Fully inked and screentoned first page of my new minicomic. Gonna bang it out myself with my new A3 printer/scanner, pencilling it in thirds, then lettering, inking and toning as I go. Got three fully pencilled (and lettered in pencil) pages ready to go next. Thanks, though that's not actually how it's meant to be laid out, that's just where I leave it while I'm working on it.
The folding glaive in particular took ages to design, it's hard to make folding weapons that don't need modern alloys to avoid shattering as soon as you swing them.

I feel like the bow needs redone, maybe replaced with a Heavy Crossbow or Musket if the DM allows guns, it just doesn't match the rest of the set. That and I may change the color of the poncho/hat or glasses because it looks too much like a certain japanese vampire.

Try to push yourself until you get a bit better, then you'll get motivated by looking at you progress. Or you can try to look at other peoples (good artists') progress too. Seeing the reward is best way to get motivated
>>
>>88712637
It would benefit you to construct your characters a bit more thoroughly, try doing some rough shapes before doing the real line work, from what I can see on that page, your characters poses look improvised, the arms bend awkwardly and that one guy has his finger behind his head, try doing those poses yourself and see if they feel natural, if they don't, then the pose is wrong.

>>88712753
Her torso curves too far in at the chest, and her breasts look melted together instead of separate parts, it also looks like you're trying to avoid drawing hands and legs by hiding them or putting them in "easy" poses, use references and challenge yourself, you'll find your finished work a lot more satisfying that way!

>>88712807
This is good, my only suggestions would be to shorten the length of the arms and push the head back some, it looks like she's slouching, ignore me if that was your intent.

Ignore all previous advice and realize not everyone needs to sketch the same way or do the same line work or work at the same pace and if it helps to draw slower, then do it. If you cannot possibly steady your hands even after practice, then make the chicken scratch aesthetic work for you by figuring out how often you should be holding the pencil down before lifting or maybe even just darkening certain areas so not everything has the same line weight and therefore everything doesn't feel "light and scratchy".

If the left works best for you, then find artists who draw like the left and see how they get their sketches to work and still be pleasing rather than assuming you always need to do the right.

What does /co/ think of my art?

http://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/keit-ai/list?title_no=36825

Here's the premise.

A boy falls in love with a girl. He is mysteriously gifted with her phone number. He calls her and finds out that she likes him as well. But the next day, she doesn't remember the confession. The girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who likes his own alternate self. Hijinks ensue as the two tell each other their darkest secrets to conquer the hearts of their other selves.

>>
>>88727517
All mainstream comics do. To me the lettering is a part of the art of cartooning.IMHO it needs to have the same sort of individuality or character that an artist brings to his drawings. Look at Clowes or Ware or Crumb for amazing writers/artists/letterers--the only digital part of their process is the colouring. Plus digital just generally looks bad. Only passable examples are those when a cartoonist has made a font out of his writing and converted it into digital. It has character but not as much as hand-lettered stuff. It can spoil a really nice page. Especially those egregious digital sound effects, urgh.

Go for it. If not here, maybe someone on /ic/ would want to collaborate.

Some artists are good and can't ink out a story and some writers are good who can't sketch out a story. Double-edge sword.

Although, beware of those who expect some form of monetary for their work. You'll be lucky to find one who'll do it free of charge.

How about animatics, do you guys want to look at an animatic.

I need some crit on this thing I'm working on because I'm going to start production in a couple of weeks...I'm at the point where I think I'm ready to animate but I've shot myself in the foot a few times because I act too soon. I just don't know if the timing is alright because I've been working on it for a while now. I also had to cut stuff out so I'm not sure if more things could be cut out or if it's fine how it is (?).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghX0OUuZSsM

And ignore the subtitles, they don't match the dialogue and I was too lazy to render out each image again without them.

and don't say cut the entire short don't

In keeping with the cowboy theme I've decided to replace the bow with a gun. Unfortunately guns don't exist in setting (d&d). So instead I've made a spring-powered crossbow that looks like a gun!

Does this seem somewhat plausible thus far? though that's more of a /k/ question (Ignoring for now that it'd likely have a lower velocity than a "normal" crossbow- that can be handwaved away as fantasy metals having better springy-ness.)

