Okay, /swco/, what's your honest opinion about the new diversity they've been pushing?
Personally, I like it a lot. They still are making movies about white guys - look at the Han Solo movie that's coming out - they're just expanding the representation of others in the universe.

Ya know one thing I did like about the Prequels, the new designs for ships and troopers and junk. It wasn't hyper derivative like every other EU ship design. The Original trilogy shows you 2 different Star Destroyers and the EU made a thousand of them. Each one is very clearly a Star Destroyer with extra bits hanging around. Like if you had a toy Star Destroyer and you wanted to make a new one by modifying the original. You can still clearly see what its based off of in the design and it mostly comes off as boring. But the Prequel designs from the bottom up are completely original. The Clonetrooper design is vaguely like the Stormtrooper design, but its original and unique. But in the EU every single new Stormtrooper has the same helmet, but with like spikes attached or something. Even the god damn droids have stormtrooper helmets. Why the breathing attachment for something that doesnt breathe, make something unique and different.

I can't think of a single Sci-Fi franchise that made as many original new designs in the same amount of time as the prequels. Thats one thing I really hope the new movies can keep doing, but probably wont.

I've come to realize later in life that doing completely original sci-fi art is hard as fuck and previously it was something that was pushed very hard by Lucas. Also, as far as we know, IG-88 and 4-LOM are literally whos. We don't know how they stand in the Bounty Hunting community. Don't let EU notions cloud your perceptions. Considering Boba is canonically a chump, it's a likelihood that the Bounty Hunters that were on the Executor's bridge were just the ones that happened to answer Vader's call and are not necessarily the best of the business. If Vader personally sought out the best, we'd probably see Cad Bane, Embo and Black Krrsantan and Highsinger instead of IG-88, 4-LOM, Zuckuss and Boba.

Pros:

Pulp stories aren't known for their layered characterisation, they're blunt by design.

I've seen a lot of reviews complaining about the characters in Rogue One and that seems odd, they work within the context of the kind of war team movies its taking inspiration from.

Just finished Catalyst.

That book was pretty damn great, I expected nothing less from Luceno.

The Tarkin scenes felt ripped straight out of his title book, and Krennic was increasingly manipulative throughout.

The ending was fairly somber and optimistic, but with a looming sense of dread knowing that Galen isn't going to get a happy-ever-after like it seems.

I'm off to see the movie now lads, I'm even more excited after finishing the book!

Two of them in a row for Star Wars, both angsty loners with the same color scheme, probably drove the point home pretty hard. It got especially obvious if your cinema does pre-show behind the scenes stuff because they bundled Star Wars and Moana interviews together at mine and you had both directors back to back go on about how their sassy female hero was unique because they were strong and independent but maybe had a soft side underneath it all with no hint of irony.

Most of them aren't situationally relevant. Vader doesn't deploy Deathtroopers, there are no shores for Shoretroopers, normal tanks weren't heavy enough for the Hoth assault, and the troop deployment on Endor needed a disguised shuttle and not a dedicated transport.

Real people tend to have accents, even if they're sometimes kind of subtle and they can go most of their lives without noticing. Sometimes Star Wars goes overboard like when Temuera Morrison was cast and Obsidian made every mandalorian in KOTOR 2 suddenly talk with a new Zealand accent even though you met a bunch of them in the first game and they sounded nothing like that. It was super easy to tell which one was Canderous under the mask because he was the only one that didn't have the accent.

The face is smaller, the eyes are colored differently and robes are arranged differently from ANH, and a bunch of little details like his chest panel and belt buckle are changed.

A part of why there are that many different planets in Star Wars is they feel an overwhelming need to justify every accent or different ethnic actor in the franchise. Token black X-Wing pilot from ROTJ can't be some guy, he had to be from an off world planet where he dealt with specism his whole life. Mace Windu can't be a random jedi taken as a kid, he has to come from a crazy ass jungle planet where everyone has a cool snowflake backstory too. If someone has a certain skin tone or verbal quirk they need a whole world that's just like that.

The irony is nobody gives a fuck about Aliens. Twi'leks come in 80 different colors and they're explicitly mostly just random ethnic groupings. Nemodians and Duros are related but it's not a big thing and nobody really cares. Even J.J. Fucking up Ithorians was mainly brushed off as "this guy is a different group in the species". That was even their go to answer for reusing a suit and swapping some parts on the Aqualish in ANH.

We're lucky nobody from the east coast cities had a major part. We'd probably have gotten Space Jersey or Space New York.

There are some indistinct blobs around the DS2 in a couple of shots. The script called for transports, so I assume stuff like the cargo shuttles sorta showed up in ROTJ.
We see Lambda shuttles in ROTJ and possibly another TIE boarding craft from the inside in ANH.

There were some cargo-carrying platforms in ANH and ROTJ (scanning crew cart and some matte painting on the DS2), but no need for an armed transport like the hover tank. Shoretroopers are only on shores. The TIE Striker is like an Imperial snowspeeder and there were no places to use them in the OT. The Imperial Juggernaut showed up in the Battle of Hoth in a novel, and since the battlefield stretched for kilometers, it could just be right offscreen.
