First they retconned Rocket, and I didn't see the big deal. For I was not a Mantlofag.

Then they retconned Star Lord, and I didn't see the big deal. For I was not an Englefag.

Then they retconned Infinity Gauntlet...

I'm sorry for my callousness, Cosmic fans of /co/. I see the big deal now. This is such a shitty feeling.
>>
See, I'm the opposite. I'm an Englefag and I threw an absolute shitfit when Bendis went back and retconned Quill's origin. Swore off anything to do with Star-Lord in the comics after that. Rallied around every cry of "NOT MUH" I heard.

A few years later and I realized that of all the important stuff I actually need to give a shit about in life, comic book continuity is not among them. And when I go back and reread those stories, they will always be as I remember them. And with the sliding timeline, time-travel, and universe-restructuring events that happen every other year, it doesn't even bother me from an in-universe perspective anymore either. Through the efforts of autistic No-Prize seekers everywhere I have been freed from the shackles of continuity.

This Gamora issue was pretty good for how obviously movie-inspired it was. Either way, it's hardly Gunn's fault.

Mostly I'm salty about the sheer neglect of canon.
Rocket & Star Lord's origins had such a minor effect on the overarching Marvel Universe that, even when I read the stories thereafter, I didn't see them as important omissions.
Nebula being a big fat PHOOONY was fucking focal to one of Marvel history's most iconic comic stories. The entire payoff to Infinity Gauntlet, the very mechanism by which Deus gets machina'd, happened because she'd lied about her connection to Thanos.
You can twist a thing here & there and blame Reed, sure, but THIS WASN'T SOMETHING THAT NEEDED TWISTING IN THE FIRST PLACE. Her presence isn't even necessary, Gamora could've done what she did by herself. What's worse is that apparently Perlman claims to have read all of Starlin's old shit as research. The scene with the doll is a callback to a Starlin story so hidden that I didn't even know it existed. HOW DO YOU INCLUDE THROWBACKS TO SOMETHING THAT OBSCURE BUT FUCK UP THIS?

I hear you, and it's definitely something I noticed while reading. I just don't really care anymore unless it's like, Starlin or somebody writing. I guess it's because the details of Infinity Gauntlet aren't really relevant to contemporary stories anymore. For the sake of the current little "bubble," the only thing that's hard canon is that Thanos gathered the stones some years back and used them to kill half the universe for a while. And by that same token, these new stories don't have any effect on the already existing "bubble" during which Infinity Gauntlet was written and relevant. That is the bubble in which you go back and read the story anyway as Infinity Gauntlet has yet to be revisited.

I find placing eras into little overlapping bubbles like that really helped sate my autism. (Aside from just not worrying about it altogether I guess.) The sliding timeline is honestly such a stupid concept that its very existence makes retcons inevitable anyway.

And if none of that helps, let's just say that the Beyonders are fans of the MCU and like adjusting the comic universe to match.

Usually the different bubbles only update historical checkpoints though. e.g. Vietnam -> Gulf -> Afghanistan.
That's all the change the Sliding Timeline necessitates. Besides like, two or three character's natural life expectancies.

Sure, all I'm saying is retcons in the current bubble simply aren't enough to piss me off anymore. The old bubbles still exist (perhaps not within the 616 canon at this point but you know what I mean) and stories are always most relevant within the bubble they are conceived in. Writers, both good and bad, have been playing fast and loose with the canon for awhile now anyway.

Nebula made a pretty big splash in the GOTG movie, people liked her and she's apparently coming back in a bigger way in the sequel. So while it kinda caught me off guard, a Perlman-penned series about Gamora's youth including an MCU-influenced version of Nebula isn't that surprising.

Basically, I'm just past the point where continuity errors like this are enough to make me drop a book. Nor do I feel like they devalue the old stories for me either. I don't know if it works for you but it's been helping me enjoy Marvel a lot more without feeling like the world depends on continuity.

Don't suppose you're reading Ultimates^2 atm?

Ultimates 2? Not as of yet. I read the first few issues of Ultimates but took a break when CWII reared its ugly head. Guess I should catch up.

IG is from 1991, Nebula had had that Thanos delusion since before that Avengers arc with Spider-man where everything disappeared and the FF arc where she obliterates Xandar, when we knew from Kang that she probably wasn't actually related to Thanos. Should I call you a casual?

I thought the tie-in stuff was pretty good, everyone commended it on fixing various plot holes from the main event.
Anyway, yeah, the new series has gone full cosmic and Bendis stuck the GotG on Earth so further event buggery's unlikely. We're only 2 issues in but if it's going where the foreshadowing implies its going it's worth your while getting in on the monthly storytimes.

I've read those Avengers issues too, senpai. My point is covered >>88689628. Nebula being a charlatan was important to IG, it started a sequence of events that snowballed all the way to the climax. Now, she isn't. Which fucks IG's narrative right up. Something's got to give.
And that's not even bringing the bald cyborg stuff into it.