It's completely nonmagic with one exception- there's a small magic crank that turns the gears which pulls the springs back. You can use a normal crank, which is normally stored in a small bag pictured, if it malfunctions or you're in an anti-magic field.

Not pictured- when the chain pulls the springs all the way back, it opens the top of the "chamber" (If it were a gun) where you put the bolt in, after which you press a button/switch to have a much smaller spring (not pictured, it's in the middle between the large springs) pull the chain back into the neutral/unrolled position (This spring isn't as high tension, so it rolls back in rather than snapping like a bow) so it doesn't add resistance to the main springs when fired, which also closes the top chamber.

W.I.P

I sketched really bad ''heads'' that represented concepts for characters and then one by one I'm correcting the drawings while developing those concepts of characters.

The point is to create the people that will live in the town, what do you guys think?
>>
>>88772270

i think there are some really fun characters on here, like 'bro and sis firefighter'. I think some are a bit cliche like 'crazy doctor' and 'gym couple', but if that's what you're going for, the designs are fine.
>>
>>88747151
The majority of eyeball characters (I'm really only thinking of Commander Peepers and Kitaro's dad here but they're also the only relevant ones) are very small in stature, so you might find a niche in designing them as taller, perhaps with a focus on fashion?

That's kind of the point, trying to come up with all kind of characters/citizens, from the cliche to the more specific kind of people that you can find.

The idea is to come up with tons of characters first and try to tell stories around them Twilight Zone style, with the two big girls being the lead and her best friend

Posting first in a series of single-panel "gag" cartoons. Needs a tad bit more line work doing and the fattish guy in the beanie is going to have a huge wall of speech that will go behind all the other character's thoughts, if you can envision that--like he's just droning on and on and on...oh needs screentoning, too. I'm going kind of screentone mad at the moment, I love playing about with the stuff...plus it's great for really fine hand-eye coordination! Gotta be careful with dem X-Acto's, drawfriends! God, this. I've been drawing for 20 years, but I encourage my non-artist friends and co-workers to draw me something, anything. When they do, their undisciplined scrawls are so incredibly awesome to me and I kept it all in a scrapbook that eventually became lost during a move.

This has encouraged some of the people I've asked to keep their own sketchbook. I tell them "you don't need to draw something technically well, just draw to convey your idea or intended feeling/mood/whatever. Don't draw me a perfect pig, just let me believe that your little circle with ears, piggy nose and curly tail is a pig."

Loomis, Drawing the Head And Hands. Excellent section on the female head.

Also get some images of skulls and see if you can keep track of race and gender, compare them to one another to see how the landmarks differ. Women's skulls are very different to men's. Also neotenous features, if you're aiming for an attractive woman.

I got a first edition of Creative illustration in '91 for 50 quid, hardly anyone knew loomis' name then-it was only through Steve Rude mentioning him in interviews and the copies in his first Kichen sink sketchbook that turned me onto him. Gonna expand my Loomis library now, what with the reprints and all. There's another guy from the same era who is quite similar to Loomis, Harry Anderson, there was a big piece on him in Illustrator magazine.

>>
>>88781152
Try dinkybox.com, that's where I get mine, they have a huge selection of the deleter screentone patterns. 20 quid for a four-sheet set, each one a different pattern or whatever. I just stick to the basic tones. The 20 quid "volumes" are slightly smaller than A3, or about the size of a piece of US original art before shrinkage and reproduction. Well worth it. Apparently the original American Zip-A-Tone was the creme-de-la-creme but they stopped making that years ago. But the Deleter stuff is good, nice and sticky, just not too great with really tiny areas, you'll have a problem with stuff that's a millimetre wide and 6 or 7 long but there are ways around that.
Modern (analogue) screentone mastrs are Steven Weissman and Ryan Cecil Smith, they're fucking experts with the stuff and it enhances their pages SOOO much.
>>
>>88781370

Thanks I'll have to check that out. I just wanted to mess with it and see how it works.
>>
>>88781751
Get yourself an X-Acto knife. It's really simple, cut out a shape larger than the area you want to cover, stick it on and then cut around it to fit it to the form. Takes a very sharp blade and a light touch, not to mention a steady hand. Of course if you have decent photoshop-fu ya could just buy the screentone, scan it and use it as a pre-loaded effect on your tablet. me, I'm analogue all the way, I'm kind of...old...in that respect. Either way it's great to play around with and kind of addictive. The shirt on the Stevie Wonder card and the same pattern on the couch cushion from the letter are all screentone.

