He's in Batman: Gotham Knights #16 and #17.
Thanks.

>>88594718
>I'll storytime his first appearance next if anyone's still interested.
yes plz
>the reason Black Spider only appeared as a mercenary mook after this issue
You're forgetting the League of Shadows version. He was even in Young Justice.
>>88594718
This is the best thing I've read tonight and I'm sying this with my pull list next to me
People says 90's comics are needlessly edgy but this was a gritty drama and a serious social tragedy unlike today's comics that are just fanwankery. the flat lmited palette and the narration from a letter only make me like it even more.
bing on the next issue man.

This is issue #57, I think? If one of you guys has Sandman on hand, can you post a page with him? I can't find it on google.
>>88584724
I got this issue in a sand bucket that was given out by a hotel i stayed at as a kid.
>>88594747
>You're forgetting the League of Shadows version. He was even in Young Justice.
Uhhh, hate to call you casual, but YJ's version of Black Spider isn't "canonical". That is, he's accurate inasmuch as he's a mercenary, but I'm prrretty sure he never worked for the League of ASSASSINS (they were first called the League of Shadows in Batman Begins because obvsl Bruce would never join a group of self-described Assassins, and it found its way into YJ and eventually into the comics because I guess it sounds cooler.)
But then again, wikipedia tells me there was a third Black Spider I'd completely forgotten about, and tho there's no reference to him working with the League I honestly can't say I know for sure.
Anyway, this issues doubles as part of a Black Mask story arc, so Sionis fans, sit back and enjoy too!
>>88594882
Doug Moench is honestly my least favorite of the three writers who defined 90s Batman (Dixon and Grant being the other two), but I remember this story arc as avoiding most of my pet peeves with his writing... maybe it's because he created Back Mask, as the living embodiment of his simultaneously grim and very ARCH writing sensibilities, and I still find that way more interesting than just having him be a stock mob boss who happens to wear a mask.

>Uhhh, hate to call you casual, but YJ's version of Black Spider isn't "canonical". That is, he's accurate inasmuch as he's a mercenary, but I'm prrretty sure he never worked for the League of ASSASSINS
I get that. What I mean is that this specific version of Black Spider
>Black Spider was a member of the group of assassins known as the Council of Spiders. Black Spider came into conflict with Red Robin and was defeated.
is the same as the one in Young Justice. At least that's the impression I got when I watched it a few years ago.
>>88594972
I love the idea that the most powerful gang lord in Gotham City holds power through a mixture of cult of personality, and playing on Gothamites' eerie tendency to create new identities to "mask" themselves.
>>88595036
>>88595007
Oh... yeah I dunno, I didn't read very far into that run. I'll look into it, but it honestly just felt to me like Weisman wrote the role to give Josh Keaton a job, homage the comics he grew up with, and generally make supervillains more "believable" by treating them as hi-tech mercenaries. He did the same thing to Sportsmaster, basically.
>>88595142
See this? This shit? THIS is the Black Mask I know and love. All madness and pathos and purpose, while still being just plain cruel and greedy to show that despite the fact he believes his own propaganda, deep down, he's still just a schmuck named Roman who's still mad his parents didn't love him.
>>88595036
In a city full of psychotic supervillians, why not let every thug feel like he's a supervillian too?
>>88595182
...and uses a mannequin as his RealDoll.
>>88595182
ifind it weird that the red hood guy is the only writer in years to give me a good black mask story.
>>88595212
>>88595196
Yes, exactly. I love the idea that crime in Gotham City mutates into an increasingly over-the-top form of violent self-expression, replacing traditional organized crime with the madness of fanaticism. Maybe it comes from loving the Mutants in TDKR.
And, of course, some guys who just realize "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em"...
>Go to bed
>Read comics
I can't decide
just post faster
>>88595328
...like THIS asshole!
As much as I like the OG Black Spider, I fuckin' love Johnny LaMonica for being the polar opposite. He's just a petty, money-hungry schmuck who couldn't even be assed to come up with his own costumed identity, and doesn't
really get along with this newer, crazier breed of crook that runs Gotham. I hope Scott Snyder or somebody remembers Black Spider is supposed to be the most hilariously stereotypical greasy spaghetti-slurping mob hitman stereotype.

I need more alan grant on my life now
>>88595720
Fun Fact: Manny Terraro is one of the mob bosses introduced and killed off in the second Batman vs. Predator mini-series, the one with The Huntress! So yes folks, Batman vs. Predator is actually canon.

>>88595785
And just cuz it ties back into my point here,
>>88595744

>>88595811
Okay, I'm going the fuck to sleep
Night y'all
>>88595618
I'm not use to politicians supporting Batman, and the Commissioner opposing him.
>>88595803
This came out shortly after the Knightfall saga (that's also why Gordon is unsure about Batman, because nobody told him about Jean Paul), in which Alfred was horrified at how Bruce was pushing himself even as he healed from his injuries (he was on a mission to save his then-love-interest Dr. Shondra Kinsolving in the "Knightquest: The Search" tie-in arc), so he decided to quit because he couldn't in good conscience support his self-destructive efforts.
"Leaving... is all I have left to make you understand that you're not Batman anymore."
Anyone who said Alfred was out of character in The Dark Knight Rises is a pleb.
>>88595766
Could you post the other Johnny LaMonica stories?
>>88595886
>>88595886
I see, thanks for the explanation
>>88595916
>>88595781
I was intrigued by her too anon, but unfortunately the pay-off just wasn't worth it.She's just a garden variety celebrity stalker, and while I got way too much amusement out of her literally skulking in the bushes outside Wayne Manor and physically attacking Tim Drake when he asks "What the fuck are you doing, lady?", she ultimately just does the "if I can't have you, I'll kill myself!" cliche and then Bruce is caught by the police just as he finds her body, and we get a lame one-off story about him convincing the cops he DIDN'T kill her that's no Bruce Wayne: Fugitive, and let's face it, that story wasn't great to begin with. So yeah. At least we got a few more pages of DickBats out of it while Bruce was in holding.

Moench is the writer, Kelley Jones is the artist.
Jones is my favorite Batman artist, and issues like this highlight why.
>This building is nothing but a MASK covering its true nature - A HIDE-OUT FOR BLACK MASK
This on-the-nose stuff is partially why I'm not the biggest fan of Moench, despite his plotting being pretty good. Dixon should've told him that less is more.
>>88596380
>>88596365
Shit, you're right... I know that too, I'm just brainfarting from the neverending barrage of storefronts and sushi from Capcha. Still, my point stands... I get why he draws Batman with a crazy grin when interrogating crooks, but why Sarah of all people?
