The whole point is that he updated his robot so many times that only a true hero could stop it to begin with.

I don't think "being a dick" is quite the right choice of words. Yes, he was harsh on the kid, because the kid was too overbearing and couldn't take a hint. When his actions caused a supercrook to escape when he otherwise wouldn't have, he had gone from being an annoyance to deal with to a nuisance that was actively endangering himself and others.
