http://www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/rogue-one-reviewed-is-it-time-to-abandon-the-star-wars-franchise

>There’s none of the Shakespearean space politics, enticingly florid dialogue, or experiential thrills of the best of George Lucas’s “Star Wars” entries (“Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith”). The script of “Rogue One” is so flat and inexpressive, the direction of the actors so methodical, as to render these artists nearly robotic and synthetic. The one character with any inner identity is, in fact, a robot, K-2SO, voiced by Alan Tudyk, and the only performance with any flair at all is a C.G.I. incarnation, or, rather, resurrection.

I don't think there are many people here old enough to remember when Empire Strikes Back came out, but I'll ask anyway for people who may be more knowledgeable on the subject than I am: is it true that it had kind of lukewarm "it was pretty good" reactions when it first came out? Why is Stuckmann comparing Vader's amount of screentime to Godzilla? Rogue One was never advertised as a Vader movie and Lucasfilm has said several times that Vader's presence is small and isn't the main villain.

>Vader's presence is small and isn't the main villain.

The problem with putting in someone like Vader is that everything else in the film becomes less attractive. Why the fuck would you care about the new Imperial bad guy when the trailer tells you VADER IS IN THIS FILM Y'ALL just wait until he shows up!

So when he does show up for 4 minutes, it will always feel like a disappointment, no matter what he does. Doesn't help that the new bad guy was apparently not all that interesting.

>Lobotomized and depersonalized, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the latest entry in the film franchise, is a pure and perfect product that makes last year’s flavor, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” feel like an exemplar of hands-on humanistic warmth and dramatic intimacy. Sure, J. J. Abrams’s movie offered merely effectively packaged simulacra of such values—but at least he tried.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/13/movies/star-wars-rogue-one-review.html?partner=IFTTT&_r=0
>Millions of people will sit through this thoroughly mediocre movie (directed with basic competence by Gareth Edwards from a surprisingly hackish script by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy) and convince themselves that it’s perfectly delightful. It’s so much easier to obey than to resist. The spoiler warning sent by the Disney empire instructed journalists to “continue to be our partners on this journey,” and defiance is unthinkable, even if “partner” is taken as a synonym for “shill.”

>"The Empire Strikes Back" is about as personal as a Christmas card from a bank. I assume that Lucas supervised the entire production and made the major decisions or, at least, approved of them. It looks like a movie that was directed at a distance. At this point the adventures of Luke, Leia and Han Solo appear to be a self-sustaining organism, beyond criticism except on a corporate level.

Eh, I have to admit I was more interested in RO than if TFA because RO has an original story. I do appreciate that. But I doubt the movie is good, probably just okay. Which is totally fine for an action film, thb.
>>
>>88399646
I'm a bit surprised about this as early interviews with Edwards had him saying that he wanted to leave his mark on the franchise and do something bold

I guess the reshoots really did cut his balls off, just like everyone said but /swg/ refused to believe
>>
>>88399681

I find that hard to believe, since RO has Whitacker and Mikkelsen, who at least are capable of giving good performances. TFA had no actors of that level.

It's edgy and pretentious as hell and seems like it hates Disney more than the film.

That's the NYT review

I'm talking about the New Yorker
>Lobotomized and depersonalized, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the latest entry in the film franchise, is a pure and perfect product that makes last year’s flavor, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” feel like an exemplar of hands-on humanistic warmth and dramatic intimacy. Sure, J. J. Abrams’s movie offered merely effectively packaged simulacra of such values—but at least he tried.

It's saying that the bad things we found about TFA (i.e. soulless cashgrab) is even worse in RO

Unless you’re thrilled by the idea of 133 minutes of sideways mentions, shout-outs and straight-up references to the original “Star Wars” (or “Episode IV: A New Hope,” for those born after 1977), there’s not nearly enough excitement going on here, much less character, plot or story.

Because one point doesn't make a trend

It takes two to really see how things are going
With TPM, it was "Well... This is a little awkward, but I can see how it can improve!"
But once AotC came around, everyone know it was Shitsville

Same thing with Disney Wars
TFA was cold and designed by committee. Functional but almost soulless
People saw that and explained it as restarting Star Wars on a new path

But now we can see that that's how Star Wars is going to be from now on.
Factory made and mass appealed.

http://eclipsemagazine.com/star-wars-the-force-awakens-borders-on-being-a-flawless-remake-michelles-review/

>Star Wars: The Force Awakens is probably a near perfect Star Wars film that regular fans and fanatics alike have been waiting for, but it suffers by slavishly sticking to the tropes from the original and doesn’t strive to go off script. After the disaster of the prequels, it seemed like the mandate here was “Don’t fuck it up by trying to deliver something new and fresh.” This isn’t a bad thing, but while watching it I kept thinking, why isn’t this THRILLING me? It’s very much a weirdly, self contained movie that only exists to slowly set things up for future movies. Again, not a bad thing.

