I was kinda into this until the first case is online campus harassment. Despite >>88425909 the solicit was a huge turn-off because it's an entrenching of the Hawkguy characterization for Clint, which I hate. I like Kooky Quartet Clint and T-Bolts Clint. But I like Kate, and I'm still hoping for some big exciting twist on the final page here that elevates it beyond a online campus harassment investigation, because that is not the most compelling first issue hook for me.

Comics like this, I don't know, I feel like a lot of the time they social issues/points they hit are there are reinforcement for a fanbase already fully aware of them - and therefore coming across as kind of performative - than any kind of genuine outreach. This comic feels like that when it talks about the harassment. But, I liked how Kate was shown in this mostly and it has a hook, so we keep going until we see if the hook's any good or not.

There's no difference between what she's doing and what Wade, Taskmaster, or any other gun/thug for hire does besides she's getting paid a whole lot less for smalltime marks. Except she's dishonest about the fact she's a paid thug, while tasky is at least honest with himself. There's no rule saying mercs can't take sympathy jobs, hell, there were several issues in his last volume where Deadpool and the Mercs for Money did jobs like scaring off abusive fathers/husbands and stopping landlords unlawfully evicting poor residents. It's common enough and character trait of his through his history that they even put it in the damn movie.

And yet rather than a tender moment showing the cash-motivated mercenary has a soft spot for the little guy, she just comes across as incompetent. Rather than stepping down from the big-leagues in an act of charity, she's starting off in the fucking gutter, and any time she tries to be taken seriously from now on she'll just seem like she's punching above her weight.

It's the difference between superman taking the time to talk someone down from a ledge, and Batman trying to fist fight Darkseid after brawling with street thugs.

The sticky note on the cover had something like "$225 for a license? Hell no." Despite the fact as a superhero and archer she's gotta spend untold thousands on her equipment, not to mention she probably spent more just flying out and a moving all her shit to the west coast.

She's got a sexy personalized firebird with custom decals, but can't afford a proper sign, she can buy/make trick arrows and top of the line archery equipment but can't buy the license to let her do the job she flew across a continent to do. She's doing gruntwork for college students and trying to be a PI but has no technical experience whatsoever.

It just seems like a poorly gelled way to make her appeal to the "average" millenial, worrying about rent and parking and paperwork and noticing abs 30 times an issue, despite the fact that people don't read (or buy) escapist comics to be reminded of their real life problems.

This run could've been her chance to at least attempt to branch out. Maybe she does try the PI thing but goes under a different name like Sparrow. She goes back to using the Hawkeye name only because she can't get any clients with a new name.

I'll give the book three issues but Kate really deserves better. A lot of writers seem to miss the point ofKate's character.