Hi Batman

It's been a while since I posted in one of these threads
>>
>>88789130
Nice! Far, far too much manga influence for my liking but your linework and watercolour work is lovely! What are you inking with? Hunt's? Or is it one of the Japanese bowl nibs, maybe a G? Tried using them before but that weird stiff way that the tines flex feels too bizarre for me, a Hunt 108 can produce the same effects whilst giving a thinner line, too. sorry, I love drawing
tool porn
>>88779974
How is your scanner with black and white or greyscale? If it copes with them fine then I dunno what to say....are you space doppelganger? Or am I getting confused, 'cause those look computer coloured. So I'm assuming you're scanning in b & w images? Mind you, old adage about assuming etc etc...
>>
>>88789387
G-Pen. I've used 108s before, but I stopped buying them when I got a pair that were stiffer than the crow quills I got with them, while the crow quills weren't stiff enough, and neither were as flexible as the 108s I'd gotten before. These days I actively avoid Hunt's, I can't be having with this lack of quality control.

I am an unrepentant weeb but /a/ sucks
>>
>>88789439
Hah, I fucking knew it was a G pen, I could tell by the way the line joins up at the upside-down "C" shape at the end of her hair.
You're completely right, Japanese nibs are built like fucking tanks, they're like three times thicker than Hunt's, but....I just love the line quality from 108's and 102's. I always buy them by the box 'cause there's usually one or two that are a bit shitty, never had the problem you've experienced and I've been using them for, I'd say, 8 years now. That is a weird one. Did you always buy them by the pair?
I've used the Maru nibs too, which most everyone says are "the equivalent of a Hunt 102" but frankly that's BS, they're nowhere fucking NEAR as flexible as a 102. They're fucking mapping pens--and a 102 ain't a mapping pen! Bought a dozen expecting the second Coming after all these ecstatic reviews, never been so disappointed with a drawing tool (apart from those shitty, blue bulbous-handled W & N sable brushes--fucking might have gotten a bad one but I did the flick test three times and the point was fine, got it home, started inking with it, five strokes in and the hairs were splitting! Bullshit things. So I just got a new Series 7 which is fucking heaven to use. Anyway, I digress, as I usually do...sorry!). Have you ever used the Japanese bowl points (forgotten their correct name), fucking David B., the great French cartoonist, uses those and G-pens, I was pretty surprised by that for some reason. Anyway how are the bowl points (if you've used 'em)?
I have loads of pro Normiebook friends and those who use Hunt's 102's and 108's absolutely DECRY the quality control but just love the line quality too much to give 'em up. Weirdly though the Hunt Speedball lettering pens are still REALLY well made, a couple of FB friends use 'em for linework, I got a set of "C"'s myself and they're fucking great for making quick, block letters and you can ink linework with the smallest two, in fact I think Charles Schulz used a C-5.
>>
>>88789807
>Did you always buy them by the pair?
That or more. Seems daft to buy a single nib at a time. I've bought more 102s than 108s, and the stiffness seems to vary quite a bit.
>those shitty, blue bulbous-handled W & N sable brushes
I've used these, had a #4 Round that lasted me a good long time but the #3 Pointed Rounds gave up pretty quick.
>Have you ever used the Japanese bowl points
They call them "kabura"(spoon). Like a lot(All?) of Japanese nibs they're based on a western nib(the hunt 513 in this case if I'm not wrong), but I haven't used the Hunt version. The Nikko one I have is really very stiff, but not as stiff as the maru pens. It tends to glide over the paper a bit more than the G-pen or maru but still produces a really fine line.
>Charles Schulz used a C-5
Actually, he used an Esterbrook 914, and when the company went under he bought their remaining stock. You can buy them from the museum IIRC.
>>
>>88790015
Yeah-I realised my mistake, I was thinking of Ernie Bushmiller who used a B-5 (?--the rounded point lettering nibs, actually). Thanks for the correction though Anon! Will have to check out the Esterbrook nibs. Funnily enough it WAS a #3 W & N sable! I have a shitty old Series 7 #1 that I use for white-out effects and maybe a bit of drybrush here and there that I've had for 7 years, the hairs are split quite a bit but it STILL gets a much, MUCH better line than those blue #3 pieces of shit!
I probably wouldn't like the kabura points if they're really stiff, then--thanks a lot for the info, Anon, appreciate the tool porn conversation! Happy New year fellow drawfriend!

