It feels like it wants to do too much, and is rushing to do those things. Shit like Nightmare Knight secretly being extremely affable and redeemable should be built up to super slowly, but now it's just kinda there and it's like "shit the comic's only half-done?" I actually have no idea how they're going to keep it interesting. I assume it's supposed to be a TEC situation since a lot of Cucumber Quest feels like Paper Mario, but TEC still spent most of the game as a strict antagonist before turning around.

There are probably other examples of rushed plot points but that's the only one I remember.

Though I still think it's funny that Gigi didn't realize she made a trans character that was all about deceiving people, and by the time it was pointed out to her it was way too late to change it.

Gigi's problem is that she's not a good writer. She has great comedic timing in short bursts but this is beyond her. She would have created a much more interesting comic if she had just made everything a textless art comic. A straight "lol, jrpgs" comic made a tonal shift it wasn't originally meant to have. The issue stems from Cucumber only being able to ask "why" so many times before actually putting his foot down or before it becomes too unbelivable that literally no one else asked the same question for the whole 500,000 years that it happened, and because the story would've just been the same joke over and over with no real narrative meat.

Honestly tho, I haven't really been let down by this comic yet? The moods and lighting are still excellent, and I find that each chapter still manages to resolve itself just fine, developing the main story and leaving new questions for the next chapter.

If there's a point where Gigi's less-excellent writing skills will ruin the whole thing, it'll be the current chapter, because she'll have to explain why we're taking such a big detour from the chapter's Disaster Master in favor of wand backstory, premature Almond drama, or whatever thebestmaster's supposed to be doing. Papyrus and Sans are named after fonts because a friend of Toby's named Jones is the creator of a webcomic about a skeleton, both of which are named Helvetica. Toby's characters were a little joke on that.

Jones's comic faded completely into obscurity as a consequence of their busy life as a graphic designer and Papyrus and Sans are more widely known and beloved than anything Jones could ever hope to make will ever be.

The truth behind this is that the kingdom they're in right now is gemstone-themed, and people already like to draw comparisons between CQ and Steven Universe based on incidental things like both stories having a villain-turned-tsundere named Peridot and a heavy "cosmic" aesthetic that they both borrowed from Kirby games, so she basically decided that she had to completely redo a lot of this chapter or else risk more of this nonsense from readers by delving into a bunch of other gem characters she'd risk drawing parallels to characters from a show she doesn't even like all that much with.

Well the Warriors is also a modern adaption of Xenophon's Anabasis . I'd say it has some value in that as well. Granted the Anabasis isn't the best Greek cultural artificial. In that way in kind of transcends time a bit.

It's based on a timeless story, but it entrenched itself in too much '70s culture. Go around and keep saying "Can you dig it?" like I do and find out for yourself.

It's a comic that feels like it wants to have its cake and eat it too. Gigi wanted to move away from simple parodies of video games but she did so by moving to a comic that's still a parody of video games, just more broad genre conventions rather than specific games.

However, the humor is still exactly the same, just with original characters/settings. This is bad for a long running comic with an ongoing plot (as opposed to the shorter parodies of before) because it's basically the same joke over and over ("lol jrpg cliches").

Even worse is that when the story makes attempts at seriousness it comes off as completely clashing with the overall tone, none of the characters have enough depth or traits at all to fall back on for legitimate development because they all are simple parodies of jrpg character cliches, there's nothing else to them. Essentially, there's no strong base to build on for these characters and this setting, and any attempt at emotional depth is really hard to take seriously.

The fact is, it's not written well. Moving aside the SJW issues. I don't really give about one way or another. Her writing is as much an issue as the pacing. She'd be better off not writing anything or putting up a prelettered version.

I still like the story.

There's kind of a silly number of lesbians in it but that doesn't bother me.

I don't mind the pacing, it doesn't update as often as I'd like but read archivally it flows well. It's not like this is her full time job so I don't know what people are expecting.

It manages to make me chuckle most of the time and there's enough mystery in what's going to happen that I'm intrigued about where the story will go. The art is great.

The only thing I actually don't like are the little comments below every page. I hate it when any webcomic does that shit.

I don't get the praise for her art.

The colors and characters are cute, but it comes off looking bland and sometimes hard to follow. My eyes inadvertently skim the text instead of focusing on the drawings, since they all look the same. Some expressions are lost in the roundness of the characters. Using higher contrast between light and dark and having some edges and blocky shapes would make the comic easier to follow while still retaining the cuteness possible.
