Last year on this day I storytimed Pyongyang - A Journey in North Korea by Guy Delisle, this year I'm doing it again.

A biographical comic about a French Canadian Animation director, his life living and working in North Korea for two months. His struggles with the difficulties of outsourcing and the bureaucracy of a totalitarian closed state.

Gather round because the storytime's about to start.

>New Regency was working on a film version of Pyongyang, with Steve Conrad to write the script and Gore Verbinski to direct the film, and to star Steve Carell, but this was canceled in December 2014 in the wake of threats made by hackers believed to be tied to North Korea to movie theaters over the film The Interview, which mocks the North Korean regime. The film started pre-production in October 2014, and at the time of cancellation was still without a title. New Regency revealed that the scheduled distributor, Fox, cancelled their participation in the project after the incidents with The Interview.

For something like Pyongyang, it wouldn't work as live-action.
It should be done as animation, like Persepolis was.

I have a hard time understanding why foreigners in North Korea have such a hard time with trying not to cause unnecessary trouble. It always seems to happen.

I get the slip ups, but intentionally taking photos, sneaking out on their own, asking questions they know can't be answered, and generally antagonizing people seems like a dick move.

If I had to be there, I certainly wouldn't want to risk Nork prison, nor would I want to get my handlers and their whole families sent to the mines where they have to paint the stone black and pretend it's coal.
>>
>>88686145
It's a personality thing. I wouldn't do it either.
I friend of mine asked her grandma about her sex life as a teenager. WHY? Sometimes more social people act more autistic than introverts like me.

I think NK tourists are either clueless or want the James Bond experience. They want to brag to their friends about how brave they are. They probably don't get any trouble but the NK guy next to them will.
>>
>>88686285
Well that guy who tried stealing a poster got in trouble. But the norks made him into a huge propaganda ordeal, most tourists get away with minor stuff from what I know.

Even if they ended up just fine, it still obviously had them scared stiff at times.

Even if they agree with the author's views, they certainly can't safely indicate it. So why antagonize them? Why ride their asses about shit that obviously isn't in the cards? Why give purposefully pointed answers to their questions? Why give potential "subversive materials" to your handler? What do these people going to North Korea have to gain by toeing the line like they do?

Just show up, smile and nod, say what they want to hear, ask them to pretty please not destroy your slovenly pig capitalist nation, get paid for your work and leave.

The same reason anything is outsourced, it's cheap. Also some countries are more lax in their willingness to do business with NK.

Most folks would already be exposed to that kind of thing illegally anyway. There's a boom in the selling of black market dvds, where pirated American and South Korean shows and movies are sold regularly. People who buy those are much higher risk than the ones with books.

Oh fug I work at a chicago area liquor store and this just hit me hard. I recommend that shit to people who don't know about cagnac trying to give a cognac lover an ok gift within their prove range. It's like how Johnny Walker Blue Label is the de facto gift of Asian business men to their bosses even though it's horribly over priced and I could recommend a dozen better bottles for less. Oh man this is the moment where it hit me hard.

Thank you so much for the story time. I've loved it.
>>
>>88686285
Because if you're an honest person who doesn't have a hard time opening up about things you want to know how other people feel about things. It's natural like that. You just want to know their perspective and you want others to be as open and honest as you. That's why people tend to like extroverted people. They genuinely want to know your perspective.
>>
>>88683225
Loved the last storytime.

Appreciated being introduced to this comic.
>>
>>88688292
You didn't watch the videos. There are people dying of starvation. Have you visited any Asian city? I went to Xian China as a 19 year old and it blew my mind. They were obsessed with Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan and loved hearing that I was from Chicago just because they knew the Bulls. They were amazed that I could dance and sing and pick other women up like they were nothing. Like oh wow a girl can pick up another girl? They literally didn't know of weight lifting so I showed them some lifts while using my Chinese friend as a weight. Simple stuff like squats and deadlifts. They were fucking astounded. I was even spat on by a chubby cigarette smoking Chinese dude for being a white blonde woman. The Chinese girls I was with were way more offended than me and were incredibly upset when I didn't even give a shit.

