This year was the 80th anniversary of The Phantom, one of the first superheroes, and often described as a transitional figure between pulp heroes and superheroes.
To celebrate this, I'm going to be posting one or two phantom comics, so enjoy! ( and let me know if you're reading)

First, a little explanation of the character.
Cool!

Now, onto the story, this one is titled 'The Wolf who Cannot Die' and centers around The Phantom's trusty lupine companion, Devil!

Also, for any Australians out there. the Frew Phantom comics have really picked up lately and are worth getting into, they're being more adventurous and sometimes even print in colour, while still being far far cheaper than Marvel and DC.

By the way, does The Phantom have much of a presence in America, there's been a long history of Phantom comics here in Australia.

Unfortunately I think that Billy Zane movie ruined it for us Americans. Still I love a good story time and I'm reading along. Thanks for posting.

I liked that movie when I was a kid, I remember being horrified by the trick microscope which had blades that shot up from the lens when people looked in it.

So what's the idea behind wearing the tights?

Because it looks cool I guess.

He blends into the shadows. Lee Falk wanted the suit be grey, but it ended up being purple for some reason I can't remember. Here in Finland, he wears blue instead.

Because blue doesn't stand out in the jungle at all. Seems to work out fine for him though.

>These are the only two occasions in the daily strip, prior to the start of the Sunday strip, where the colour of the Phantom's costume is directly stated - and that colour is not purple! Lee Falk originally considered calling his character The Gray Ghost but settled on The Phantom, because he liked that title better (Comics Revue #27, 1988). With this in mind, it is not surprising that he stuck with the idea of a gray costume. In selecting a gray costume, Lee says he was "thinking of some kind of camouflage." (Official Phantom Movie web page)
>With the commencement of the Sunday strip in the American newspapers, the Phantom's costume was inexplicably coloured purple by an anonymous King Features colorist, and has continued this way ever since. Lee Falk was surprised by this modification of his creation: "They didn't consult me. They just made it purple, much to my amazement"

And that's the end of 'The Wolf who Cannot Die'. Is anyone still around? If so, I'll consider digging up another issue to storytime.
I like how nobody in this story was really evil. The wolves were just hungry and while the hunter dudes were selfish dicks, they did technically have some good intentions too.
I loved reading The Phantom as a kid in the 80's, visiting relatives in Yugoslavia.
He was fucking badass and not a weakass pussy.

Sweet! I fucking love Jim Aparo. Best Batman artist.
thanks for storytiming this. my only prior Phantom exposure was the Phantom 2040 animated series. it was pretty good overall, but got a little wonky in some areas.
