It's okay to be wrong sometimes but the humor in Kubo as a whole dropped flat. Every joke was safe, predictable stuff that's been seen and heard countless times in media and Beetle was there just to be a shitty comedic character outside of the shitty, predictable "twist" reveal to tell these jokes with.

She was probably WoY's weakest villain (writing-wise) yet she's the one who gets this big story-arc. She wasn't fun to watch or funny or even that threatening, if anything I found her pretty annoying. As far as I can tell we never got an explanation to why she looks so similar to Hater, which just makes her design seem lazy in a show full of great character designs.

Also, the whole romance subplot was just cringey.

Maybe if you're into the kind of humor that was in Kubo. I can only really applaud it for not delving into farts and random noises but what it did have wasn't much better at doing its job. I watched it with my sister who laughs at pretty much anything and we groaned in unison at every attempt at comedy in the film. It's a shame since i really wanted to like Kubo and whilst the animation and visuals were amazing, the basic, predictable plot and flat comedy really put a downer on it. Still, not quite as forgettable as Boxtrolls though.

I really blame Sarah Silverman's absolutly godawful VA work. It's like she started chain smoking halfway through the movie. A lot of the scenes where she was supposed to sound sorrowful or melancholy just came out grating and whiny.

I think they said in the commentary that the gargoyles were supposed to be all in Quasimodo's head. But they stretched it too much when they showed the gargoyles fighting soldiers at the end. What really bogged it down would be the part where they were singing.
