Demon sorcerer Belasco kidnapped her to taint so that she would serve as a portal to his Dark Lords. She grew up in his dimension that exists outside of time and sometimes even space, learnt magic and defeated Belasco.

Her whole point was that she isn't absolutely good, nor absolutely evil. She tried becoming pure as Alternate Timeline Storm who served Belasco and found redemption, but could never reach it. At this point It doesnt bother me that much if she goes main stream if the movie does come out. And I dont mind either that she´ll probably be nerfed like in her initial Claremont runs like not controlling her teleport powers well and only using her magic spells in dire situations mostly.
But I do fear (and FOX loves to do this) they change her completely like other characters in their movies over the years like X3 Psyloke and Juggernaut.

Sometimes I wonder why do people still want FOX to maintain movie rights to the X-Men franchise. You do make a good point here. They have the liberty to do what ever they want and butcher those characters only if it fits the script or whatever retarded reason.

At the close of her New Mutant days, Illyana had her soulsword which was just spiffy with dispelling magics it touched and stunning magicians and magical creatures on a hit. Her summoned armor was proof against competent magical assaults and had some physical protection too, enough to bounce bullets.
She could Astral Project, sense magic, and not a lot else while she was any place other than Limbo.
In Limbo, she was about a step or two behind Doc Doom in ability with magic, and several tiers below Doc Strange.

Time passed, shit happened, and she improved her magical ability by having a much closer tie with Limbo spiritually, on top of getting months of lessons from Doc Strange during his prime (time travel happening here via stepping discs).

At the moment she's about where she used to be in magical power with her "I'm in Limbo" realm .... while on Earth. When she's actually in Limbo, she's an unfettered powerhouse.

now, our good old evil sorcerer from the timeless dimension realized he cannot live without his russian demon waifu so he recreates her out of magic. demon waifu is obviously pissed so she usurps his throne and rummaging the world for what remains of her soul, concealed in the evil sorcerer's amulet

she returns like nothing happened, everyone flips the fuck out and bullies a bunch of new kids into helping her kill the sorcerer

she gets what's left of her soul back by tricking everyone into releasing the god-mutant legion who proceeds to kill the chaos gods that where released from completing the soul amulet

then she starts dressing in edgycool leather and wielding a final fantasy sword
