IMO the major improvement starting with Beauty and the Beast is that the male love interests are actual characters now. The prince in Snow White shows up at the end and kisses her after the dwarves did all the dirty work. Prince Charming was too lazy to look for Cinderella himself, but let his father send the duke out. Philip was the only one who actually did something important. From Beauty and the Beast onwards, the male and female leads of a romance story are pretty much equals in terms of screen time and character development.

I honestly wish it was just a little slower and paced better, also would've been cool as fuck to see more monsters/obstacles on their journey.

I watched it last night.

I actually enjoyed "Inner Workings" more than Moana. Inner Workings had a clearer message of "don't waste your life being afraid of death." It had romance and canonical sex. The message resonated a lot more with me than Moana did. It makes me want to do something with my life, eat pancakes, go in the ocean, quit my lousy job.

Moana's story was really nothing but a textbook example of "The Hero's Journey." Moana goes an an epic quest for treasure, meets a lovable superhero, fights some villains who have no character development, and saves the day. I've seen "The Hero's Journey" plenty of times, and most of them were done better than this.
