>He doesnt like based Black Manta
Get some fucking taste anon. Hes the Captain Ahab of DC. Villains wanting to take over the world or cause chaos are a dime a dozen. Manta however is an exceptionally skilled, normal person who could do so much more, and yet all he wants is to make one man's life a living hell.

Manta's fun because of how ludicrous he can get.
>Kill Aquaman's son, beg for mercy, and then proceed to ask him "How are the wife and kids" some time later
>Joined the Suicide Squad because they had a helmet that let him see every target as Aquaman
>Took over a secret covert organization and made their new primary goal to frame Atlantis for war.
>Used the race card
>Used the rape card
>Used the autism card
>>

In the Crime Syndicate universe there might be a extremely nice, hopeful good guy version of Manta (White Ray) who keeps trying to save Sea King.

Those were all excuses for his actions
He said he hated Aquaman because he didn't save him from rapist pirates when he was boy.
He said that he wanted to conquer Atlantis because "blacks weren't welcomed on the surface"
He blamed his crimes on undiagnosed autism on one occasion
>>
>>88713342

>>
>>88713388
In truth Manta doesnt even remember why he hates Arthur. Not that it even matters anymore, hes just so consumed by hatred that its the only thing he knows. Every time Manta believes Arthur is dead his life loses all meaning. Probably one of my favorite scenes is Manta calmly walking out of a fish market (after killing everyone for no reason) into the sea so he can retrieve his suit.

66KB, 400x600px
Literally just an XTREEM gay version of Batman. I hate Batwank but it's even worse with Midnighter, because he's not nearly cool enough to have everything job to him. It's particularly awful because the XTREEM gay version of Superman in The Authority is a weak sack of shit who constantly jobs, so Midnighter and Apollo together are just an example of META Batwank.
>>
>>88713907

Literally just a problem in Orlando's run. In the Authority, he never took on anyone who was unreasonably out of his League, and he got his shit kicked in a couple of times.

Apollo's problem is not that he jobs, it's that no writer knows (or cares about) what to do with him.
>>
>>88713907
Very satisfyingly kills people who normal heroes wouldn't kill even though they deserve it and is usually written reasonably funny. But the "fight computer blahblah" talk that seems to crop up more frequently every time he appears is very annoying.
>>
>>88713907
Meh, I think he works best if you try to separate him from Batman altogether. He's a lot more fun and much less of a stick in the mud (no pun intended) than Batman, at least.
>>
>>88713445
It makes you sympathize with Aquaman because honestly, what the fuck did he do to deserve this guy as a nemesis?

I like Black Manta because his biggest superpower is being an asshole. It's strangely relateable. We've all known someone like Black Manta, even if they didn't have a sweet helmet.

Purple Man in general is a shitty boring villain, but it really baffles me how this obnoxious manbaby version of him gets so much love. Is it just tennantfags?

Zoom was or still is a Flash fanboy to the point he has almost similar powers. Manta depending on which version is a normal joe who trained himself to tack his prey.

Ennis' run started with a tank firing a shell at Midnighter, Midnighter roundhousing the shell into another tank to blow it up, then destroying two more tanks with his bare hands. If anything Orlando's run features a very low-powered version of Midnighter.

>>88716290
Part of the problem, and one that is shared by all mindcontrol villains, is that they're either exceptional indirect or so intimately personal that it becomes difficult to tell interesting stories about them. They're psychological horror villains in an action/adventure story.
>>
>>88713279
Would those issues be curbed somewhat if she had half competent help around the house?
>>
>>88716462
You seem awfully hung up on his Judaism.
>>
>>88716524
>They're psychological horror villains
If Kilgrave was a psychological HORROR villain, maybe he'd be good, but he wasn't scary in any way.

There's so much psychological horror potential with mind-control and none of it is ever used with mind-control villains.
>>
>>88716707

When it defines half of your character for no real purpose, it's stupid.
>>
>>88716841
You REALLY seem hung up on him and completely missing the point of his character.

Also it feels like you're intentionally ignoring a whole lot of shit involving them.
Actually, it just sounds like they personally remind you of someone.
>>
>>88716741
Purple Man is much better in Alias than Jessica Jones. I think a big issue is that his childishness is presented as more a blackly humorous aside to the readers in Alias whereas JJ presents him as humorous to the characters.

Rucka had a pretty good moment of psychological horror with Doctor Psycho back during his first WW run and all it featured was Psycho putting into a woman's head the perception that he was running his hand up her thigh.
>>
>>88713039
In a modern day comic book setting in which every villain has complex and often sympathetic motives, there's something charming about the fact that Black Manta just really, really, really hates Aquaman.