It certainly hasn't been the first time I've been told that, lol. I have a bad habit for going all-out with the details on every aspect in my drawings. I'll try to be more keen to that rule when I go to work on my third issue though. Thanks!

When you mean by "more fundamentals and better anatomy", I assume you're remarking about the overall composition of the top panel and the wonky anatomy on the character in the two bottom panels?

I agree either way, lol. I'll try to be more attentive with my character's anatomy and my compositional decisions in the next issue.

The fucking co-founder of Titan publishing and Forbidden Planet (sorry to namedrop!) read my first mini with those characters and made the same observation. Apart from that he liked it, which I was fucking buzzing about! Man, the stories he told me and the unseen art he showed me....wow. At the time he had a little shop-within-a-shop at Orbital Comics in London, sold records, original art (he had some AMAZING early 2000ad pages, fucking stunning) and old original film posters. Sound as fuck dude, I don't think there's any big-name creator in the industry he doesn't know. I've told the story about the "top-secret" Dave McKean project he showed me a few pages of on here before, he also showed me some (pretty shit desu) pictures of fucking FAIRIES by Bisley (whose music career he managed at one point!) but also some amazing unseen Sienkiewicz stuff....sorry for the digression...

>the further things are, the less details we can see
There's a couple of ways to go about atmospheric perspective, but generally it comes down to simplifying things and reducing the value range. Pic related - the value range in the distance is very narrow, and as you can see, there's little detail. The easiest way to do this is ink is to ignore the details on distant objects - they can't usually be seen and aren't usually important, or even a distraction, so can be considered a waste of your time in many cases - and focus on the shape and value.
>>
>>88801484
Yeah, thanks, I don't mean to sound like a prick, I knw all that, it's just a habit I can't seem to get out of, mate! BUT it's just with organic details like flora--with buildings and other structures I don't have the problem, 's'weird...cheers anon--and Heppy Noo Yeer! Little Krazy Kat for ya, there....
>>
>>88801962
That's fair. Then it's just down to very intentionally setting out to do it and then following through. Studies would probably be a good place for this, especially if you like any sort of painting(atmospheric perspective is super easy in paint).
>>
>>88802217
Good advice, thanks. I dunno if I subconciously took that chapter in Understanding Comics to heart where McCloud talks about that common manga technique--forgotten what he calls it--where you have cartoony, iconic characters against detailed, realistic backgrounds...damn, what's the name of it?!

>>88802315
He was talking about Ligne Claire and Herge. But Herge's backgrounds, while realistic, aren't actually terribly detailed. Not like McCloud's panel on the next page, but even here you can get a feel for the atmospheric perspective.
>>
>>88802522
Yeah, that's what I was thinking of, "masking". Yeah Herge's b/g's aren't detailed just realistic, as you said. I suppose it's kind of heretical to say but as well-versed as I am in comics, I've never really had much time for Tin Tin. Of course the drawing is beautiful but I never really got a lot out of the stories, I think I should try again now, as an adult. I guess it's similar how other really well-informed, passionate comics readers may not care for, say, Krazy Kat or Peanuts, for instance.
It's weird I remember that first panel being from an actual manga. Haven't read U.C for ages.

Hey guys. I'm an absolute beginner, literally barely ever drew before. How long do you give me until I'm able to draw anything that deserves being shown? (and being called "art")
>>
>>88811274
3-4 years provided you keep on learning, practicing, and drawing on a committed basis.
>>
>>88811274

>How long

That honestly depends on many factors. What you practice, how you practice, how well you take to the information and how easily you're able to apply it soon after. Everyone learns and improves at different rates. You just have to stay committed to it. Even when you feel like you aren't getting better, you are.

Also, as a slightly unrelated side note in general. You're never too old to start drawing. How old you are doesn't limit the things you can draw.

These all ink? try using pencil to get your shading, and avoid the all over blur tool.
Don't forget to practice doing different poses and angles. If you enjoy Gigers work/style maybe go check out the Dark Star documentary.

keep at it with practicing, maybe switch it up and focus on the body first before adding a head.

