Yeah, it's part of the second wave of Dreamworks' Deal with Netflix.
After testing the waters for a year with a show based on their newest film at the time, they followed up with shows based on some of their bigger franchises that haven't had any movies in a while, Madagascar and Shrek/Puss in Boots.

I guess it depends.
It has a fairly episodic first season before picking up and going full story mode from season 2 onward.

Of course, even when it goes full story mode, it still takes some time off from the plot to focus on the lovable orphans every once in a while
