Almost happened, actually. Disney wanted to make one around the time of Operation Overdrive.

Never got off the ground. So next they tried to force Toei to make Super Sentai less violent. Toei told them to fuck off.

So they just said fuck it and cancelled the whole thing, making the remastered MMPR because Bandai begged them. When Saban wanted the IP back they couldn't give it away fast enough.

Super Sentai, and by extension Power Rangers, works because it's a live action show. It's been going consistently since the 70s and is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture like a lot of Shotaro Ishinomori's properties.

Would anyone watch a Power Ranger series Directed by the creator of the Daredevil Netflix series? The show is of course darker and grittier, where the rangers are at least in college and the group has to balance school life, Ranger responsibilities, and each ranger's personal lives are showed. I would watch it if the effects in the show are good and the show actually addresses the damage done from the zord fights and the mystery of the Ranger groups themselves.

Kids like Power Rangers for the same reasons they like WWE: violence and perceived realism. The fact that it's live-action rather than animated lends it authenticity in their eyes, which is why a lot of movie spin-offs of cartoons take the live-action route too. Making Power Rangers animated would rob it of one of it's strongest advantages over cartoons.

They're perceived as less violent though, because it's teenagers involved in primarily unarmed combat. When kids play Star Wars they make lightsabre noises, when they play Power Rangers they punch and kick each-other. Same as with the WWF, in the 90s there was a huge scare amongst schools and parents about kids hurting themselves and each-other imitating all the flying kicks and shit. Some countries had to air a disclaimer before the show explaining that the actors were stuntmen and you weren't to copy their moves at home. Marvel and Star Wars are much more fantasy-grounded than Power Rangers, so they're mostly considered less influential, or at least less dangerously so. Although the exception to that is the omission of the Human Torch from the old Fantastic Four cartoon because the networks thoughts kids would watch him and set themselves on fire.

This is a popular myth, but not actually true. They were looking at making a solo Human Torch movie and didn't want that connected to the cartoon.
