Character Design Process in cartoons

Sometimes creators are not happy with their first choice.

MORE OFTEN, it's the producers are are picky and never satisfied, forcing creators to change again and again until they produce something "more marketable".

You don't just take the first idea and run with it, you work on it till it makes the best story.

Not even blind, she was just pitch as this tall 16 year old kid that was going to be a huge bully to the team. This was all Bryan's idea, Aaron pushed for a little blind girl to be a big tough bully for both humor that isn't mean spirited and a nice counter to Katira. Bryan rjected it at least twice before giving in he thought it was "to stupid" and "no one would like it"

I draw web comics and never change designs so frequently. Usually whatever comes to mind I draw then roll with that.

I don't think it would make much of a difference if Toph or Azula were guys. Except maybe there would be a lot less pornography.
From the sounds of it, the decision to change Toph from a man to a girl was not one that had teh story's quality in mind.
If we lived in a alt reality where this change never happened, Avatar probably would still be good.

You should plan ahead and design characters well before they appear so that you can keep stew over them. Even when I feel perfectly okay with a decision, I still find myself randomly changing my mind at time, whether it's character designs or which book to buy each month. Having more time just gives you a better chance of getting something you'll really love.

Some people want to tell the best story they can and make the characters look as good as they can be. Other times, the higher ups want something different than what you have in mind.

Surely you don't always go with the first design in your head do you? You can, but it might not always be the best idea.

Book 3 is is the only worthwhile season of LoK. It still has flaws but it's easily better than the rest of the show (especially Book 2, which is even worse than the first).

Nah, not really. She's stays a terrible character all the way through, never really learning or growing as a person. I sat through this shit show the entire time waiting for it to "get better". It never fucking does.

You can keep watching if you want to see for yourself, but the show just gets worse and worse. Just wait till the last season, that's actually SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT KORRA LEARNING ABOUT HERSELF AND ROLE AS THE AVATAR only to find out that the first Avatar ever was just as shitty, selfish, impulsive and shortsighted as she is! Well, that justifies everything!

Do you have a partner you do your comics with? Cartoons are a major collaborative project, so designs change based on feedback and input from other people.

You make lots of changes and variants and let it evolve, then pick the best one and go with it.

It's not just characters. This goes to any design. Early AT-AT concepts from Star Wars were treaded instead of walkers, to name a very visually impactful example.

It be weaker for a lot of reasons. The oldest ad tallest member of the team being bullish wouldn't come off that well, from what the interview explained it sounds like more of Bryan's fetish of an older male manipulating a younger girl (Kitara) and foiling to Sokka's "nerdiness" it would likely drag down the narrative more then help it because that would be either cringe to watch or just off putting.

Larger productions tend to be team efforts, so people contribute and critique the work until everyone is moderately satisfied with the outcome. There's also audience appeal to consider.