If China cam be that strange I can't even imagine North Korea. Hell, in China the high ways were immaculate with hardly another car and there were people sweeping them for no fucking reason. It was so strange. This is entirely believable and if you have any self confidence you'll find yourself asking the same questions.
>>
>>88698938
Oh, and I was told by my guide, who happened to be the stepmother of my friend who got me to Xian in the first place that the high ways were owned by the local factories. This was when all the info about people committing suicide at Chinese factories was a thing, with them installing nets to catch them and all. So apparently the conditions in those factories was so poor that people were killing themselves but the companies could still afford hiring women to sweep the highway clean every day. Fucking insane.

This comment is dumb. It makes me mad, but I need to stop and realize that this is pretty typical coming from an American.

I can't read this comment and not think that you spent your entire time looking down on people with the perception that they weren't as "civilized" as you were. The only reason any of them showed interest in you at all was because you were an alien curiosity. No shit they know what lifting is, they just found it compelling to see some white bitch do it.

Xian is a MASSIVE city, and it's clear that the local government has been putting massive amounts of fuck you money into infrastructure development for decades. For reference, when i lived there 20 years ago, even in the slummy neighborhood I was in, there was already a KFC and a 5 story mall down the street selling Nintendos. Even back then, it was about as developed as Spokane, though not as well developed as New Jersey. Even so, big cities in China like Xian have been commercialized for decades now. Unless you were 19 in the 80s, I just can't see how you could have such an inflated ego about things. I've been skyping with my family there since skype came out for fuck's sake and you think LIFTING is impressive?
>>
Thanks for the storytime. Years back, this was probably the first storytime I read on /co/, and the discussion was so great and thoughtful. One of my favorite /co/ memories. It was also the first gift I ever received from a /co/ Secret Santa thread, so this book has a special place in my heart. Always enjoy giving it another go.

I agree with comments upthread about DeLisle kind of being an asshole, but I like how in this and his other travelogues he doesn't really make himself into some kind of perfect being. He seems to know and acknowledge his behavior, which is something a lot of people might not.

You've never had a group of Chinese girls gush at something stupid you did. I was going to hip hop dance lessons with my friend. They didn't even charge me because I was a novelty. Fun times. Don't get me wrong, China is a great place but man some of the things like sweeping a mostly empty high way come off as rather strange. It was interesting to see that they did that in North Korea as well.
>>
>>88705974
I tried so hard to find a gym whole I was there with free weights. It isn't a thing. The one I did find had a pitiful selection and hardly anyone was ever there.

What crawled up your ass and died? The people were incredibly friendly except that one spitting asshole. Hell, I never said anything about the place being shabby or backwards, just that there were some things that struck me as strange. Like how many people just littered everywhere, throwing their trash wherever they pleased. There were guys whose job it was to pick up that litter. Kind of ridiculous. But no, making that observation makes me a typical loud rude American.

I wouldn't´t call it "madman".
Many parts of 1984 only works because the reader has Fluency in how A Western Society works.
From literature, "the free press", election systems, and such.

1984 is in many more ways a highlight and a critic of social trends, than a real satire of a banana republic.

All 5 of those isn´t gommie mandatory.
You can even have those in hardcore capitalist states.

Newspeak and doublethink is standards in commercials and spreads of product information.
Newspeak is a special kind of standard, even if 1984 takes it to new heights

Fake opposition generally has to be banned, just like diluted fake opposition(brand names, "generic brand", etc)

The last 2 is "normal" as a part of the human condition.

They are in awe because they think foreigners are impressive. White people have an easier time in China because they are white. Police will be more lenient when you break the law, hooking up is much easier because 'dating a foreigner' is way up on the list of things that make you posh in China(and also subsequently lead to Chinese men of accusing foreigners of stealing all the available women), and people will be almost nauseatingly polite around you. Essentially because you aren't Chinese, you are like some delicate flower and having one nearby is like an unofficial status symbol.

example: /co/ anon from a while back who shared his stories of being an office pet: A white guy getting a paid position in a Chinese company to sit in a chair and be white.

Which in turn lead to /co/ creating a series of ideas for a drama series, but point being.
