Rogue One: the Halo Reach of Star Wars

INCOMING POST-ROGUE ONE POST

I knew Bail was referring to Leia when he was talking about his old, female friend but for a split second I thought just maybe it was Ahsoka.

>>88456589
Fuck you I almost pissed my pants with excitement while Vader took out those Rebel troops with his fucking lightsaber
>>
>>88456595
What does that even mean?
>>
what is the point of the B-wing?
>>
Ahsnoka
>>
>>88456635
It's cute.
>>
>>88456616
A New Hope opens with Leia stressing that they are on a diplomatic mission and the senate will be angry. Vader argues that they received a rebel transmission. However, if Leia and the Tantive IV are literally present AT the battle to the point that Vader actually sees the ship leave, the entire exchange/opening of ANH falls apart.

>>88456617
The vader bit was awesome.
>>
>>88456622
>both are prequels that feature a completely new cast that inevitably all die in an effort that lets the entire franchise begin and is also better than the franchise's second trilogy
>>
>>88456617
>Ahsoka
>In a live action movie
Is there even a possibility? I mean, there are ways to make an Ahsoka standalone without mentioning she was Anakin's apprentice and confusing the general audience.

>>
>>88456676
Nothing about that exchange implied Vader didn't already know. Leia was coming up with a quick excuse. She didn't know Vader saw.
>>
>>88456635
Frigate/Capital ship destruction.
>>
>>88456676
it's obviously Leia trying to bullshit her way out of a FUBAR situation, it's not like everyone on that ship doesn't already know they're fucked
>>
>>88456676
>A New Hope opens
Leia's lie isn't really believable either way and she's just making sure Vader knows she won't talk.

Hey guys guess what, I found Rogue One's Boba Fett/Sidon Ithano
>>
>>88456705
but it's so tiny, and why couldn't a Y-wing do the same job?
>>
Why is there a Star Wars general on /co/?
Is there enough actual discussion to warrant it, or do you guys just waifu post every thread?
>>
The last episode of 2003 Clone Wars takes place about 30 minutes before ROTS starts, how many minutes are between R1's end and ANH's beginning?
>>
>>88456683
Could literally be Asohka: A Star Wars story.

Begin with flashbacks/visions of her past an apprentice, show her leaving the Jedi Order, then fast-forward to her years as an early Fulcrum and voila.
>>
>>88456701
Seems kind of silly that she wouldn't know, since the rebel that passed it off literally barely escaped Vader.
>>
>>88456676
>Hey I see you doing rebel shit
>N-no, no rebel shit here, we're on a diplomatic mission...
>Bitch please, you know damn well you're doing some rebel shit in here

I don't see the problem
>>
>>88456730
There's a lot of comic and cartoon material to discuss.
>>
>>88456720
literally who

>>88456730
We have both a cartoon (just entered winter break) and nearly weekly comic releases. Both parts of what gives /co/ it's name.
>>
>>88456595
okay I wasn't the only one see that connection
>>
What the hell were Evazan and Ponda doing on Jedha and how did they get off of it so quickly? It was probably the only bit of fanservice in the movie that was gratuitous.
>>
>>88456753

One? Less?
>>
>>88454038
This one is really interesting for development on Dac. The Mon Cal just up and split. I wonder if the Quarren left too, but they probably sided with the Empire since they finally got exactly what they wanted; they get to be the Species Number One. Should set up some interesting events if they decide to return to Dac in triumph after Endor and find the Quarren put up No Vancacy signs.
>>
>>88456753
>The last episode of 2003 Clone Wars takes place about 30 minutes before ROTS
didn't happen
>>
>>88456755
I'd watch it
>>88456774
Moments like those really make the galaxy feel small and make no sense. That definitely should've been a deleted scene.
>>
>>88456762
Passing off a disk at the scene of a huge battle isn't the same as receiving a transmission. It changes the context of Vader taking over the Tantive.

Or it would if it was George Lucas writing it, I guess. Rogue One ultimately has zero effect on ANH due to the nature of how the movie was made. It's a niptick I guess, but I really didn't like it.
>>
>>88456720
Sidon and Boba at least actually have a small part to play in their plots

Your guy is more like the Constable Zuvio/Dice Ibegon
>>
Absolutely loved Rouge One, 100% makes up for TFA.
>>
>>88456797
tartakovsky cartoon is canon
>>
>>88456722
Y-Wings were getting old, B-Wing has more weapons and ordnance, and being debatably smaller makes for a reduced silhouette, which is great when you're going to face a ship's weapon batteries.

