I dreamed about Homestuck's ending last night, because I guess my subconscious forgot about the real one. What happened was the kids were somehow able to kill Lord English, leaving behind only his pool ball eyes. The last thing you see was Caliborn stumbling upon them. So that's why Paradox Space allowed English to be killed: it had to fulfill a timeloop of Caliborn gaining power in the first place, and English knew this, so he had to let it happen. And then the eyes being in that loop fits into being jujus.

I feel like Karkat being the head of a failed session is an important part of his character, but at the same time YEESH.

Like a way better ending for him would've been accepting that his focus on winning cost his friends their chance to develop as people, and maybe end up not as a great warrior or king but, dare I say, a patriarch for the surviving trolls, sort of an Abraham figure leading them through the void to a new world to start over. I'm pretty sure we readers got the idea the characters in the comic were "interesting" or "complex" because they had very specific character voices, interests, text colors and typing preferences which contributed to differentiating them.
But the truth is, most of them were paper-thin. They had those "properties" I listed, but they did not have depth. Characterizing four main characters is already a hard task, so when the cast exploded in size, character depth became informed. We were shown increasingly less and told increasingly more. By the time the comic got to the alpha kids, it was over.

We know his motivations, his past history, his relationships and the way he deals with people, his likes, his dislikes, his goals, his insecurities, etc.

Thing is, some of them weren't and when you have a cast of characters as fucking stuffed as Homestuck, you're bound to get some of them right.

Take Dave. He finally gets out of his brother's shadow, only to find that his powers give him a front row seat to Sburbs' rigid adherence to the timeline and is forced to play along as a slave to the timeline and occasionally watch himself die to stop his friends from barreling down a doomed timeline and dying for real. This leads to a self image that doesn't allow him to take the spotlight or attack problems directly, illustrated by his refusal to draw swords without breaking them, but he's strong enough and devoted to his friends enough to deal with it, accept the changes he's going through for the betterment of the team, and keep moving.

And then Hussie starts pandering to tumblr and suddenly all his character growth culminates in him being "gay".

Even the trolls had solid foundations, arcs, and relationships. Not all of them were satisfying, but that was the point. They were a failed game session and realized too late that Sburb challenges your character as much or more than your gaming prowess. Shit, I'd even defend the initial characterization of the alpha kids and having two sets of them join the game at asynchronous points in their timeline was pretty fucking smart and well handled, but the Ancestor trolls were fucking garbage without exception and everything the characters did from their introduction onward was fucking boring and drawn out for no reason, and then the retcon fucking sealed the deal on Homestuck's shittiness.

The twist was that Sburb maintained a rigid timeline that killed you if you deviated from it, but lead to a "canon" loss for both humans and troll players. The 3rd act (metaphorically speaking) should have been about overcoming that inevitability while growing as people, but instead we just got more fucking people and a cop out.

This is a good look at a bunch of problems, which really comes down to Hussie's infatuation with denying expectations. That's fine to a point, but when that's all you fucking do its not surprising or insightful, its just, well, expected.

For what its worth I think the beta kids were all good characters with the potential to have been GREAT characters if Hus had let them interact with each other more. Rose and Jade especially could've had an amazing arc together-they literally switch spiritual roles as both embrace their classes, how do you not wring some drama from that?!

The Alphas could've been good if handled better but then it became tumblr: the fucking arc.

Like she got what she fucking deserved, and it was good! She died at a GOOD point in the story! She was done! Finished! Fini! Dunzo! And killing her was a GREAT moment for Terezi to show that she was actually fucking serious about justice instead of just playing a little girl game with people's lives like Vriska was, that she had learned a lesson from her trying to kill John and fucking around with Dave's head after all.

Vriska was a great villain but her time was finished and bringing her back wasn't just a sign of Hussie having no fucking idea what to do, it reads as Terezi actively regressing and allowing a cancerous personality that turns everything into being about her to turn the comic into being about her again.

Vriska simply regressing after the retcon is awful, but it is substantially less thorough and unenjoyable compared to the burning trash heap that is (Vriska).