Score: A-

>Just once I’d like to see a Star Wars film and be wowed by seeing something completely new and fresh. I know that’s impossible to do when a world and franchise is as established as this one is. I didn’t hate Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it commits the crime of being underwhelming and unoriginal.

>Drafted by experienced composer Michael Giacchino (Doctor Strange, Star Trek Beyond), the music uses famous passages from Williams’ sweeping Star Wars score. Here again, Rogue One overdoes it, cramming the grand orchestral score into every inch of the movie. The Zarathustra- and Valkyrie-sized racket swells up during the most innocuous, uneventful transitional sequences. A simple shot of a ship taking off becomes an occasion for over-the-top crescendos.

What the fuck does this even mean? A Star Wars movie isn't """"supposed"""" to be a blast. ROTS was NOT a blast considering its subject matter and that was appropriate. This movie is about getting plans to a planet destroying machine in what is likely a suicide mission.

Why the hell is literally EVERY review bashing the prequels?
>>
>>88401377
>it's just exhaustion

Nah. Maybe for some people, but I can tell when people actually care. Same with those who relentlessly bash them.

I have no horse in this race either way because I don't care about that particular discussion and don't get either extreme. I just watch it unfold.
>>
>>88401442
Because they were shit films.
>>
>>88401442
because they're the worst thing since the bagpipes
>>
>>88401442
Because you need to establish a scale.
And the bottom is a great place to start
>>
>>88401442
To normies and reviewers, the Prequels are the example of the worst Star Wars can be. So everything is talked about like it's on a scale of Prequels to OT.
>>
>>88401457
>>88401477
Sure, but why is it relevant? Are we doomed this to see this for reviews of every Star Wars-related movie from now on?
>>
>>88401402

These """""""""""""""""professional critics""""""""""""""""" just use the prequels as a scapegoat for their inability to come up with a proper review.
That's it.
It goes for just about everything these days, not just Star Wars related.
>>
>>88401492
for a while, yes
>>
>>88401348
That's not how canon works. Chopper appears in a scene on Rogue One so canonically he was literally on Yavin IV right before Episode IV. We don't have flimsy flamsy shit where we say 'Well you see this character has a twin brother who just happened to live to appear in the background of this comic so that's not actually the original character' like the EU anymore.
>>
>>88401496

The Prequels are viable and important movies even if you think they're not good, so the comparing things to them is fair game. The Holiday Special is basically just a joke to everyone. Making comparisons to it is useless because it stands alone in its cringe.
>>
>>88401585

But its worse, therefore it should be constantly brought up to establish a scale for reviewing Star Wars films

>>88401646
This is actually pretty spot on
>>
>>88401668
TFA is 1/7 of the saga
>>
>>88401671
But it's essentially an aside. It's why nobody seriously compares saga films to things like Rebels. They're not considered on the same scale to warrant comparison.
>>
>>88400645
Sure sounds like Michael Giacchino. Hopefully this is his first and last Star Wars movie.
>>
>>88401668
That is because TFA is a generic Hollywood Blockbuster with a copy-paste script, pretending to be Star Wars.
>>
>>88401691

This, the only "good" thing about the OT versus the prequels is that the plot isn't convoluted as fuck (despite being hackneyed as hell) and Han Solo. Otherwise it's the same garbage.

>awful protagonists
>terrible supporting characters and cringey comic relief
>hokey storytelling full of plot contrivances
>embarrassing villains with stupid names

If you think I'm wrong go and read the reviews for the OT. The only difference lies in which ones you grew up with. The constant infighting between the different generations of fans is fuckin hilarious.

A bunch of rebels in a ship are trying to get the plans to the Tantive IV. The ship starts failing (the lights go out) and you can hear Vader's breathing. W-why is Chopper on Yavin base, rather than with the Ghost crew?

Honestly, I'm really glad that I was totally unhyped for this movie, and didn't even bother to avoid spoilers. The fact it's supposedly fucking grim actually means I may really enjoy it. A 'rocks fall' /war film is all I ever wanted, and it sounds like it delivers, despite reshoots.

Even better, these few negative reviews have already plunged the 'professional' critical reception far enough below TFA that I can almost hear them backpedalling from their considerations of dropping trilogies/saga entries in favor of 'a story' every year and ending it with IX. We'll be seeing more of Kylo, Luke, Poe, Rey and Finn for the forseeable future. Fuck yes.

