Hope is a mistake.

I don't feel all that hot on LucyxPaulo because a) Paulo and Rachel are super cute together and b) Paulo's "good end" daydream literally starts with "take advantage of this emotionally devastated girl".

Also, Paulo's desire for Lucy has always felt like it's got overtones of Paulo wanting to get one over on Mike, which all sorts of weird and unhealthy.

Augustus is the only one who really got what was going on with Lucy and her mental and social problems.

She feels a bit alienated from her friends because of that and seeing him is a relief. He was there for her in a way the other characters weren't, because she didn't feel comfortable talking to them after a point.

The comic made Lucy's feelings on the Paulo matter apparent already, just not in a single panel like that.

Lucy was always vocal to Daisy's face about how you should get over your crush before jumping into a relationship with someone else. So it would make sense for her to apply that logic to herself.

As for Lucy actually caring about Paulo, it showed her caring a lot after he refused to take advantage of her when she was emotionally unstable. She started following him around a lot more, hanging around outside of detention for him etc.. Hell, even after he pretty much fucked that up by sleeping with Rachel and Jess and then getting together with Jasmine, Lucy still respected his boundaries despite being pissed off at him for leading her on.

As much as it sucks to have exclusive content only in books, as opposed to available online, I do appreciate the "Show, don't tell" approach.

I'm still really amazed at what sort of grasp Vero has over her characters. Melodrama aside, she understands them very well and their issues.

Lucy is the biggest example, clearly. Her first real issue is how she's afraid of people liking her solely for her looks. Along with him saving her life that was part of why she liked Mike in the first place - he was a friend first and foremost. But then around the time Sandy showed up she felt jealous because her friend and crush was being taken away. And then Sandy went away, which helped, but Mike didn't get over her, and he started seeing parts of Sandy in her, and she really didn't like that.

So she started being both possessive and distant, and that's where the problems started. Because Mike was being so... Mike, she started developing this complex over not getting into a relationship with someone if you already have a crush with someone. She didn't like Mike being unconsciously conflicted over her and Sandy, and it showed. Hell, that kind of also applies to Daisy, who never really got over Mike yet still got together with Abbey. And now we've seen where that ended up.

Augustus is probably a good fit with Lucy because Vero has already said they're not really interested in one another, and there's some mutual respect there. If anything were to grow from that, it would have friendship at its base, which is great.
