What's /co/'s opinion on this? Is it good?
>>
>>88599882
Yeah.
>>
yes, wasn't too big of a fan of the issue that came out yesterday thogh
>>
>>88599882
Storytime, please?
>>
>>88599897
What was wrong with it?
>>
>>88599911
story didn't really grip me, felt like I've read it a dozen times before
>>
>>88599904
I would, but I only have the cbr files. Sorry.

If anyone has it as separate images I'd be mighty grateful.
>>
>>88599882
Definitive Santa Claus story.
>>88599965
Because it's really hard to extract images? Fuck off.
>>
>>88599982
I don't really know how. Never storytimed before, to be honest.
>>
It's fucking fantastic, although Morrison claims he's never seen Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
>>
>>88600184
That seems kind of like bullshit, given the story.

>new book ends with the moral of "global warming has advantages"
Fucking Morrison, man.
>>
>>88599994
Change the .cbr extension into a .rar extension and you can extract it.

So you regularly read stories where Santa Clause escapes from decades of imprisonment in a crystal maze in the center of the moon to discover that his factory has been rebuilt and taken over by an ancient ice witch that is angry because global warming destroyed her domain and enslaved Gepetto to create an evil army of wooden ice puppet titans in order to destroy humanity and bring about another ice age?

I think that the larger portion of the art didn't do it any favors, at least in the beginning before real monsters and magic is showing up. Morrison writing is still Morrison writing, but the presentation of it definitely gives an "edgy" impression. I don't even dislike Mora's linework, which still retained a touch of cartoon expressiveness.
Really, it was the colour: it's like the colorist would continuously rely on "prestige tv" colors to cheaply assert that this was a story of merit; so lots of gray, white and everything else desaturated, unless Morrison expressly wanted something to be colorful, like his sleigh or the spirits.

To be fair, we're meant to understand that this is a dreary place that Klaus is saving, but the only bit of colour that even the supposed joy-bringer displays is a bit of red from his scarf. I'd almost get it if this was a standalone graphic novel and the color was saved for the end, but I had to wait a month or more for each installment, and the majority was just dreary

thread theme

lyrics translated from swedish:

Arntor, A Warrior

In Kaupanger the District Governors lived
Ivar Dape and another deceiver
Sworn to Sverre Sigurdsson
They collected taxes, excises and more fees.

The people of Sogndal only supported Magnus
Erlingsson, not the deceiver King Sverre.
The King was afraid to lose Sogn to Magnus the true kingsson.

Close to Christmas 1183
The Governor-filth demanded extra taxes to
Christmas celebrations for themselves and some others.
The bloodbath was about to happen.

Led by Arntor from Kvåle together with Isak
Torgilsson and the sons of Arngeir the priest,
Gaute and Karlshead.

These brave men from Sogndal,
Eide and Kaupanger went against the Governor scum on
Christmas eve angry and full of hate.

The wiseapple Ivar Dape asked for peace
Arntor and his men proclaimed war.
But after the axe his head chopped off,
there wasn’t much peace left in this chest.

Past midnight the killing of thieves, crocks,
servants and Ivar Dape was done.
The celebration of Christmas in Sogndal began.

Somehow I doubt Grant would want to write a biography on St. Nicholas. It's be really cool if Klaus tied into his origin, though.

It doesn't need to be a 1:1 biography, but it would have been nice if Morrison added more than a few cursory elements from the actual Saint Nick rather just make some Conan Santa wannabe.
>>
>>88616620
I suspect he might in the future. I think this is a character he wants to run with for a while since he wrote up another story. Witch of Winter showed he wanted to include a few more elements of the mythos, so it'd feel right to give the actual Nicholas more room to breathe in a future comic.

>>
>>88619182
The comic itself barely has anything to do with Christmas outside of some window dressing. It would be like if I wrote a horror thriller comic based on the Easter except the only things I actually use from the holiday is bunnies and colored eggs.
>>
>>88619027
Yea and the only criticism being made is "this idea is dumb because"
It's not like wither side has a chance of changing the others opinion.
Taking the concept of Santa Claus and making him this medieval swashbuckling warrior is kinda silly, yea, and if that turns you off completely then sorry, I cant help you. I just feel that the story being coupled with some details that flesh out the characters and setting and really fantastic artwork make the idea work.
>>
>>88619254
I'm not going to get angry over you liking it or anything, just stating my opinion in a thrad asking for opinions and getting shouted at for daring to voice something outside of the consensus. I just find the concept extremely trite and the writing exceptionally weak from someone like Morrison. The characters are also rather generic and there's very little to them that elevates them beyond anything I've seen a thousand times before. Honestly, the only saving grace to the comic is the art. In the end, Klaus is just another generic action comic which is kind of disappointing coming from Morrison.