Also the Y-Wing's cockpit view is absolute horseshit for the pilot, whereas the B-Wing's cockpit allows for at least a 180 degrees forward view, which is great when you're dogfighting ships while your radar's being jammed like, say, during the Battle of Yavin.
>>
>>88456807
>isn't the same as receiving a transmission
did you miss the crucial fucking plot point as to how they got the damn disk?
>>
>>88456761
She wasn't there. She was on the bridge knowing that the Imperials and likely Vader were coming.
Also, ANH opens with rebels firing at storm troopers. If she was truly on a diplomacy mission, that wouldn't have happened.
>>
>>88456763
>>88456764
But everyone's talking about the movie.
Like, comics come out once a week, and if the cartoon is on break, what's the point?
Hell, you aren't even using /co/ pictures in the OP.
>>
>>88456826
Not currently, there's a few things that contradict TCW and the Ahsoka novel.
>>
>>88456826
No it isn't.

Plenty of canon things contradict it, including the 2008-2014 CGI cartoon
>>
>>88456764
>literally who
So yeah, Boba Fett and Sidon Ithano when they first appear.
>>
Apparently Chopper has a cameo on Yavin - anyone catch this or was I lied to?
>>
>>88456844
More than one comic comes out a week, and Rogue One is getting a lot of tie ins on Rebels.
>>
>>88456844
>we're only allowed to have generals on days the comics or cartoons actually come out

i've taken the bait
>>
>>88456844
>But everyone's talking about the movie
which the cartoon ties into. which has received much more discussion here than say, tg, who has talked much more about possible minifig releases for x-wing than co has
>>
>>88456774
>>88456799

It's the Force. They don't have to explain shit
>>
>>88456868
I thought I saw him inside the hanger, but it went by so quick I couldn't tell for sure.
>>
>>88456837
>did you miss the crucial fucking plot point as to how they got the damn disk?
No? I actually thought they were going to beam the data OUT with the scene of them downloading the disk because it'd fit perfectly with ANH... Then they did the physical pass off and makes Leia an actual participant in the battle.
>>
>>88456887
But why would they be on Jedha? It doesn't affect anything, so why would they be drawn there?
>>
>>88456826

>>
>>88456635
compared to the Y-wing, the B-wing destroy everything, it is omnivorous in its diet of destruction
the big downside is that it is slow, the Y-wing is faster, compared to the Y-wing, the B-wing serves better a screen to keep enemy ships away from your own ships, while Y-wings make better dedicated ship hunters
>>
>>88456908
Does anyone have a list of references/fan service?
chopper, hera, ghost, Bail to an extent, mustafar, coruscant, whills of the force
>>
>>88456944
Seems like she was too busy putting the New Republic together, doing politics, taking care of her family, and then setting up the Resistance afterward to really focus on Jedi training. But her sensitivity to the Force has gotten stronger with age.
>>
>>88456966
They'll probably send Kanan and Ezra off on a separate mission while this is occurring, or else Vader would sense them during the battle
>>88456985
Helicopter lightsabers were very brief, the season 2 finale is the best episode of the show.
>>
how does /co/ feel about the decision to kill Han Solo?
>>
>>88456985
Yes it got way better. And the irony of that Helicopter shit is that it was in the highest rated show of the entire run.

In fact, that episode is rated higher than every single TCW episode too, on IMDB. I wont say why, just know that not even the goofy helicopters could have ruined that amazing episode.

Seriously, you shouldn't have dropped it. Pick it back up.

It only gets better and better.

the Y-wing is a general purpose fighter-bomber, it can hold off enemy fighters long enough to bomb its targets, although some people like Dutch Vander apparently thought the Y-wing would make a great fighter and became aces in them

There was no label, Pablo confirmed it on twitter
I believe it's also in the Visual Dictionary
>>

>everything can be explained away pretty believably
There was an explanation, though (granted an off-screen one). But before that, I just thought it was a combination of the Force and propellant dynamics. It's hardly unbelievable and it works in the Inquisitors favor to establish just how unskilled and reliant on tools they are.

Sorry I didnt think about saving the link. I saw it awhile back so it can still happen (I know I want it too). I could even be miss remembering what was said in the link because it was awhile back when I last saw it. They mentioned in rebels that Vader and The Emperor are stationed out on Mustifar, I guess Vader likes to think about that time he got burnt to almost death.

It's probably better to be there than, per say, Emperor Palpetine Surgical Reconstruction Center.

If they are using him at all, what do you think they'll do?
Would Ewan McGreggor come back?

Same problem. Miss comunication with my friends means Im the only one who saw it today. They see it tomorrow. I really want to talk about all those ANH characters that showed up but cant because that surprise for me was too great that they deserve the same.

