The design is a little silly. When I first saw it I was disappointed. I was hoping for something more badass and memorable.

It's been brought up before how first-time fusions like pic related and Malachite seem to be messy looking, but something I think is important and haven't seen mentioned is that Smoky is a fusion born out of Steven's and Amethyst's shared sense of self-hatred. They both feel that they're disappointments and aren't nearly as good as they should be, which is reflected to the viewer through SQ's design, since it seems to be that Steven's and Amethyst's opinions on themselves line up with the common opinion on the fusion's appearance.

you've got to wonder how different this smoky quartz is from the other smoky quartz formed by rose. From garnet and pearls reactions you can assume they'd never met a similar smoky quartz before. And in terms of the weapon the other smoky quartz would have to have had a completely different weapon because pearl and garnet/sardonyx didn't understand the yo-yo and didn't know it could grapple. The only other explanation is if amethyst and rose never fused which seems quite unlikely but maybe that's what happened.

I think it's implied that Rose and the CGs met Amethyst after the war or towards the end of it. She's the youngest gem and is never shown in war flashbacks, plus she was all alone when she woke up in her Kindergarten, which implies it was defunct for a while.

My guess is he doesn't have any strong feelings about his gender or his identity is not as established in comparison. Connie's pretty cofident and mature for her age, Amethyst kinda filled the older sibling position. So maybe they could override this aspect of the fusion with their identity. Maybe fusing with a Gem who appears more indifferent towards her gender might create a more masculine fusion (A Pearl or Peridot fusion could end up like this).

Fusion stands more for relationships in general, who can be strictly platonic, or course also sexual. But the connection between to individuals can be very nuanced and unique and fusions are a nice way to express that.