Well, and I'm sure you'll hate hear this, but that's just, like, your opinion, man.

> It doesn't even really tackle Santa Claus' pre-commercialized roots and just makes him a generic Conan with a Santa theme.

Grant is basically doing what he did with Batman and Superman. This Santa takes after quite a lot of Christmas and proto-Christmas stuff. There's Saturn and his Saturnalia and the Roman Mystery Cults in his powerup by coming close to death. There's also a bit of Odin in there, as it should be-Yule was his festival. He also stuck in a lot of Superman and Batman cues.

The Christian side of Santa was really the only side he didn't touch, unless you count some general Moses/Jesus motifs in the story.

In other words kys. There's 0 Conan in this.

>>
>>88633834
He has very little similar with ANY incarnation of Santa and you know it. He has more similarities with Conan than Santa, hence Conan Claus. Hell, even Krampus is nothing like his folklore outside of being some evil demon looking thing. Morrison just went with the generic Santa vs. Krampus thing I've seen nearly every gritty Christmas take do at some point. Krampus was actually a companion of Saint Nicholas.
>>
>>88633945
>Very little similar with any incarnation

He actually has a LOT in common with Life and Adventures of Santa Claus Santa even down to the "made immortal by elves and friend to wild animals" stuff. Grant took that Santa and added elements from Santa Claus is coming to town, Saturn, Moses, Jesus, Batman, and Superman.

He has absolutely nothing in common with Conan. Please point to where's he's a cunning rogue stealing from wizards or a sullen king or screwing tavern wenches.

>Even Krampus is nothing like his folklore

He's kiddie ghost rider. He was always kiddie ghost rider. Grant just made him Santa's enemy to stress that this Santa is the "gives gifts to kids' type and not the "punish the naughty" type. See the "All kids are Good!' scene.
>>
>>88634067
>He actually has a LOT in common with Life and Adventures of Santa Claus Santa even down to the "made immortal by elves and friend to wild animals" stuff.
Maybe some of the cursory elements, but he essentially removed any conventional depictions that were also there. I don't see where you keep getting Saturn or Moses though. I can see the Batman and Superman elements though, Morrison essentially turned Santa into a shitty cape character. The Conan thing is a joke since he's essentially a sword wielding barbarian that fights demons and has more similarities with Conan than Santa.

As for Krampus, I'm just a bit peeved that Morrison clearly doesn't understand his folklore and went the easiest route in depicting him as just another demon thing. It was refreshing to see that horror film remember that he's there to teach a lesson rather than just be a simple monster.

Being a big shaman dude that lives in the woods and talks to spirits is cursory? That's a pretty big thing.

>Removed any conventional depictions that were also there

Workshop at the North pole, flies a sleigh, gives presents to kids at Yuletime, has elf friends. It's Santa.

>Saturn or Moses

Saturnalia was about the return of Saturn. It was a bout a temporary return of the ever-lasting spring-time of the Titans during the darkest part of the year. Saturn essentially got to go out of Tartarus and party for a little bit. He's a guy with a big white beard that follows the descent into the underworld motif of the Roman Mystery Cults that also crops up in Odin's stories (hung himself from a tree to gain wisdom, also has a big white beard). Klaus dying and coming back references this.

The Moses stuff is even more obvious-people's champion, kicked out of his homeland, wanders in the outlands, comes back and wrecks shit with stuff God taught him. It's not very Christmasy like the Odin and Saturn references but its there.

>I can see the Batman and Superman elements, Morrison essentially turned Santa into a shitty cape character.

Superman and Santa both tap into the same "Roman Mystery Religion Sun God" stuff. The Batman stuff is just there because Grant likes Batman.

>Has more similarities with Conan than Santa

Except that's horribly wrong. He's a hodge-podge of Santa elements and the only Conan-esque think he's done is cut off the Krampus' head. That's literally it. If that's enough for you to scream Santa Conan then so be it, but that's petty in the extreme.

>As for Krampus

He's using Krampus to make a point about Santa-that he should be more of a benevolent friend to all children then a punisher who uses the Krampus to do the dirty work. It's like how God and Satan are friends until the writer decides to really write God in good-guy mode, then they're arch enemies.

>Clearly doesn't understand his folklore

Have you read Nameless and The Invisibles? Grant Morrison is like that dude from Disney's Atlantis. He knows this shit. He knows the Krampus, he's just doing a blend of Santa-lore instead of directly adapting a single source.

Lovecraftian Krampus was the funniest reveal ever.

