why is mickey such an under-developed character? compared to goofy or donald we barely know anything about him.
>>
>>88730806
Since Mickey is Disneys mascot they decide to play it safe, since he is the image of the company after all
>>
>>88730806
There's plenty about Mickey, you just haven't done enough research.
>>
>>88730883
if by "There's plenty about Mickey, you just haven't done enough research." you mean the italian/spanish/brazilian comics they are not canon.
>>
in italian comics he's charaterized as a detective, and has many adventures with goofy in crime/noir stories, time travel/indiana jones like adventures and fantasy/sci-fi environments.
>>
>>88730950

Definitely a Thing that Exists when talking about Mickey
>>

He's pretty cool in the new mickey shorts

>italian comics
that's the keyword here
>>
>>88730950
Since when are officially licensed comics not 'canon'? And the first comics were both American and written by Disney himself. Doesn't get much more canon than that.

Maybe it's like how Mario is a referee, kart racer, gymnast, villain, etc. depending on the game.

>in another a james bond agent
These two actually did a crossover so they're in the same canon. You could probably make a continuity between all those versions you listed work.

Disney is a multiverse, kind of like kingdom hearts, there's noting oficial about the characters other than the designs.
>>
Walt and the staff used Mickey as a stand in for themselves.

So while early Mickey cartoons were full of energy and aventure, eventually it became about inane shit like Mickey needing to rake ALL THESE LEAVES.
>>
>>88732128
Wait seriously? I kinda want to read that. Do you have a scan of the crossover or do you know which issue it was so I can "buy" it? Might even do a storytime as well if the comic is good.

>why is mickey such an under-developed character? compared to goofy or donald we barely know anything about him.

After he became popular, Disney got complaints any time Mickey did anything remotely mischievous. They could get away with Donald being a massive jerk and Goofy doing dangerous stunts so they switched over focus to them instead.

Mickey was just a straight man for those two and Pluto; he held that role for so long that Disney wasn't willing to let anybody do anything with him. Not even to reinvent Mickey like they did Donald and Goofy.

Of course, now that nobody cares about Mickey anymore, they're willing to actually do stuff with him now like the new shorts.

You just haven't watched enough Mickey Mouse shorts/cartoons. He has a lot more personality, especially in the really old shorts.

There is no solid canon in the Mickey Mouse universe.
>>
>>88731173

I think the only thing that would be considered canon is that Donald Duck works for the navy.
>>
>>88737019

No he works as a coin shiner for Scrooge at 10 cents an hour, or alternatively at the margarine factory.
>>
>>88737373
Not really. It's mostly an American thing, and American Donald comics are a drop in the ocean compared to even just the Italians.
>>

I hate what they turned Pete into after Goof Troop. He's such a pussy, now. He used to want to be a pot farmer.
>>
>>88739780
It's fault of dat hoe Peggy. She stole Pete's MOJO.

He's much better with Trudy, breaking the law together and not getting married.
>>

>>88740097

I liked how the two Goofy Movies acted as a stealth restoration of Pete's character.

Peggy left him and took Pistol with her. PJ grew up and went to college.

Now Pete's single and unchained and free to be a crook again.

"Duckverse" comics are not canon to the main Disney source, only minor elements have been brought over

I wonder whether Disney will remember to give him a 100 year anniversary celebration in 2025?

Pete's older than even Oswald.
>>
>>88730806
He's like Super Mario a mascot character
>>
>>88737106
Not really. Even back then he was a smiling bouncing cipher. His personality would change from short to short to suit the situation, if they bothered to give him one at all.

Most classic Disney characters (from shorts and features produced by Walt) had one defining trait, such as Donald who is simply 'temperamental' or Goofy who is named after his trait. Or any of the seven dwarves.

Then there were characters who had no discernible characteristics at all.
>Mickey
>Minnie
>Daisy
>Pluto
>Snow White

Warner Bros always excelled at personality over Disney. Which is why their shorts are way more fun to watch than Disney but also why they aren't as successful today.

The personality of the characters was so much a part of the voice artist, the animators and story men that it's hard to make new vehicles for them today.

Whereas Mickey and his friends are all so simple anyone can write them.

