them as you slowly got to know who they were.

Shit, I remember that series. I thought Hester's character arc was really interesting. Also Shrike was cool. I should really finish the series, only read the first three books.
>>
>>88763509

The character work imo was the weakest aspect of the books - Sam is probably the strongest one of the bunch as far as pure characterization goes (understanding motivations, personalities, growth etc.). Many of the characters felt flat to me, and much of their growth and less to do with who they were as opposed to where Nix needed them to be (Sabriel in particular did not strike me as particularly emotive or deep).

The world is one of the best I've read in fantasy. I could read stories about the Old Kingdom for hours and be totally content. Would love to see how he adapts the Old Kingdom to match modern Ancelstierre w/o the addition of the technology in Ancelstierre. I'm sure having someone like Nick, who I'm sure would travel back and forth, as an advisor to Sam, would be able to bring back blueprints of technology for Sam to adapt and use w Charter Magic.

Also, Charter Magic. So fucking well thought out and cool.

Fuck yeah, Abhorsen
>>
>>88763552

Yeah but the build up felt completely organic and natural. There was no shocker moments, no sudden dive into madness.

very well constructed story
>>
>>88763509
Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case
Good story. Nick spends Lireal and Abhorsen basically in a trance, so it gives him some desperately needed redemption.

Apparently Nix is writing a sequel called Goldenhand. I didn't think Clariel was very good,so I'm hoping this one will be better...
>>

Three prequels, the first of which (Fever Crumb) was pretty good, and the second and third of which (A Web of Air and Scrivener's Moon) were great.

Fun story time

> the author was semi famous due to writing the first book while in highschool. He actually went to the rival highschool in my district. So some smart ass thought hey lets have this guy go around the schools and do a presentation.

I want to preface this next part that i have always been a geek and a nerd. One who can mostly function with other people but still...

> so people are having their english period high jacked and sent to the library to hear the dude talk. I had read the book along with nearly everything else in the library so was vaguely interested but was in regular english due to my preference of doing anything besides homework. So besides me this was probably the first visit to the library several of these dumb fucks had had that year.

>some lady, probably some pr person starts her pitch blah blah blah. Then small applause and in walks this kid. Think full old timey bard picture blindingly mismatched colored outfit up to and including a fucking giant ass quill in the cap. >I remember loving these books as a kid then later realizing it was basically a series of bad fanfic.

childhood is loving the plot
adulthood is realizing that the worldbuilding is the best

no joke the whole setting is awesome even now

very interested to see where the series goes after Paolini finishes his Sci-Fi book next year, once you clear out the stupid Star Wars plot, you could do anything with that setting

i was butthurt that he was lazy with the writing and threw out deus ex machina's everywhere in the last book, but i wasnt reading still at that point anyway

the level of detail in the battles was kickass, as was the one bit where he forges a sword (influenced by a book Paolini read on Japanese sword forging apparently), that and the languages, the politics, religious arguments, was why it was all worthwhile

i wasnt even mad at the unresolved plot threads

didnt seem to be needed to be adressed really, galbatorix was always just a sideshow for me if that makes sense, like an excuse plot

for me the books were about Eragon finding a way, a path, i skipped through all of the murtagh 1v1 vs Eragon for example

Elva and Roran are the kinds of things that made it interesting

consider it the 4th out of 5 or more books, and not the last of a series, and it sits easier in your mind

literally ignore Galbatorix and nothing of value was lost

ok but so is almost everything else in this thread

if you were butthurt at writers using elves, heroes journey plots, and magic then you'd have a list from here to Mars

harder than you'd think to extrapolate what made the Inheritance/Eragon series more derivative than its contemporaries, than any other fantasy series

still, the criticism is valid, hopefully he improves in his subsequent writings
>>
>>88765288
Here's the thing though, a generic setting can be saved by a few original additions and good writing. The Inheritance books didn't bother doing that.
>>

1. i like maps and used to draw them like the one in the book
2. i grew up out in an isolated community of 10,000 people much like Paolini, so i appreciate more than most cityfolk would all the many descriptions about the scenery, the mountains, the wildlife (people forget he had encounters with all sorts of interesting creatures like the sea serpents, the shadow owls, etc)
3. details for each city as they were under attack was fantastic

search your feelings, you know it to be true...

Could anyone figure out the triology i read as a kid?

>all the names were something like a wizards might or a hero's courage (google , of course does jack shit to help the search)
>order of the books titular heroes is warrior > wizard > hero
>the mother of the MC in the third book(i think, might have been the second one) has been in something like the everfall for fucking ever as some sort of punishment, then dies at the beginning of the book.
>third book ends with the hero dying by getting roasted until only a lump of coal remained by the beast he was prophecied to fight.

How is there lingering radiation from an annihilation? There'd be a gamma burst and then not much else... even if he split all the atoms in his body (minor nuke then) the result wouldn't have long term radiation.

Unless elves are made up of heavy elements.

I just hate it when authors try to sell their book on having "rich lore" and "worldbuilding" (he effectively tried to put a dictionary for the ancient language together) but then have to rely on a 4th grade understanding of the concepts they introduce.

This is kind of a shot in the dark, but there used to be this website that basically summarized the books but added in exactly what the story was currently ripping off at the time, but I've completely forgotten what it is and can't seem to find it.

There were lines that went something like:

"So magic is based on Words of Power, but it's not quite like Lord of the Rings, Aragorn- I mean Eragon. It's more like..."
"Oh, you mean like in Ursula Le Guin's The Wizard of Earthsea?"
"That, but the words themselves are ripped from the Belgariad."

Did anyone else run into it at some point? I've been searching for a long time with no luck

Even if most of the series was a derivative mess, there were a few interesting concepts hidden underneath all that shit. Too bad the author was too young/stupid to capitalize on them.

>ra'zac evolved to hunt and eat humans in the early stages of life
>get genocided by the hippie elves despite being fully sentient
>later on the MC finds some babies and kills them
>are we going to question the morality of such acts?
>nah, let's just write the entire race like saturday morning cartoon villains, that'll justify it

Even as a child I knew that was horseshit.

Also there is a full length cartoon movie. Not about the 13 1/2 lives but a different story about a person who thinks of himself as Blaubärs nemisis.

Though you might have a hard time getting all those puns that are german only

I'm excited for the upcoming Netflix series, but I always wanted an animated adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I always imagined it with Edward Gorey-esque animations. Though so much of the humor and strength of the books is in the writing, I don't know how it will adapt.

Also John Bellairs' books. Loved that shit as a kid. House with a Clock in its Walls was GOAT.

Read to the second one and loved them. Then they announced they'd make a movie and I immediately dropped the franchise.
What happened was, that my 15 year old self read the story and self-inserted into the role like a motherfucker. As soon as I realized that others were also reading these books and as soon as they cast some random actor as the actual guy I got really, really fucking embarassed by reading something so mastubatory and stopped immediately.

To everyone saying that and variations of ITT, that's not exactly true. It was self-published at first, and his family aggressively went around the country promoting (which is also where Paolini appeared in the costume another anon mentioned happened). It was then discovered by an actual publisher who made it more widely available and popularity exploded from there. Though Knopf did play up the "He wrote it at 16!" angle for extra publicity.
I always imagined his parents to be those hyper pressure types. I think he was homeschooled, and they own the self-publishing company. No idea what they're actually like though.
