Gaston's a dick roughly the size of a barge.

At least Steele had the motivation that he was getting older and outclassed by other dogs, and he couldn't stand that. Accepting that you're getting older and growing out of your prime is hard. Doesn't excuse him trying to kill Balto, but it makes it easier to sympathize with the shit he was going through.

Gaston was the bigger dick, but the more likable. Steel was less of a dick, but more sympathetical. I made up that word.

Definitely Steele. Gaston was borderline not-villainous. If he didn't pull that shit with sending Maurice to an asylum he'd be a very sympathetic antagonist. Steele was just an asshole.

Gaston was at least partially motivated by going after a possibly dangerous beast.

Steele was only motivated by racism and his inflated ego.

Gaston's minions and leg wenches remained loyal to him through and through.

You know Steele is really bad when his minions and leg wenches turn against him.
