Sheer suddenness. There were no overtures of DaveKat at any moment in the story prior. Even up until the events of the RetCon, DaveJade was being teased - Dave and Karkat have lots of interactions as friends, and work amazingly well as antagonistic foils to each other, albeit in a somewhat friendly manner. Much of that energy has disappated in the conversations on the lilipad, and we're not really given anything to establish DaveKat as a romantic pairing beyond a few panels in Vriskagram, and that creates something of a sense of narrative blueballs for the various Dave pairings that HAD been teased (Jade/Dave, Dave/Terezi and to a much lesser extent Dave/Jane). Dave/Karkat was more out of the blue, where the prior subtext had not been anything more than platonic. My gaydar wasn't set off, and I suck more dick than Dirk at a Richard Nixon lookalike convention.

Part of the problem is that Hussie never shied away from giving us narrative cockteases in the past, but the unspoken promise was that these issues would be resolved at some point in the future. The ending did a really, really, bad job of tying off loose ends, complete with Davepetasprite looking at the camera and telling us about it was all part of a bigger story and just roll with it. I can't speak for the rest of the thread, but I've been reading MSPA as a livereader since the days of Problem Sleuth, and the amount of sheer time spent establishing DaveRezi in particular was staggering. It didn't work when Hussie nixed JohnVriska without ceremony, and it didn't work with Dave and Terezi, either. (continued fuck i am such a huge gay nerd for writing this shit)

Rosemary, while it functionally neutered those characters, is established in the text with interactions, and some snarky chemistry. DaveKat just had... Irritation? Plenty of fine and dandy belligerent bros, but romantic it wasn't.

The problem with Rosemary was less the relationship itself. It did a competent enough job of establishing that the characters were interested in each other, and the snarky-teeange-back-and-forth was very much reminiscent of my own AIM-era uncertain flirting.

The problem was that Hussie didn't have a plan of what to do with those characters after Cascade, and Rose, who had been one of the most proactive characters in the comic, became a wallflower. Kanaya had been gearing up to be interesting, too, after chainsawing Eridan in half, but, again, Hussie had no real plans for them, which is a shame, because Rose trying to actively thwart Sburb was one of the most interesting concepts in the comic. The romance didn't make them bad characters, the problem was that once they were removed from the story, all they had left was romance and sassiness.

This is a problem, but an entirely different one to DaveKat.

The relationship is defined by a single conversation, which also happens to be the conversation that essentially ruined Dave as a character in one of the most tone deaf character shifts I've ever seen. Prior to their relationship we see Dave and Karkat interacting in a believable and enjoyable manner, with proper levels of banter and mild antagonism, layered over a mutual respect. It fits their characters and rings true to how both of them interact with others.

Then, once the retcon possibly shifts them into butt buddies, that goes out the windows. Dave becomes this melodramatic, self indulgent douche nozzle like he was suddenly all the way back at the start of the comic, except with a pretension that is infinitely less amusing to watch, and Karkat is a self pitying waste of air. Their interactions with each other become mutated into a generic mush, the dynamic reduced to empty statements of "I care about him", the more character relevant aspects of how they interact completely discarded.

You can make Davekat not suck, but Hussie handled it with the same level of competency he displayed with Rosemary, except without any of the build up, and it was fucking awful.
