I don't know that he's overstayed his welcome, but I do think he's gotten a little overused and it feels like they use him almost exclusively for comedy now. Plus his appearances have tended to become formulaic- Ezra tells the crew there's a mission to get/do something, turns out it's Hondo, everyone groans but goes along with it, things work out for everyone except Hondo who is slightly screwed out of what he wanted but manages to at least break even.

Sentience isn't a function of memory. Some droids, especially Protocol Droids, have added mental functionality, higher level programming that gives them true sentience. The mind wipes keep them from growing beyond certain parameters, though it is also often tactical. They even are supposed to do this to astromechs but, well, Anakin never bothered with Artoo. Almost bit him on the ass once.

It's a question of growing beyond the limitations of their programming, which the owners see as bad when that limitation is "be loyal to me". That "individuality" is more typically quirks and downright malfunctions and has led to the creation of a murder droid on more than one occasion. Sometimes the intent was a murder droid to begin with but now he is his own boss: then you have IG-88.

The idea is that the three laws are universally programmed into all robots as part of their design. By their very nature they absolutely have to obey those laws because they're programmed to, which is what makes them safe.

In theory, at least. As the others mentioned, the stories usually involve one or more laws being violated.

Forms are cool, but the issue is how certain ones counter others and such. Its hard to show in movies or animation because they're based on actual weapon practices, such as Dooku's elegant rapier made for dueling. Hard to show while also still being Jedi/Sith lightsaber based.

Forms are a cool idea but we never see actual differences. Dooku's the first time we really see a visibly different style. Even Obi-Wan is supposed to be the "defensive" style but I don't feel like he's shown using it drastically different than anyone else.

Lightsabers are typically used to block blast bolts and when two Jedi do go up against each other there's never any kind of style to it.

That's one reason I like the duel in ANH. Old Alec looks stiff but in my headcanon it looks more like Obi-wan has given up on flashy spinning blocks and is just trying to cut Vader right in his fucking face

The issue is that Form III, IV, and V are all very similar to each other, especially III and V since V is basically III but with IV's offense (but no acrobatics).

Donna la Sinestra (which I spelled wrong stupidly) is called the Woman's Left Guard. Its basically the stance of Ataru with the blade pointing forward, its made to guard primarily your right side holding the sword and to make quick thrusts and counters.

Zenchairo Mazana is the Boar's Tooth Guard, where the sword is more hanging behind you in an initial stance, but its made to defend the left side of you, but its primarily used to match your opponent's offense with a timed guard. Its not an offensive minded sword style, its mainly so there is no physical threat to you and you can still occasionally thrust. Think sort of like fencing in a way, but not on the level of say Dooku.

Those two combined have an added sense of pure guard in order to encapsulate a seemingly perfect defense. Though in real life they're meant to be coupled together with other variants of the styles for a rounded picture.

No, I just have a lot of time on my hands to try and figure out what the Lightsaber Forms were roughly based off of realistically.

Those basically come from a guy, whose name escapes me right now that learned to experiment with longswords in an effort to see just how logical guards would actually work. Its basically called the 12 Guard Styles, which some can be broken up into the other Forms if you wish.

Like originally in ANH for instance, a lot of it was based on Kendo and Fencing together. Whereas now that we know more about the Forms themselves and how they work and their stances, they have a little more added depth to them to understand where they come from a little better and how they actually adapt.

I don't know how I personally feel about Lightsabers having weight to them honestly. OT or not, it just feels odd. Its cool as fuck no doubt, but knowing the Force it just odd that something like that wouldn't be so light weighted, swords themselves weren't typically all that heavy honestly.

I sort of like the way Rogue One handled it, where it seems to have some weight to it, but its also a bit weightless and fluid. I think that is a nice compromise. TCW and Rebels seems to do that at times too, but less so on the weighty side. My headcanon was that since Kylo's saber is literally so unstable it's discharging energy out the sides that perhaps there's actual resistance and it requires a lot more effort to swing it which is why he has more cleaving strikes. I like the duels myself, but not the intense weight of some of the shots. Kylo using Vader's style was great, and he quickly learned that it guards the middle and not the sides (because Vader had to) and Kylo can't utilize it without the prosthetic enhancements properly.

That was well done.

But like, we'll use TR8R and Finn for instance. Finn was like reeling backwards from the blows he was exchanging on sort of a ridiculous level. Like I get some stuff is heavy, but that shouldn't be happening to that extent.

Personally its what I liked about them being weightless in the PT, is that the bit of light weighs nothing, as it really should, so getting it knocked away/countered wasn't a big deal since you didn't rear back, but it means you have to adjust for the weightlessness of it and actually plan accordingly to how you're going to have offense and defense.

Like in TFA sometimes they feel too much like swords, which I get is the point, but its a bit just too much I find personally. Like they're too grounded in reality, but also weight twice as much as a real sword sometimes.