Not to mention Mickey being a blank slate makes him the perfect mascot. He doesn't need to say anything, his ears alone will sell millions of caps, mugs, coasters and shirts.
>>
>>88744846
Disney's lawyers will celebrate by greasing senators to extend Mickeys copyright for another 50 years, meaning Mickey and his friends as well as every other major franchise created as far back as the 60s will remain out of the public domain for another generation.
>>
>>88730806
Super optimistic and caring without letting people walk on him. He's made a good protag for the more serious comic stories.

The thing is even in the european comics they play him way too safe and always in the same roles of action detective style hero. Beyond perfect unlike Donald who is extremely flawed.
>>
>>88730806
>That time when Mickey forced a kiss out of Minnie
>That time when Mickey used animals as musical instruments
>That time when Mickey got cucked by Pete, since Mickey sucked at dancing
Times have changed...
>>
>>88731262
I always liked how Barks wrote Donald as a kind of everyman. He's down on his luck, his family and girlfriend treat him with a lack of respect, and though he has potential, his personality keeps him from ever using it to really improve his situation. He's not really a goofy character, he's just a flawed person who keeps getting stuck in weird situations.
>>
>>88746424
Comic Mickey's main flaw is that he's got no planning skills. Because he's so optimistic, he jumps head first into everything, which is why he gets into so much trouble. In the better stories this means he creates most of his own problems.
>>
>>88730950
>canon
Why do Americans obsess so much with what is canon and what not? You have comics were Donald is a superhero, a secret agent working together with Fethry, sometimes he ends up in jail, sometimes he's in the 1950s, other times in the modern times and other times he's fighting aliens from Mars and yet no one in Europe ever complains about that.
>>
>>88743540
Based.
>>
>>88746655
Because American cape comics began using the shared universe as a sales gimmick and now most of their readers are incredibly invested in it. It's just SO IMPORTANT to them that they know exactly when Dildo Man first met Captain Fart and whether this was before or after the third time they were rebooted.
>>
>>88747647
Capes didn't invent canon.
Why are you so upset?
>>
>>88730806
He the ace. That's all you need to know.
>>
>>88746655
I don't think it's an American thing but a need culture thing, like with academia, you can discuss many theories and ideas but knowing what's "true" separates the dedicated from the casual, being a casual fan is seen as a sin in any forum, which is kinda sad because being really dedicated to a pastime like comics, cartoons or video games is what's wrong. In the end it's just a hobby.
>>
>>88746474
Bingo. He can fight like a heroic demon when his back is to the wall, but only after getting himself in more trouble to start with.
>>
>>88734581
Disney didn't want Mickey in Kingdom Hearts for those very reasons but they eventually let him be appart of the games. Badass King Mickey is best incarnation of Mickey. He's still the mischievous mouse we all love but is a total badass King.

Though how does time flow for Mickey and the other Disney toon of Disney Castle/Town? Huey, Dewy, and Louie are all still the same age in KH and KH2 as they were in BBS which was 10 years prier to the first game. Also, do Max and PJ exist in KHverse as soilder's in training at Disney Castle? I just want to see the look on Sora's face when he finds out Goofy and Pete have kids,

They quit making Mickey cartoons around 1950 or so, really early on in the company history mostly.

But they kept on making Goofy and Donald ones. Chip and Dale, the Professor, etc were also a lot more popular in the mid 50's. But Mickey was mostly kept as the face because they did not want to make the character into a parody or make it "impure" in some way to maintain the perfect friendly face for kids. But that makes for really boring cartoons so they did not bother. (old Ub Iwerks Mickey was more of a dick)

After that he only really appeared as the mascot character and in ensemble specials like the Christmas Carol or the 50th anniversary thingy.
>>
Italian Mickey is basically portrayed as either:
1. Boring Supercompetent Nice Guy. Especially in the 90s. Even Italy got tired of it, especially because at least in the 80s they still could publish mass-murders!

2. Laughing Stock of Everybody, usually because either he uses common sense in a world that makes no sense or because everybody is some degree of medium aware\genre savvy except him. Most likely a response to 1

3. Action Mickey, who isn't infallible and throws himself in troubles without thinking things through

There is also a more rare example of Darker Mickey, like when he became Witch-King or Hard Boiled
