I did a couple of studies of the old PA art style around a year ago, and, even if the studies themselves weren't very good, I realize why Mike began changing it up.

Take a look at >>88760149. Although it's not at Ctrl-Alt-Del level of same face, a lot of old PA stuff was just the same three quarters view, or sometimes from the back or the front. The style itself wasn't very dynamic, or fluid. Mike clearly wanted to change that. He went into it trying to make his style more dynamic and he succeeded on that front. He just sacrificed everything else.

Video games stopped being a cool niche thing and they didn't quite know how to deal. It eventually became more about the Penny Arcade Experience as they focused more on PAX, as well as launching and sponsoring various online media projects.
