everyone says Moana was a simple but "good" movie. Straightforward and with maybe minor faults it had no glaring plot issues, tone conflicts, characterization fiascos, or odd story tempo issues. Frozen comparatively was better in some categories (fucking music) but undeniably had a bunch of obvious mess to it as a movie. So Moana won't go down as a great film but won't ever really be called a bad film.

Frozen had a single mega-hit, a distant second but still good song (Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?), a couple other forgettable ones, and one song that was just bad (fucking rock monsters).

Moana can't compete with Frozen's #1 hit but all of its songs are better than everything else in Frozen.

It's the best of the three.

I really liked Moana a lot. It stands out in a lot of ways among the other Disney movies, but for some reason it just didn't really hit me like the other recent Disney Animation films did (not including Frozen, which I thought was mediocre)

For me it's Wreck it Ralph > Tangled >Zootopia > Moana > Frozen (haven't seen BH6)

Tangled was good but not a breath of fresh air. Frozen was the most marketing concise formula I've seen. Moana was in the same vein as frozen but execution was a million miles better: better story, better art, better aesthetic, better music, and better characters

Maybe not as much but it's kind of America's fault for helping to export the idea for decades that the only stories worth telling are about people with light skin who live in big houses.

That said, as someone living in Asia, the movie isn't really doing badly and everyone I know who watched it came away feeling positive about it. Hopefully it will keep inspiring Disney to make more stories like it.

I never even saw Frozen, but Tangled was UTTERLY forgettable and Moana was quite good.

The animation's gorgeous and the songs are catchy, but there's really not a lot going on character-wise compared to the other two.

Maui is the most interesting part by far, and he gets barely any attention when it comes time to address his arc. Then they just turn him into a deus ex machina during the climax.

At least the development for characters like Eugene and Anna was on-screen for the most part.

i thought the water animation and bright tropical aesthetic of the movie was a lot more enjoyable to watch then the snow animation and wintery backdrop of frozen. really appreciated no time was wasted on romance either

I liked Moana, never saw Frozen or Tangled and possibly never will

However, in the case of Moana, I quite enjoyed it but I also felt like it didn't feel like a complete epic adventure somehow, like the whole movie I kinda felt like I was waiting for things to get going and then before I knew it it just ended

Felt the same about Trolls, which was the last movie I watched prior, and I didn't feel this way about The Lego Movie or Wreck It Ralph which were the movies I watched prior to those