I never expected it to flop, that would be silly, but it's likely they will now stick to rotating between a numbered entry and lower-budget story as filler as their ongoing formula.

True. A good point.

>>88404840

Nah, I think we may be going to lose Kanan at some point, because yeah, after this season is done with I don't really see what they can do with him. Ezra is quickly becoming as competent Jedi as he was pre-blinding, and is already a good enough leader to be in charge of missions, and other than mentor all he is really involved with is the current plot with Bendu.

The others though? I reckon they are safe. Hera has practically been a supporting character since the start, given she only ever really pilots the ship, Sabine has the darksaber now and is the tie to the Mandolorians who are fan favorites, and Zeb and Chop are basically edgier Chewie and R2.

Rex is fucking doomed though.

But Katarn isn't canon.
>>
>>88404840
Kanan and Ezra, probably, yeah. We know Hera is alive, she's mentioned in Rogue One. Sabine and Zeb could either work for the Rebels or honestly easily go anywhere else. Rex may/may not be a soldier on Endor. Chopper is seen in RO.
>>
>>88405421
It ends with Leia receiving the plans of the Death Star and Darth Vader going after her

Cameos include Leia, R2, 3PO, Ponda Baba and Evazan (yes, really), and Chopper. There's also a reference to Obi-Wan.

Jyn bumps into them in Jedha. It's probably the only truly fanservicey/forced reference in the movie. You're either going to love it or hate it.

Chopper? Where is Sabine and the other guys
>>
>>88405593
Do they have the death sentence on eleven systems?
>>
>>88405617
They don't appear. As mentioned before, someone who might be Hera is mentioned as well, and the Ghost can be seen in the final battle. That's it.
>>
>>88405648
damn you filoni
>>
>>88405540
awesome. so is it like they both jump to hyperspace?

cool. outside of that quick shot from the TV spot, is the Ghost seen in the space battle?

any other interesting things to note?

Sorta, IIRC the Leia reveal ends the movie

Yes

All the main cast dies, and they are fine characters, nothing special, but better than TFA's main cast IMO. K-2SO and Chirrut were my favorites, and they both go out like champs. Vader is pretty much just a glorified cameo but he steals the show towards the end.

nice! I bet Rebels will do an episode featuring this from the ghost's POV

Wow. I was kind of expecting them all too but huh. Cool, they looked the most interesting in the lead up. That's cool.

/swco/ do you know where can I find an epub of Maul: Lockdown. I've heard it's worth reading and I've got time to spare. Doesn't seem to be on the Mega folder unless I'm retarded.

Not really, no. A lot of characters that were kind of hyped by pre-release material are just background fodder, like the aliens.

I'd like to offer some advice. I won't bother naming my credentials because it doesn't matter. Just take it if you want it.

You won't actually decide whether this is a good movie or bad movie after you watch it. You decide going in to the theater. You pre-suade yourself to like or dislike it in advance.

Tips:
1- Don't read reviews
2- Don't have extremely high hopes
3- Don't have any "do or die" criteria that must be satisfied
4- Be willing to overlook minor flaws in the first 30 minutes so you can move on and enjoy the rest of the movie
5- Go into the theater and promise yourself that you won't try to remember anything that happens just so you can write a review or complain on Twitter. So much of the outrage is people looking for flaws to they can sound important. It's virtue-signalling your patrician standards, and it will prime you to be unsatisfied.
>>

I loved her until I realized she probably suck Vizsla's dick and the whole time he was probably screaming OUR WARRIOR PAST DESCENDANTS OF THE TRUE WARRIOR HERITAGE the entire time

>>
>>88407328
Coruscant is not in the movie and there are no flashbacks, as per usual with Star Wars. Mustafar isn't in the movie either, the bacta tank scene takes place in a similar planet that may be Sullust or even a reimagined Vjunn since that bacta tank might be in Vader's castle but that's just me speculating.

Interesting, I was getting that from a comingsoon.net article where they said they saw the movie. flashback was a bad choice of words on my part but I meant one of the early scenes with Galen and krennic. It said that you could tell it was Coruscant because yoy could see the city skyline through the window
>>
>>88407648
Aahh, I totally didn't notice that. As the article says, it's very easy to miss. I'd have to watch the movie again to confirm that.

Metacritic is only useful for video game review gathering. Movies? Not so much.

At least Rotten Tomatoes don't cut out reviews like crazy. That being said, both are just a means of answering the question "is this movie/video game worth seeing'?

>>88399815
>82% on Rotten Tomatoes

Seems less than that of FF13 and FF15 in the critic category. Then again, it's not 'let's soft reboot A New Hope" the movie.
