I would prefer animators adopt anime techniques rather than sloppily copying anime design.

-Go beyond squash and stretch, and begin to understand them as optical effects.
-Solid, consistent structural drawing.
-Modern cinematography that breaks away from 3/4 stage view.
-Linework that is clean but still full of organic life. (I'm looking at you, Cartoon Network.)
-Particle effects/physics. It's a big part of why their fight scenes look better.

...and so on. Just don't stop at the most superficial stuff.

Personally it varies, especially what anime you use. Like for example, my style is very reminiscent of early dragonball (half circles with dot eyes. and very stocky bodies.)
But it's rare that someone would point it out. Half the time my art gets compared to SU, Peanuts or Scott Pilgrim.

So it all depends on which features you take from anime and what inspires you. Not every anime looks like the "cliche" anime and not Every artist takes the same inspirations from anime.

The point in the first image was about anime, but in the second image the artist clearly states that the problem is in american cartoons and anime. While I don't see it as a legitimate argument regarding anime considering there aren't many races other than asian over in japan so it is completely reasonable that there wouldn't be a lot of non-asian protagonists, I agree with the person you replied to in that the artist is being proactive about representation of black people in cartoons instead of just bitching on tumblr or on /co/.

Spend 5 minutes with any modern anime, and you'll have shot set ups that play with perspective in ways you almost never seen in entire seasons of cartoons. But if you want something that pushes not only cinematography, but also film-like editing, check out Millennium Actress.

Here's an example of what you won't see often in anime, but is epidemic in western animation: every character in 3/4 view, facing left and right in a single shot. This doesn't happen in real life. Only stage actors stand this way.

That's actually not entirely true. Anime does it as well, just not quite as much, and tends to do a better job of hiding it.

In general, anime's better at hiding it's limitations, that's it's main strength. Though they're also much more willing to get dynamic than western shows.

It's not like no western shows have done that, though a lot of them are cgi. Take Tron Uprising or Beware the Batman, very interestingly shot and edited shows, though that was only possible because of their being cgi. Great fighting sequences for the same reasons.

It should be obvious from the context that we are discussing only 2D animation. CGI shows pretty much have to follow cinematic staging, because they work in simulated space.
