Nah, Largo made Mega Tokyo what it were and a reason I read it myself during adolescence.

Piro/Fred, after Largo took his exit, turned Mega Tokyo into a tragicomedy of sorts because he favoured a more narrative and structure story built around arcs and such, as his Chinese Cartoons. Instead of the 4koma style prior and that's what fucked up the comic afterwards.

Personally, I felt Piro should've abandon MT after Largo left and went on to produce a entirely wholly different comic, it's like he kept on taking a piss on Largo's metamorphical grave after his departure.

to this day one of the best webcomics with the most anti climatic ending ever. the author says he planned to end it there but at the same time so much plot was left unresolved and he was pretty depressed. pretty sure this was a sad case of sleeper hits rolling under the radar so he just ended it. his podcast sounded so sad really when he was talking about what to do now that he ended it

Right. I can understand what you're saying. In my eyes, it felt Piro tried to spin the story to his tune, so when it left behind the four panel format and what Largo help developed, it felt like a shift in tone and turned into Piro's power-fantasy.

Largo didn't leave MT, Fred-chan kicked him out.

Basically, Dark Horse came to Piro and said "we want to sign a book deal with you for MegaTokyo".

Piro went to Largo and said "I'm sick of doing MegaTokyo and want to do a comic called Warmth instead but I'll give you $2000 for your half of the comic and I'll keep doing it. So you can either accept nothing and what you created dies and I'll go on to another webcomic or you take the $2000 and at least then what you started will live on and you'll get $2000."

Faced with the choice of "nothing" or "$2000" Largo reason that $2000 was better than nothing and sold Fred-chan his half of the comic. Fred-chan already had the contract drawn up, had him sign it right there then rolled it up, popped it in a tube, turned around and walked away without saying a word.

This happened at a convention. He later announced he had a book deal which Largo didn't know about when he sold. Largo got very drunk at that con too and had many an unflattering thing to say about Fred-chan.

The real kicker was when Scott Kurtz congratulated Largo on the birth of his first child and said "At least this is one creation of yours that Piro won't be able to steal from you."

Fred-chan had a complete hissy fit on his rant page at that one saying that $2000 was a fair price because he could have just quit the comic altogether.

Largo and his wife did create their own webcomic. She did the art he did the writing. The webcomic he created on his own as well as what MegaTokyo became after he left proved that Largo and Fred-chan were a combination that were better than the sum of their parts and neither one on their own produced anything noteworthy.

He still draws, but he seems to be more into 3D modelling now. He made a 3D loli figure with a dick and now seems to spend his free time making cute outfits for it and giving them away on some 3D website.

Shit, this takes me back. Read these fuckers in the school library when I was a kid. I'm almost afraid to go re-read them and spoil the memory of them being hilarious.

The saddest thing about the Largo/Piro split was when people were asking Piro "how could you just stab a friend in the back like that not telling him you had a book deal lined up for the comic before strong arming him to sell you his half".

Piro basically said "He was never my friend, he was just a guy who had a domain name and knew how to run a website and I needed both those things to do my webcomic. I didn't like him. I only knew him from a chatroom we hung out on and he said he could help me start a webcomic so I let him."

Largo's response was "well I know you're not my friend now, but I had previously considered you a friend."

It was a real shame Largo got rolled the way he did.

Then Largo ran for state legislature under the Libertarian Party banner and the state of Texas also said they didn't consider him their friend.

Very heartbreaking, really.

Is anyone else annoyed by Hiveworks?

It seems okay from the perspective of an audience, especially since there are a fair amount of genuinely well-made comics on there. But, I draw my own as a pet project, and it makes me kind of uncomfortable when I think of it as advertising.

Is it the large quantity of tumblr art? Is it the fact that if you created something and had it put on Hiveworks for exposure, you'd be linking a bunch of shit you might not even like as an affiliate? Including Oh Joy Sex Toy and probably some other dumb shit? Is it because I see Whomp on there and the first thing I think is "He doesn't deserve this?"

The ones I remember are Elf Only Inn and Strange Candy. I read those like a decade ago. All I remember was the subplot about the guy playing the female character dating a girl playing a male character.
