Let's be honest, these aren't even that abnormal ratings. Nothing ever seems to do well in Adult Swim's first hour on Saturday. Kai, KoTH, One Piece, Sit Down Shut Up, Home Movies, Aqua Teen, The Oblongs, etc. etc. all did poorly.

Anything that people have to pay attention to seems to not do well. GitS, Parasyte, and even Dimension W. Mediocre as it was, I saw people even in these threads complaining they had no idea what was going on, even though the plot was pretty straight forward. It made me realize that even as people make fun of battle shounens like One Piece and Naruto for constantly flashing back to stuff that happened 5 minutes ago and reusing the same scenes in 3 or 4 episodes, it seems some people legitimately can't follow a story unless their hands are held like this.

It's not stereotypical given that the joke is "this is actually Hell."

It actually makes sense. If Hell is where all the most evil people are, then presenting them with a really evil place isn't going to bother them. So instead they stick Freiza in what is basically Ponyville and make him watch everyone frolic for all eternity.

(And DB's version of the afterlife seems to imply that ONLY incredibly evil beings go to hell, so it fits.)

I'm curious to see how the ratings go for Unicorn. Despite what the meme kids would have you believe, IBO got decent ratings, but Unicorn is pretty different, and there's a TON of exposition in the first two episodes before things really get moving, which could turn people off.

On the other hand, it's pure eye candy. It's got easily the best animation of anything Toonami has EVER aired that wasn't a movie (and it beats a few of the movies, too.) That alone might be enough to keep people watching, even if they don't care about the story, which is tonally a lot like Gundam Wing (lots of teen angst, philosophy, and big speeches, while shit explodes everywhere.)