>>88713122
Modern comics have done a good job at humanising him and turnign him from a whiny edgelord into a more legitimate and interesting character.

>>88713154
She's endearingly normal for someone in the Batfamily and had pretty good character dynamics with Damian and Cassandra

>>88713178
The characters and actors have a great chemistry and play off each other very well while stil feeling close-knit enough to be a family. They ultimately feel like the most genuine "super team" out of all the currently released superhero films.

>>88713186
She's domineering and assertive, but she's also supportive, intelligent and caring and her voice is hot.

>>88713335
At one point in his career he was a relatable everyman character who could bring a sense of joviality and lightheartedness to any appearance with his sense of humour while also being the heart of the Marvel Universe due to his code of ethics.

Although these days he's a billionaire scientist who fucks supermodels.

>>88713812
When written correctly, he's probably one of the deepest comic book characters who is rife for character exploration and development.

Plus Gothm is an interesting setting.

>>88713907
He's Gay Batman who is married to Superman and goes around fucking shit up while being super gay. Come on.

>>88714419
It's an absurdist parody of the talk show format.

>>88716166
His powers and the way they are portrayed made him amusing and fun to watch, and David Tennant is a fun actor.

>>88716462
Kyle is the voice of reason and a cool guy, but is also prone to becoming overly moralistic or being as manipulative as Cartman which allows him to be used in more creative ways than Stan. Lately they've even been lampshading his tendency to be the moral centre of South Park.

Kenny can't talk.
>>
>>88717171

>Kenny can't talk.

Read my post again.
>>
>>88717192
Kenny's inability to talk makes him a character with limited use, explaining his lack of screentime. He's kind of a one-note joke character who has fallen into the background because of it.
>>
>>88717214

Read it once more, but slowly.
>>
>>88716957
Now that you mention it, I did like Alias Purple Man more. He may be a one-dimensional sociopath, but at least he felt more credible as a threat.

>JJ presents him as humorous to the characters.
That definitely was a problem. Also "laugh at him, not with him" attitude for viewers hurt him too. This is a slasher movie problem where they make the antagonist a butt of all jokes and still expect the viewer to consider him a serious threat.

>>>88717171
>the way they are portrayed
Boring?
>made him amusing and fun to watch
No
>>
>>88717392
>they make the antagonist a butt of all jokes and still expect the viewer to consider him a serious threat.

To be fair if you can pull it off the contrast is incredibly effective.

And Alias Purple Man had some pretty subtle characterization. The scene where Jessica is talking to him in prison and he's narrating stage direction was great.
>>
>>88717886
>if you can pull it off
Too bad writers Jessica Jones couldn't. Fuck, even Buffy did it better and I hate Buffy villains with a passion.
>>
>>88718044
*writers of
Of course
>>
>>88718044
Buffy didn't really go for that, assuming you're talking about Warren. Him not being a serious threat is what caused him to snap and start shooting, and even after all that he still wasn't a serious threat.
>>
>>88717259
I read it, I'm just also providing insight into why Kenny isn't used often.
>>
>>88718148
I'm talking about Angelus. He was kind of a goofball and the show didn't hide it, but he was also unsettling when he needed to be.

>>
>>88718206
Yeah, the big difference is that Angelus was given goofball interactions with other characters, but his actions themselves were always treated seriously.
>>
>>88713122

I am honestly not sure why I love him so much.
I liked him before he came back from the dead.
Maybe it's because he's more blatant/aggressive.
>>
>>88715766
that's true for literally every Robin and ex-robin
they all at least get a story where they are certified as better than everyone else
>>
>>88718566
That's where contrast comes from, doesn't it?
JJ put too much into making Kilgrave a joke, but his serious actions fall flat, for me at least so there's not much contrast.
>>
>>88713122
I just like blatantly 90s characters. Jason Todd, Punisher, Lobo, Wolverine, Cable.
>>
>>88718795
Part of the problem is that most of the time he comes off as so petty and banal that his evil moments seem a little tacked on. Honestly, as written, JJ would have worked better if the perspective had been flipped.
>>
>>88718969
>Jason Todd
>Punisher
>Wolverine

>He's not tragic, and he wasn't in the right. He was a man who went insane and drove his family away.
How is that not tragic? I'll agree he was never "right", but at his core he was a man that wanted to undo his mistakes so he could have his family back. The sad part is he actually regains clarity at the very end and knows all the years he spent causing tragedy was all for naught.