>Being a big shaman dude that lives in the woods and talks to spirits is cursory? That's a pretty big thing.
He's less of a Shaman and more of a survivalist. Most of the supernatural stuff is interacting without him seeking it.

>Workshop at the North pole, flies a sleigh, gives presents to kids at Yuletime, has elf friends. It's Santa.
He flies a sleigh with wolves and the elves are more like aliens than Christmas elves. And before you say it, yes, they resemble some depictions of elven folklore but nothing that has been remotely involved with Santa Claus.

>Saturn
That's a bit of a stretch considering he doesn't have a big white beard in this depiction. Maybe the Santa Claus myth has taken some inspiration from Saturn but this particular depiction doesn't really have this inspiration. I could easily say the resurrection stuff is related to Jesus for instance. Same with Moses.

>Except that's horribly wrong. He's a hodge-podge of Santa elements and the only Conan-esque think he's done is cut off the Krampus' head. That's literally it. If that's enough for you to scream Santa Conan then so be it, but that's petty in the extreme.
He's a borderline sword and sorcery barbarian-esque sword wielding hero. I've never heard of a depiction of Santa sounding anything like that. He might not match some of the specific elements of Conan, but he's essentially a Christmas themed 'Conan', hence Conan Claus.

>He's using Krampus to make a point about Santa-that he should be more of a benevolent friend to all children then a punisher who uses the Krampus to do the dirty work. It's like how God and Satan are friends until the writer decides to really write God in good-guy mode, then they're arch enemies.
I still say it's a lazy and boring depiction that almost everyone else uses and brings nothing new or different to the table.

>Less of a shaman
>Literally summoning spirits with Morrison's 5-D thought form harmonics

Get real.

>And before you say it

He has more traditional elf friends in the Winter Queen story. And they're elves.

>Saturn
He and Odin make the "Old Father Christmas" image of Santa. This Santa is younger looking because to heighten his immortality-and to tie into the Life and Adventures depiction of Santa where hes mostly a young guy throughout the story.

>Resurrection stuff tied into Jesus and Moses

That's because Christmas as we know it is Odin worship+Saturn worship+Jesus worship+Coke worship. It's a lot of "fun shit to do while its fucking cold" celebrations from the Western World.

>Essentially a Christmas themed Conan.

Yes. The giving toys to children and making Christmas Miracles are totally Conan. Essentially Conan. Just add Christmas stories.

>Never heard of a depiction of Santa sounding anything like that.

Life and Adventures came close. It even had a giant battle between the forces of good and evil.

>Almost everyone else uses it

There was a rash of Krampus-sploitation films awhile back but I only remember one where he fought Santa.

Also, fun fact: The focus on poor miners is no accident. The Ore Mountains of Germany created many Christmas traditions, particularly the little wooden toys and nutcrackers and fancy decorations.

You're acting like he did that intentionally or that's what summoned them.

>He has more traditional elf friends in the Winter Queen story. And they're elves.
Which makes no sense considering the things in the original story already serving the role of the "elves"

>He and Odin make the "Old Father Christmas" image of Santa. This Santa is younger looking because to heighten his immortality-and to tie into the Life and Adventures depiction of Santa where hes mostly a young guy throughout the story.
My problem is that he stays as that young immortal guy that doesn't resemble Santa at all.

>Yes. The giving toys to children and making Christmas Miracles are totally Conan. Essentially Conan. Just add Christmas stories.
And I totally remember Santa being this buff dude that wields a sword and fights demons.

>Life and Adventures came close. It even had a giant battle between the forces of good and evil.
It's been a while since I've watched the adaption, but I don't remember Santa physically taking part in fights all that much.

>There was a rash of Krampus-sploitation films awhile back but I only remember one where he fought Santa.
I remember there being a couple comics and movies that dealt with Santa fighting Krampus.

It was too straightforward of a Morrison book for me to enjoy.

Everyone is aware he is working on a new origin for Jesus, right? Hopefully we get a crossover.
>>
He has a sword. Exactly like Conan! He makes toys. Exactly like Conan! He delivers presents. Exactly like Conan! He has a magic flying sleigh. Exactly like Conan! He does magic. Exactly like Conan! He consorts with Christmas Elves. Exactly like Conan!

What if... Conan was the real Santa all along?
>>
>>88638465
He has a pet wolf and wolves to drive his sleigh. Exactly like Santa! He's a buff guy with a short black beard. Exactly like Santa! He's a hunter who uses a magic sword to fight demons. Exactly like Santa! He's an immortal warrior that fights people on the moon. Exactly like Santa!

You act like people can't add shit to a story. Go play Bard and get your generic-ass Santa fix.