>>88824896
Doing good, you're developing a style. Focus on foreground versus back ground proportions since you're trying to keep them the same size, and be aware of how 'natural' your body is while carrying the head.

but they dont really look like they all belong in the same comic
>>

When you master the basics, that's when you can twist and turn them to just about any form you like.

Shapes, anatomy, all that stuff.

Whats your opinion on copying other pictures? Not tracing them, but drawing using the original picture as a reference and trying to replicate it? I've been doing it a number of times, mainly to see how other coloring styles and detail drawing methods work
>>
>>88833272
That's fine, as long as it isn't your primary form of practice. Drawing based on real people and drawing from imagination are more important imo.
>>
So I've decided to do exercises from draw a box. Would working with pigment liner for exercises really do more for someone's skills instead of the usual pencil?

Question to everybody: why do you think these threads are so quick to crumble? What could be done to extend their lifespan?

>>88838160
Thank you, my man.
>>
>>88838578
>why do you think these threads are so quick to crumble?

I remember that they used to be pretty active, but then threads like this concerning webcomics started popping up so these threads started losing steam while the webcomic ones became popular
>>
>>88838578
Possibly a lack of focus or clarity? I'm honestly not 100% clear on what these threads are specifically about. Is it a showcase of recent works? A WIP/Sketch critique thread? Just a "share whatever the fuck, m80" thread? I'm not really sure, so I'm never totally sure what to post. It's not like in the OC and Webcomic threads that have a clearer focus.

I could just be an idiot and "all of the above" is the answer. In which case I might actually participate in future threads. Or in the future of this one if it survives for a while longer.

Also that picture gives me a big "ow" feeling.

>>

Isn't that the point? Show your work and discuss?
>>
>>88840713
Yeah but everyone just wants to dump and no one wants to talk. Webcomic threads and OC threads at least have the benefit of talking through ideas however much that counts for.
>>
>>88840779
From what I gather, most of the artists in these threads are very polite and thank any form of feedback, so theres not much room for discussion in a purely feedback thread, at least with OC and HYW threads ideas about the characters and stories can be shared, but theres not much discussion when it comes to feedback and thank yous.

I made art of two characters I invented in high school. I haven't drawn in a long time but I've been reading some of John K.'s stuff lately so I figured I might as well give it a go.

The left one is extroverted, the right one is introverted. They get into wacky high school adventures like dating, emotional trauma, meeting new friends, dependency issues, preparing for college, losing limbs, the whole shebang. Fun for the whole family.

It sounds a lot more dramatic when I write it out like that.
>>
>>88841976
Sounds like it would be perfect for one of those interactive comics

Can I get an honest opinion on this? It's just a quick little practice thing I did.

I know it's nothing special, but the thing is, I suck at drawing. Bad. This is the first time I've freehanded a face using PS. Normally when I do art, I content cannibalize aka i'm a fucking hack and I grab a bunch of pieces that I like, mash them together in PS, and then trace over all the elements I like to make "new" art. I mostly draw porn... But this time, I decided to do it all myself.
>>
>>88844057
i'd work on breaking out of symbol drawing for starters. Like how you have those eyes , that would be considered symbol drawing.

Other examples are corner suns, trees that look like broccoli and such
>>
>>88844480
Stop this meme shit.

>>88844550

>>
>>88844480

But he's right. Even if you're drawing cartoons, you should be drawing the forms, not the symbols.

Unless you wanna be Andrew Dobson or Chris Hart. By all means, be a hack.
>>88844718
Define "making it." It's not too hard to get decent, it just takes time and effort. Don't let others tell you what success is, either - it's something you do for you, so set your own goals.

No it isn't
>>
>>88709418
Where do I start?
I can draw extremely muscular men and weirdly proportioned women from all those years watching He-Man, reading 90s comics and going to body building competitions, but I'm not sure if this experience would count for anything.
I'm also good at drawing belts and pauldrons from my time making Warhammer art.
>>
>>88803978
Don't be such a jerk,friendo
>>
>>88847064
What do you want to draw, anon?
>>
>>88847096
Slightly less muscular men and women that don't look like men or like they did rib removal surgery four times.
>>
>>88847125
Well I would start there. If you find it troublesome, do life studies. Once you have the anatomy down changing the musculature shouldn't be too hard.