Tarkin was a god damn blessing I would never have expected and I smiled like a boy when Red and Gold leaders both showed up. (I would have been happy with name drops but they actually put the characters in the movie with speak roles? I was shocked)

Back in Star Wars Celebration this year, Filoni mentioned seeing a toddler/young child dressed as Krennic. He then mentioned that he knew stuff that we didn't yet, and that he wondered if people would have the same enthusiasm for him after they saw the movie.

Thrawns plan in the season itself is tactically sound. Let that one group be tracked back to other cells like Ryloth, Lothal, and Iron and Phoenix Squadrons and make contact with the inside man they'd logically need. the general explanation I think is that there is the standard Y-wing, which has a turret, and the BTL-A4, which deletes the gunner and locks the turret straight as a second set of guns
the first configuration is the EU one, a 2-seater fighter-bomber designed to survive long enough to use torps, while the second on is from the OT, a bona-fide heavy fighter that can stand head to head with most spacecraft

good thing that admiral was so brillaint, because they whoever arranged their fleet was not terribly smart

the admiral in charge of the imperial navy wasnt so smart either

Unlike TFA, the space battle in RO feels like a necessary element. I feel like you could plausibly have Starkiller's destruction as a consequence of the charges that were set and blown by Chewie and Han.

The battle in RO is it's own thing. We get the obvious connection between what's happening both on and above Scarif but at the same time you understand how the goals of both theaters are unique but mutually working towards the same objective. The back-and-forth elements also helped a good deal. With TFA it's immediately spelled out that the X-wings are useless until they aren't. Between the Rebel fleet somewhat suddenly showing up, realizing that destroying the shield is going to be tough, the hammerhead-on-ISD shield destroying action, and the Devastator showing up, RO gives us ups and downs.

James Earl Jones sounded really off. It's understandable since it's been so long and he's fucking 85, but still. At the beginning of the scene it was hype as fuck, but the longer it went on the more I could hear it.

Also... This is insanely nitpicky, but I swear the neck of the helmet isn't supposed to stick out like that, and honestly, he just looks too small for Vader. He had narrow shoulders and he looked shorter than Kreninc.

Also also, "Don't choke on your ambition"... It'd be cute from anyone but Vader.

It was probably the only scene that really pulled me out of the movie. I wonder if the final scene would be more effective if we just didn't have Vader at all in the halfway mark.

People now like to pretend Vader wasn't always cracking sarcastic quips in the OT. He always had a dark humor streak to him. The pun in Rogue One fits right in.

>The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am
>>
>>88459609
It was pretty transparent. There was no real reason for that interaction to happen other than to shove Vader in the movie.

It would have been fine if we only see Vader at the end, but that scene was awkward and took me out of the flow of the story. I'm just saying that in storytelling context, there was no reason for it.

It's there for nostalgia faggotry, nothing else. Yes, your Star Wars movie should please Star Wars fans, but at the cost of a coherent and non jumbled story?

They arnt really quips but the 3 lines of his that always stand out to me are his

whole "perhaps you feel you are being treated unfairly" conversation is kind of the same attitude.

But I think the two that fit better (though neither feel exactly the same) is

"Apology accepted Cpt Needa" followed by "the Emperor is not as forgiving as I am"

These lines all kind of show Vader has some sass
>>
>>88459647
>>Apology accepted Captain Needa :^)

That's really not a quip.

>>The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am

That's especially not a quip. That's a thinly veiled threat.
>>
>>88459620

His most famous line

>>88459663

The first one is definitely a quip. He just fucking killed the guy and is making a joke of it. The second one is also a joke. As its implying Darth Vader is at all forgiving. Its a threat AND a joke.

Vaders always been a snarky shit talker. Hes not a mopey grim robot.

>>
>tfw no "phoenix leader, standing by"

Ya I actually noticed that which I found to be very strange for the reason I stated. The initial impact probably destroyed their shields and heavily dmged the ship. The increased power would have seen the bridge crushed though. Its simply impossible for that ship to survive something like that.

Now maybe the director meant for them to survive, but it doesnt make sense in the context and nothing we see shows that they clearly survived the maneuver so its likely they died in the attempt.

No, there's actually proof of it.
You can even go look at TFA's trailer and film, and you'll see the difference.

There really was no reason to change something so small.
>>
Well, fuck. People really like Rogue One, like a lot. It's already got the same user score as TFA and will probably end up higher.

I'm hoping it's good too, but was hoping for a lesser reception, so that the whole 'no more Saga films now, just Spinoffs' thing they are considering was taken off the table. I quite like the whole Saga>Spinoff>Saga>Spinoff deal they have going already. But an ongoing story is better for the franchise, because just doing spinoffs is going to end up with it just feeling like a high budget FX show every year, rather than a narrative.
