This story is competently told, but am I the only one who just thinks that CARNAGE THE WOULD-BE HERALD OF THE LOVECRAFTIAN ELDER GODS just doesn't work?

It's on par with "Spider-Man, avatar of the spider totem god" on "hairbrained concepts writers are making their damndest to make it work".
